Greeting and Announcements Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota The Second Sunday in Lent March 17, 2019 Hymn of Invocation: Preach You the Word LSB 586 1 Preach you the Word and plant it home To men who like or like it not, The Word that shall endure and stand When flow rs and men shall be forgot. 2 We know how hard, O Lord, the task Your servant bade us undertake: To preach Your Word and never ask What prideful profit it may make. 3 The sower sows; his reckless love Scatters abroad the goodly seed, Intent alone that all may have The wholesome loaves that all men need. 4 Though some be snatched and some be scorched And some be choked and matted flat, The sower sows; his heart cries out, Oh, what of that, and what of that? 5 Of all his scattered plenteousness One-fourth waves ripe on hill and flat, And bears a harvest hundredfold: Ah, what of that, Lord, what of that! 6 Preach you the Word and plant it home And never faint; the Harvest Lord Who gave the sower seed to sow Will watch and tend His planted Word. Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Exhortation P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confession of Sins P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Forgiveness of our Sin (Absolution) P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Lord, Have Mercy! (Kyrie) 2

During the season of Lent, the Hymn of Praise is omitted. 3

Greeting and Prayer of the Day (Salutation and Collect) P Let us pray. O God, You see that of ourselves we have no strength. By Your mighty power defend us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 26:8 15 When Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, You shall die! Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant? And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD. When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD. Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears. Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you. Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 4

Reading from a New Testament Letter (Epistle): Philippians 3:17 4:1 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel: John 6:25 35 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal. Then they said to him, What must we do, to be doing the works of God? Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent. So they said to him, Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus then said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. 5

Hymn of the Day: Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendor LSB 534 1 Lord, enthroned in heav nly splendor, First-begotten from the dead, You alone, our strong defender, Lifting up Your people s head. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Jesus, true and living bread! Jesus, true and living bread! 2 Though the lowliest form now veil You As of old in Bethlehem, Here as there Your angels hail You, Branch and flow r of Jesse s stem. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! We in worship join with them; We in worship join with them. 3 Paschal Lamb, Your off ring, finished Once for all when You were slain, In its fullness undiminished Shall forevermore remain, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Cleansing souls from ev ry stain; Cleansing souls from ev ry stain. 4 Life-imparting heav nly manna, Stricken rock with streaming side, Heav n and earth with loud hosanna Worship You, the Lamb who died, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Ris n, ascended, glorified! Ris n, ascended, glorified! Text: Public domain Sermon: "With" John 6:25-35 Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. 6

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Church Offering Offering Song (Offertory) 7

Preface Proper Preface P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: 8

Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: 9

Lord s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Peace (Pax Domini) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) Distribution Hymns: I m But a Stranger Here LSB 748 1 I m but a stranger here, Heav n is my home; Earth is a desert drear, Heav n is my home. Danger and sorrow stand Round me on ev ry hand; Heav n is my fatherland, Heav n is my home. 10

2 What though the tempest rage, Heav n is my home; Short is my pilgrimage, Heav n is my home; And time s wild wintry blast Soon shall be overpast; I shall reach home at last, Heav n is my home. 3 Therefore I murmur not, Heav n is my home; Whate er my earthly lot, Heav n is my home; And I shall surely stand There at my Lord s right hand; Heav n is my fatherland, Heav n is my home. Text: Public domain Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart LSB 708 1 Lord, Thee I love with all my heart; I pray Thee, ne er from me depart, With tender mercy cheer me. Earth has no pleasure I would share. Yea, heav n itself were void and bare If Thou, Lord, wert not near me. And should my heart for sorrow break, My trust in Thee can nothing shake. Thou art the portion I have sought; Thy precious blood my soul has bought. Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord, Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word. 2 Yea, Lord, twas Thy rich bounty gave My body, soul, and all I have In this poor life of labor. Lord, grant that I in ev ry place May glorify Thy lavish grace And help and serve my neighbor. Let no false doctrine me beguile; Let Satan not my soul defile. Give strength and patience unto me To bear my cross and follow Thee. 11

Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord, In death Thy comfort still afford. 3 Lord, let at last Thine angels come, To Abr ham s bosom bear me home, That I may die unfearing; And in its narrow chamber keep My body safe in peaceful sleep Until Thy reappearing. And then from death awaken me, That these mine eyes with joy may see, O Son of God, Thy glorious face, My Savior and my fount of grace. Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend, And I will praise Thee without end. Text: Public domain O Little Flock, Fear Not the Foe LSB 666 1 O little flock, fear not the foe Who madly seeks your overthrow; Dread not his rage and pow r. And though your courage sometimes faints, His seeming triumph o er God s saints Lasts but a little hour. 2 Be of good cheer; your cause belongs To Him who can avenge your wrongs; Leave it to Him, our Lord. Though hidden yet from mortal eyes, His Gideon shall for you arise, Uphold you and His Word. 3 As true as God s own Word is true, Not earth nor hell s satanic crew Against us shall prevail. Their might? A joke, a mere facade! God is with us and we with God Our vict ry cannot fail. 4 Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer; Great Captain, now Thine arm make bare, Fight for us once again! So shall Thy saints and martyrs raise A mighty chorus to Thy praise Forevermore. Amen. Text: Public domain 12

Post-Communion Prayer (Collect) A Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Closing Hymn: Jerusalem, My Happy Home LSB 673 1 Jerusalem, my happy home, When shall I come to thee? When shall my sorrows have an end? Thy joys when shall I see? 2 O happy harbor of the saints, O sweet and pleasant soil! In thee no sorrow may be found, No grief, no care, no toil. 3 Thy gardens and thy gallant walks Continually are green; There grow such sweet and pleasant flow rs As nowhere else are seen. 4 There trees forevermore bear fruit And evermore do spring; There evermore the angels dwell And evermore do sing. 13

5 Apostles, martyrs, prophets, there Around my Savior stand; And soon my friends in Christ below Will join the glorious band. 6 O Christ, do Thou my soul prepare For that bright home of love That I may see Thee and adore With all Thy saints above.
