KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 1 ddd KNIGHTLY NOTES Y2K PLUS XV EDITION, ISSUE VIII AUGUST 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Fr. Marc s homily on Sunday, 12 July, started with children and what they aspired to when they grow up. Some wanted to be like Captain America, a hero who was brave while others wanted to be an astronaut, exploring outer space. It reminded me when I was a child I wanted to be a fire fighter. This homily also sparked a memory of when I worked for a living. I was scanning our bulletin board and saw a flyer that caught my eye. It read, Would you at 12 years old be proud of what you have accomplished today? That really got me thinking. I guess I would be proud of what I have accomplished over these many years. Married with two children, finished college, worked hard, and had a very respectable job. My biggest accomplishment that really makes my 12-year-old self really proud is my association with the Knights. This is where my life really has meaning. Helping to raise funds for charity, assisting the poor and destitute, working in the ministries at our Parish. The fraternal friendships I have made with the Knights and their wives. I am truly blessed. I am sure if all of you think back when you were 12 years old, would you be proud of what you are today? I believe you would be proud. May God Bless you and your family and keep you healthy and safe, Mike LaRiccia Grand Knight Council 10442 ST JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO. 10442 7260 WEST SAHARA AVENUE LAS VEGAS, NV 89117 Fs10442@gmail.com 702-289-9298 *****************************************************************************************************

KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 5 PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and the lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen. KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 9 ************************************************************************ Ladies Auxiliary *********************************************************************** Dear Ladies, We had a great month of July with installation of officers on July 18 th, followed by the Council Officers, then the PGK Potluck BBQ Party at the Thompsons. Thanks again to Peggy and Don for having us to their lovely home once again. On July 25 and July 26, it was our Religious Goods sales weekend. Thanks to all of those who turned out to help. Our new religious goods committee appreciates all who came out to help. It was a great turnout of helpers and it is appreciated very much. We have a great group who always comes through. Also that weekend, many of us enjoyed the Show at the Suncoast, Society of Seven, featuring Tony Ruivivar. It was a great show and so much fun. Thanks to all who came and showed support for our Brother Tony! Our next meeting is Aug 6 th. We will have a potluck again, at 6pm, with the Knights, and start our meeting after that. So all those that would like to, please feel free to bring your favorite side dish or dessert. Instead of the 50/50 the preference was to do the Nickel Social that we did a couple of months ago. So all those who would like to, please bring a couple of items/treasures to the meeting that we will raffle off/put in raffle tickets for. It was a lot of fun and a good activity fundraiser for the Auxiliary. We have a lot to cover at the meeting. We will be installing our newest members, Alana Russo and Rosemary Martinez, as members. We will be discussing preliminary plans for our spring event, An afternoon of Treasurers and Fellowship. We have been asked to help with the Fourth Degree Installation of Officers that is at our Parish on Aug 22 nd so we will be discussing plans for that as well. We also will be discussing ideas for a retreat in the spring and also a Christmas party. Our next Religious goods sales is Aug 29-30 th. Please continue to support this, for now, our only fundraiser. Just wanted to leave you with a thought Prayer is powerful and it works. "For prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God." St. Teresa of Avila I pray that we and our families keep safe and healthy and guided by the Holy Spirit God Bless, my Sisters! Jolyn Pinzl President, Ladies Auxiliary KOC Council 10442 ****************************************************************************************************** MEDITATION OF THE DAY "God cannot cease to love me. That is the most startling fact that our doctrine reveals. Sinner or saint He loves and cannot well help Himself. Magdalen in her sin, Magdalen in her sainthood, was loved by God. The difference between her position made some difference also in the effect of that love on her, but the love was the same, since it was the Holy Spirit who is the love of the Father and the Son. Whatever I do, I am loved. But then, if I sin, am I unworthy of love? Yes, but I am unworthy always. Nor can God love me for what I am, since, in that case, I would compel His love, force His will by something external to Himself. In fact, really if I came to consider, I would find that I was not loved by God because I was good, but that I was good because God loved me. My improvement does not cause God to love me, but is the effect of God's having loved me." Fr. Bede Jarrett

KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 10 Live On or Leave On Money As your working life progresses, your priorities will likely shift. Many major life events (weddings, births, education costs for children, etc.) are probably behind you. Your focus shifts to those golden retirement years when you can enjoy your hobbies, grandchildren, travel or simply relax at home. During my career as a field agent, I ve had members ask me what they should do with a sum of money they are looking to dump somewhere for safe keeping. First, I tell them that there is no safer place to put their money than with the Knights of Columbus. No one has ever lost money using our retirement products. There are no risks assumed by you, the members. Second, I ask the member a question: Is this money to live on or leave on? I ask this because the answer makes all the difference. If you want a guaranteed flow of cash in retirement, one of our annuity options might meet your needs. If this money is intended as a gift for grandchildren, to assist your wife in the event of your passing or to give to your favorite charity, a Single Premium Whole Life policy might be the best product. When it comes to decisions about your finances and your family s future, don t leave things to chance. Discuss the options with a brother Knight who knows how to help. Someone who s helped many other Catholic families not too different from yours. Someone who can offer you life insurance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products backed by the strength and security of an insurance provider rated among the top in the industry. Call me today to set up a time to meet. You ll only regret that you didn t call sooner. Agent Name : Neil Peters Phone : (702)426-3157 Email: Neil.peters@kofc.org ********************************************* NOTE: All members are encouraged to look into the annuity and insurance programs offered by the Knights. The annuities start at 100 and are a great long term investment. Go to the Supreme Council s website or Contact field agent Neil Peters above for more info or to sign up. With over $92 million in insurance and Annuities in force and 1400 service agents, the Knights are proudly fulfilling Father McGivney s vision of protecting the widows and orphans of deceased Knights. You can also plan and save for your financial security and future retirement. Please take advantage of this special fraternal service. As a Knights of Columbus member, this is a free insurance, annuity and estate planning service for you and your family. *********************************************************************************************

KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 13 Knights of Columbus to Expand Humanitarian Assistance to Suffering Middle Eastern Christians 7/24/2015 K of C Christian Refugee Relief Fund provides desperately needed aid Having already donated more than $3 million in humanitarian aid to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East, the Knights of Columbus will expand its efforts even further with a national campaign to raise funds and foster awareness of the terrible suffering of Christians and others in the Middle East. As part of the K of C effort, a new commercial on the issue will be airing nationally beginning this weekend.. The Knights will also announce additional details of its program to aid Christian refugees at its international convention being held August 4-6 in Philadelphia. In attendance will be archbishops from Iraq and Syria, where the violence against Christians has been particularly severe. An exposé on the deafening silence of the international community on this issue was published in the July 26 edition of The New York Times Magazine: Is This the End of Christianity in the Middle East? It reported that extremist groups are enslaving, killing and uprooting Christians, with no aid in sight. In the article, which was featured on the magazine s cover, author Eliza Griswold reported that, according to a Pew study, more Christians are now faced with religious persecution than at any time since their early history. The Knights began its Christian Refugee Relief Fund in August 2014 with $1 million in matching funds that was quickly met and exceeded by its members and the public. The humanitarian assistance provided has included new housing for those who have had to flee their homes, as well as support for medical facilities in areas flooded with Christian and other refugees. Christians in the Middle East are facing a dire situation and even extinction while the response from the international community has woefully inadequate, said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson. Pope Francis has urged the international community to take action to help Christians in the Middle East, and, as an organization that has long supported victims of religious persecution, the Knights of Columbus is responding by asking our own members, and the public at large, to help us save the lives of people who are being persecuted simply because of their Christian faith. Those wishing to assist with the relief efforts can donate by visiting www.christiansatrisk.org or by sending checks or money orders payable to Knights of Columbus Charities at P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966. The memo portion should indicate that the check is for Christian Refugee Relief. One hundred percent of all donations directly supports humanitarian assistance and raising awareness for persecuted Christians and other religious minorities, especially in the Middle East.
