.' //7 Mt. Hope Methodist Church, Hacock Couty, Georgia, was fouded i the year 1846. Accordig to the historia G. G. - /)' Smith i his "Life ad Times of Bishop George F. Pierce", Rev. Geo. F. Pierce was at that time servig his secod term of. office as Presidig Elder of the Augusta District, ad sice there was o Parsoage for the District, he decided to purchase a home ear Sparta where he had may frieds. Some years before, whe servig the same office, he lived i the Sparta Parsoage ad boarded the pastor who had o family~ This time, however, he purchased a tract of lad havig a three room house thereo, from Hardy Culver about four miles east of Sparta i the-year 1845 which he cosidered home for the greater part of the rest of his life. No doubt, therefore, this great ma had much-to do with the foudig of Mt. Hope Church. James Joes was the first Pastor ad served for a term of three years. Whe the Coferece met i 1847, Josiah Lewis was made Presidig Elder of the Augusta District ad served for 8 term of four years. We shall see as we follow the record that-this good ma, a ative of Hacock Couty, cotributed may years of service, both as Presidig Elder ad as Pastor, to his ative commuity. Accordig to the record of deeds i the office-of Clerk of Court of Hacock Couty, the property for Mt. Hope Church, cotaiig three acres ad twety eight poles of lad, was "Sold ad coveyed, for the sum of five dollars, by 'Wilso Bird to Peter Scott, Lovett Sauders, Bejami T. Harris, Thomas DUdley ad William Fraley, trustees i trust for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the tract beig ear Peter Scott ad Lovett Sauders." The paragraph which follows" the descriptio is quite legthy, settig forth i miute detail this trusteeship for the said Methodist Episcopal Church South. Oe, readig the paragraph is remided icidetally that a divisio i the Methodist Church had accurred-just two years previously, 1844. The first Geeral Coferece of the Methodist Episcopal Church South was held i Petersburg,Va., May, 1846. The first buildig o the lot purchased as idicated above was ev~detly of hew logs ad was situated some distace back of the preset buildig. There are some livig i the commuity today, icludig "'Ucle Bill Johso" as he is familliarly kow, who remember the buildig as the official school house of the Mt. Rope commuity. It is ot defiitely kow just whe the preset buildig was erected but it-was evidetly durig the early history of the church. Daiel Garrett, a local Methodist-Preacher ad gradfather to W. L. Garrett, oe of our preset members, helped to hew the logs ad costruct this first buildig. I later years aother structure, likewise built of hew logs, occupied a lot just orth of the preset Church buildig ad was used as a public school for may years. Mrs. T.B~Bratley, Nee Addie Garrett, ow 79 years of age, taughthere as did Mrs. Harvie Archer, kow ad loved as Miss Bessie.
IJ~ All the old records of the church have bee lost alog with the passig years ad of course-it is impossible to give the ames of ay of the members other tha those metioed i the titles to the property; But for the most part they are the gradparets of the preset-day members of the church. Mt. Hope Church has always bee i the Augusta-District except the years 1858-1865, i which it-was i the Maco District. The records show that it has bee o the Hacock Missio. Hamcook Circuit. Culverto 61rcuit. ad Sparta Charge. FOllowig is a list of the Appoitmets from the first record of 1846 to the preset time. - - Coferece of 1846: Augusta District; Geo.F.
