Easter Sunrise - Matins First Importance April 20, 2014 Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Ruth Marschel, Organist Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Most of us are willing to get up early in the morning for something really important to us vacation travel, a fishing trip, or an out-of-town sports event. This morning we are up early for what is of first importance to us and to the whole world. We are awake at this early hour to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Not only is the eternal power of death destroyed; the eternal power of isolation from God and from those we love is broken as well. Paul handed on to us what is of first importance: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve (1 Corinthians 15:3 5). He appears among us today through His Word. Christ is risen! Alleluia! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Gracious and mighty God, You cast away the veil of death that overshadows all people by the brightness of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Dawn on our hearts and in our lives this day and every day, that we

may shine forth the joy and wonder of the resurrection in all that we say and do; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. HYMN Jesus Christ is Risen Today LW 127 Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia! Praise him, all you heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! All: O Lord, open Thou my lips. And my mouth shall show forth Thy praise Makes haste O God, to deliver me. Make haste to help me, O God. Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, is now, And every shall be; world without end. Amen. Hallelujah! INVITATORY 2

O come, let us worship the Lord; For he is our Maker VENITE All: O come let us sing unto the Lord Let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; And make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God And a great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The strength of the hills is His also The sea is His, and He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Oh, come let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our maker For He is our God And we are the people of His pasture And the sheep of His hand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, is now, And ever shall be; world without end. Amen. HYMN This Joyful Eastertide LW 140 This joyful Eastertide, away with care and sorrow! My Love, the Crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow. 3

Refrain: Had Christ, that once was slain, ne'er burst his three-day prison, our faith had been in vain; but now is Christ arisen, arisen, arisen, arisen. Death's flood hath lost its chill, since Jesus crossed the river: Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver, Refrain My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber, till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number. Refrain INTROIT Exodus 15:2a, 6, 13, 17 18 I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and His rider He has thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation; Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. You have led in Your steadfast love the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them by Your strength to Your holy abode. You will bring them in and plant them on Your own mountain, 4

the place, O LORD, which You have made for Your abode, All: the sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established. The LORD will reign forever and ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. LECTION I Corinthians 15:1-11 John 20:1-18 But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Thanks be to Thee, O Lord. SERMON THE OFFERING HYMN Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds LW 131 Now let the vault of Heav n resound In praise of love that doth abound, Christ hath triumphed, alleluia! Sing, choirs of angels, loud and clear, Repeat their song of glory here, Christ hath triumphed, Christ hath triumphed! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Eternal is the gift He brings, Wherefore our heart with rapture sings, 5

Christ hath triumphed, Jesus liveth! Now doth He come and give us life, Now doth His presence still all strife Through His triumph; Jesus reigneth! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. O fill us, Lord, with dauntless love; Set heart and will on things above That we conquer through Thy triumph, Grant grace sufficient for life s day That by our life we ever say, Christ hath triumphed, and He liveth! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Adoring praises now we bring And with the heavenly blessèd sing, Christ hath triumphed, Alleluia! Be to the Father, and our Lord, To Spirit blest, most holy God, Thine the glory, never ending! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! PRAYERS KYRIE All: Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, Who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day, Defend us in the same with Thy mighty power And grant that all our doings, being ordered by Thy governance May be righteous in Thy sight; Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost Ever one God, world without end. Easter Festival Service Celebrate the Resurrection April 20, 2014 AS WE GATHER: Christ is risen! And, say the apostles, so are you! Though we with all believers who have gone before us still await the great day of the resurrection of all at the return of the Lord, His resurrection seals our faith and confidence today that because He lives, you also will live (John 14:19). Our celebration this day is reflected every Sunday throughout the year. The first day of the week is the day of resurrection. By the power of the resurrection the first day is also the eighth day, the eternal day, the day of eternal life, the day when, through baptismal repentance, the Old Adam in us... be drowned and die... and a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever (Holy Baptism Fourth, Luther s Small Catechism). Let us celebrate with the women who first visited the empty tomb in that strange combination of joy and fear, which is faith in the power of resurrection. We rely on the power of God in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 1:13). PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Mighty God and Savior of the world, accompanied by the sign of an earthquake and the announcement of angels, You proclaimed to the faithful women the astonishing news of the Lord s resurrection and sent them as witnesses to tell the first disciples. By the power of Your Word, this festival day enable us both to believe this good news and to proclaim it to others in our daily life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. HYMN Jesus Christ is Risen Today LW 127

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES 1 Corinthians 15:20, 54 57 Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Death is swallowed up in victory! O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:8 11 I caused Your grief and sighing by evils multiplying as countless as the sands. It was our sin that caused Christ to die to ransom us from the death of sin. By the power of Your death and resurrection, Lord Jesus, forgive us and raise us to new life. LSB 453:4 The risen Jesus is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. Whoever believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. In the stead and by the command of my 2

Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN Jesus Lives!
