UNISON READING OF THE BINKLEY COVENANT Professing our faith in Jesus Christ, we covenant with God and one another to live together as members of this church in obedience to God's will as it has been and shall be made known to us. As part of the body of Christ throughout the world, we promise to express our faithfulness to Christ in love for one another and for the whole of God's creation. The Spirit of God assisting us, we further promise to attend the services of this congregation, observe its sacraments, support its mission to all people, practice faithful stewardship of our possessions and be conscientious caretakers of the Earth, endeavoring always to be a fruitful body of Christians. GIVING OUR GIFTS OFFERTORY How Can I Keep From Singing arr. Greg Gilpin My life flows on in endless song, how can I keep from singing? No storm can shake my inmost calm, how can I keep from singing? What, though the tempest around me roars, I know the truth that liveth. What though the darkness around me close, songs in the night it giveth. I hear the real, though far off hymn, that hails a new creation. It sounds an echo in my soul, above earth s lamentation. To the Rock I m clinging. How can I keep from singing? WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given in honor of the birthday of Lori Barbier. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by the Youth Choir; the Chancel Choir; Kennedy Crawford, mezzo-soprano; Mike Davis, piano; and Courtney Hedgecock, cello. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Tay Nay Sar. * The Congregation standing as each is able. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.

If you are a guest, please know that you are not obligated to participate in this practice. SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: Binkley Youth and the Outreach Committee invite you to wager on the Super Bowl in a very helpful manner. Two large soup pots will be located in the Narthex this morning. One pot will be decorated in support of the New England Patriots. The other will offer colorful support for the Philadelphia Eagles. You will be encouraged to place contributions of cash, check or coin in either pot to cheer on the team you hope will win. The good news is that every penny raised will help our local Inter-Faith Council food pantry. For the past 17 out of 19 years, the pot with the most money in it has predicted the Super Bowl winner. Who knows what 2018 will bring? GO PATRIOTS?!, GO EAGLES?!, NO, WAIT, GO IFC FOOD PANTRY! THE REAL WINNER. WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES: Feb. 7, 5:30 pm, Lounge: The Pleasure of the Story with Anne Winfield: On any ordinary day, Anne is delightful to listen to but when she tells a story, you enter another dimension of time and space, with characters you begin to know as friends, and are left with an insight or two into what it means to be human. Laughter is always an ingredient. Come and be charmed by a story offered by Anne. HKONJ/MORAL MARCH ON RALEIGH, Feb. 10: Join other Binkley members and friends on Saturday, February 10, for the 11th annual HKonJ People s Assembly and Moral March on Raleigh. The emphasis this year is on the ballot box: Taking the Resistance to the Ballot Box. Those interested in carpooling can meet at the church just outside the narthex at 8:15 am. Pre-rally is at 9:00, followed by the march and rally at 10:00. Email Velma Ferrell at velmamferrell@gmail.com for questions and to let us know of your interest. BARBEE S AT BINKLEY: Combined Worship & Luncheon, Feb. 18: Bishop Gene Hatley and his congregation from Barbee s Chapel will come to visit on February 18. We will have a covered dish lunch for them following the worship service. Please bring your favorite casserole, salad, fried chicken, dessert, or anything you d like to share. This is always a great time to renew friendships with our friends from Barbee s. SAVE THE DATE: Lunch with Syrian Friends, Feb. 25, 12:15 pm, Fellowship Hall (donation received). WOMEN'S RETREAT: Mar. 9-11, Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC: Join us this year as we consider the theme, "Inhabiting a Woman's Soul," with help from two medieval women mystics, Mechthild and Teresa. Just a short walk from the ocean, you'll have time to meander, relax, listen, make art, pray, and worship -- and also play and laugh -- with friends new and old. Registration forms are available outside Stephanie Ford's store and through a link found in the newsletter or Friday Update. Please note that registration is first come, first served. Deadline:February 28. A YARD SALE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHURCH COUNCIL: After discussion of pros and cons, the Church Council reluctantly voted at its January meeting to postpone the Binkley-Barbee yard sale until 2019. Barbee's Chapel is in agreement. With Binkley's 60th Anniversary celebration, the Fall Festival, and likely Seymour Symposium all scheduled shortly after the usual time of the yard sale, this seemed to be asking too much from our volunteers. A further advantage to the postponement is that it puts the biennial Yard Sale and biennial Fall Festival in alternating years going forward. We hope this doesn't create too much of a problem for all the treasures you'd been planning on donating this year. Oh, for a Binkley warehouse! Sonnie VanSant, Moderator
