The national anthem of Hell is I did it my way. Associated Authors "If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for." Charles Spurgeon Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance First Love Ministries, Inc. of Perry, Georgia USA Prayer Study 553 M HELL No course on spiritual warfare could be complete without some teaching on Hell. In our modern society many refuse to believe that a loving God could send anyone to Hell, and they are absolutely right. A loving God does not send people to Hell. They go because of their own choices and for their pride (unrepentant sinners feel they are good on their own and need no payment for their sins) in refusing to accept the only sacrifice, which is freely given to anyone who believes in Christ Jesus, i.e. salvation through the baptism into the blood bought BODY OF CHRIST, by the Holy Spirit. Many of the present day cults, such as the Jehovah Witnesses, do not believe there is a hell. Their belief is that the wicked are annihilated, along with satan, and thus cease to exist. The problem with ANNILATION is that such

winds of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14: that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting), made up by men, do not line up with scripture. Isaiah 66:24: And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die and their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh. The editors of the New King James Bible comment on this verse in Isaiah: Those who have refused to avail themselves of God s provision in Christ, who have insisted on their own ways and transgressed God s ways, will face eternal judgment. When separating the sheep from the goats, the Lord says to the goat nations at His left hand: Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels Matthew 25:41, and Matthew 25:46: And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. See also Ezekiel 18:4; Malachi 4:1; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 14:9-11, 19:2-3, 20:10-15. Moreover, there will be no second chance as illustrated by the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. An equally unscriptural doctrine of demons is UNIVERSALISM, an ancient heresy, which has become very popular in our day and basically says that we can believe whatever we want to believe, and God, whose nature is love, will ultimately bring all of mankind to salvation. Universalists, according to Dr. Hobart Freeman, reject the historical teachings of God s Word as held by Christians concerning man s depravity, eternal punishment,

the miraculous, the triune nature of God, and the infallibility of the Scriptures, while affirming the ultimate salvation of all men. This doctrine is promoted by Unitarian and Universalist churches. We are warned in God s Word against cults like these (2 nd Peter 2:1: But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them and bring on themselves swift destruction.). Universalists take scripture out of context and refuse to look at scripture that refutes their doctrine. Interestingly, universal salvation of all men is a central doctrine of Mormonism, which is no surprise since they believe that all men are sons of God who preexisted as sons of God before their birth in a human body. Confusingly, women, however, cannot be saved unless married to a man, and Joseph Smith himself assigned the non-mormon clergy and non-mormon churches, the so called apostate churches in Mormon tradition, to Hell. Dr. Freeman says that, in spite of what Universalists teach, there is an abundance of scripture that teaches the eternal punishment of the lost. He says, Jesus Himself taught that Hell was a place of eternal punishment where the fire shall never be quenched: Where the worm dieth not (Mark 9:43-48), and that the Lake of Fire where the lost, including the Devil and his hosts, will be cast is a place of eternal torment (Revelation 14:9-11; 20:10-15; 21:8). Contrary to the error that such punishment in Hell is remedial, and that the lost will see their error and repent, the Scriptures not only declare that their punishment is eternal, but also state that a sinner does not change his

character in Hell (Revelation 22:11), that He is forever forbidden access to the eternal City of God (Revelation 22:14-15), and that there is a great gulf fixed (between the save and the lost), so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence (Luke 16:19-31). In other words, there is no going back and forth either way. Part of the confusion over Hell, I think, is the various names used in the Word for Hell. The Greek word in the New Testament, that is translated as Hell in English, is Gehenna. The name is derived from Hinnom, or the Valley of the Sons of Hinnom, which is a valley near Jerusalem where children were sacrificed and burned alive. Gehenna or the English version Hell, came to mean the place of punishment for sinners and a place of unquenchable fire. Mark 9:43-44 reads: If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched-where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. (By the way, this scripture about cutting off the hand is not to be taken literally but is no doubt a Hebrew figure of speech, an idiomatic expression [(like She stabbed me in the back is in English) and hyperbole or exaggeration [(like I m so hungry I could eat a horse )]. Unfortunately, no one can overcome sin by just dismembering his body.) Other Biblical names for Hell are Hades, Tartarus, and Sheol. The most prominent of these other names for Hell are Hades, which is Greek, and Sheol, which is Hebrew. Tartarus is the lowest abyss of Hades, where the rebellious angels are said to have been cast down from heaven into.

(2 nd Peter 2:4 refers to this and in the original Greek the term Tartarus was used, although now the newer translations used the term Hell: For if GOD did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment ) Other expressions that denote Hell in the scriptures are the Abyss, outer darkness, flame, furnace of fire, unquenchable fire, fire and brimstone (Matthew 8:12, 13:42, 22:13, 25:20 & 41: Mark 9:43 48; Jude 13, Revelation 20:14 Dr. Paula Price in The Prophet s Dictionary writes, The Bible teaches that hell is deep, has levels, and is vulnerable to its Creator GOD. Hell is accessed only through death, where only the soul can enter. It has a guardian and angels who transport doomed souls there. Hell s neighbor is Abaddon, the wandering destroyer who spends his time deceiving and seducing people into deserving it. Christ says it is fiery, the place of the doomed, the curse of God which the Creator prepared as a place for the devil and his angels. (Matthew 25:41: Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Some scholars, with some justification, see Hell as a mere holding cell before the residents are cast out into the lake of fire. The ultimate place for satan, the beast, and the false prophet will be the lake of fire. Revelation 19:20: THEN the beast was captured and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. Revelation 20:10: The

devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Before being cast into the lake of fire, satan is bound for 1000 years in the bottomless pit. He is released for a short time but continues to lead the nations he deceives into rebellion, until he is cast into the lake of fire as in Revelation 20:10 above. Revelation 20:15 also tells us that those who have not accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior will be cast into this same lake of fire: And anyone not found written in the BOOK of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Even Death and Hell will also be cast into the lake of fire: Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death (Revelation 20:14). Finis Dake sees 5 distinct prisons in the underword of departed spirit: 1. TARTARUS: This is a special prison for fallen angels who sinned before the flood. No human beings or demons ever go to this prison (1 st Peter 3:19, 2 nd Peter 2:4, and Jude 6-7). 2. PARADISE or ABRHAM S BOSOM: This was the place the righteous went after physical death. They were in Abraham s Bosom (Luke 16:22) and lived comfortable lives, even though they were held captive by the devil against their will. This is where Christ went after his death on the cross where he conquered death, hell, and the grave. This prison no longer has any prisoners because Christ captured these captives in hell and set them free in heaven with Him when He ascended into heaven. Now the righteous dead go directly to heaven at death, where

Paul writes that they are absent from the body but present with the Lord (2 nd Corinthians 5:8). (Luke 23:43, Luke 16:19-31) 3. HELL: Dake says this is the place of torment in sheol-hades, where wicked souls go and have always gone and will always be until the end of the Millenium, where they will be reunited with their resurrected immortal bodies and will be cast into the lake of fire for eternity (Revelation 20:11-15). 4. THE ABYSS OR BOTTOMLESS PIT: This is the place where demons and some angelic beings are sent. The Old Testament refers to this place as Abaddon (Luke 8:26-31; Romans 10:7; Revelation 9:1-3, 9:11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1-10). 5. THE LAKE OF FIRE: This is the eternal and final hell for all fallen angels, demons, and wicked men. It is the same Gehenna of Luke 12:5 and the final hell prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). Again I emphasize that it is eternal in duration (Isaiah 66:22-24; Matthew 25:46; Revelation 14:9-14; 19:20; 20:10-15). Some Other Facts about Hell (taken from Yahoo Questions on World Wide Web) Hell is a Burning Lake of Fire "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Rev 20:15) "Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye

offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire." (Matthew 18:8,9) Hell is like a Bottomless Pit The below verse does not directly apply to the lake of fire. However, Hell will be at least this bad and even worse! And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand." (Rev 21:1) Hell is a Horrible Tempist - A Place for the Wicked "Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: [this shall be] the portion of their cup." (Psalms 11:6) Hell is a Devouring Fire "The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?" (Matthew 8:12) "And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:42) "Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 22:13) "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 25:30) "And shall cut him asunder, and appoint [him] his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 24:51) Hell is a Place of Eternal Torments "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom." (Luke 16:23) "And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name." (Revelation 14:11) "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet

[are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." (Revelation 20:10) Hell is a Furnace of Fire "And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 13:42) "If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast [them] into the fire, and they are burned." (John 15:6) Hell is a Place of Destruction "Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;" (2 Thessalonians 1:9) Hell is a Place Where They will Curse God "And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds." (Revelation 16:11) Hell is a Place Where People Pray so Their Relatives Will not Come There but it does no Good "Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment." (Luke 16:27,28)

Hell is a Place Where They Cry for Mercy - or a Drop of Water to Ease the Pain of the Fire "And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." (Luke 16:24) Hell is a Place of Everlasting Punishment "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." (Matthew 25:46) Hell is a Place of Everlasting Fire "Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire." (Matthew 18:8) "And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:" (Mark 9:43) Hell is a Place of Eternal Separation from God "Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;" (2 Thessalonians 1:9) Hell is a Place of Unquenchable Eternal Fire "Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn

up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (Matthew 3:12) 228 Hell is a Place for those who Perish "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not PERISH, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Hell is a Place of Blackness and Darkness Forever "Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever." (Jude 1:13) Hell is a Place Prepared for the Devil and his Angels --- But Men Still go There by Choice! "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:" (Matthew 25:41) Hell is a Place Where they will be Tormented with Brimstone and Fire "The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:" (Revelation 14:10) Hell is a Place where they will Drink the Wine of God's Wrath "The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and

brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:" (Revelation 14:10) Hell is a place for the Wicked who will be Judged "Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men." (Psalms 139:19) "The wicked shall see [it], and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish." (Psalms 112:10) "When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; [it is] that they shall be destroyed for ever:" (Psalms 92:7) "But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee." (Psalms 55:23) "For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb." (Psalms 37:2) "For yet a little while, and the wicked [shall] not [be]: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it [shall] not [be]." (Psalms 37:10) "And I will punish the world for [their] evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible." (Isaiah 13:11)

Hell is a place for those who have Rejected the Lord Jesus and His Word done on the Cross "Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?" (Hebrews 10:29) "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];" (Hebrews 2:3) Hell is the Second Death - 1st Death is Physical - 2nd Death is Spiritual Separation from God in Hell Forever "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8) Hell is a Place to Fear Going to "But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." (Luke 12:5)

The International Bible Dictionary says this of hell: The misery of hell will consist in the privation of the vision and love of God, exclusion from every source of happiness, perpetual sin, remorse of conscience, perpetual sin, remorse of conscience in view of the past, malevolent passions, the sense of the just anger of God, and all other sufferings of body and soul which in the nature of things are the natural results of sin, or which the law of God requires as penal inflictions. The degrees of anguish will be proportional to the degrees of guilt (Matthew 10:15, 23:14; Luke 12:47-48), and these punishments will be eternal, like the happiness of heaven.
