Holy Family Parish Letters on cars For the most part, I do not respond to anonymous letters or notes that I occasionally receive in the collection basket or in the mail. If it is not important enough for someone to sign their name and give me an opportunity to respond in person to a particular concern, the note is filed in a circular file. This week, however, it is different as someone unknown placed letters on most cars at our 4:00 Mass at St Gabriel s. I realize the person may never get a chance to read this, but there is a chance as our bulletins are available to anyone during the week or on the internet. First, I would like to thank the writer for their concern for our salvation. I, too, am concerned with theirs and have prayed for them. The letter stated that you have 32 years of Biblical studies under your belt. I would like to suggest that in the next 32 years you might want to look at the source of the book you are studying. Sacred Scripture (SS), as we know it today, is a gift for all Christians by the Early Church Fathers. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they are the ones that decided what books would be included and what ones were not authentic. Let me share a parable: A scientist said he found the secret of life. He got an appointment with God and told him I have studied the origins of life, and have found out how to create a human life without you. God said show me. So the scientist said first, you go out and collect about 25 lbs. of dirt at this point, God stated, just a second. Go create your own dirt. Since the beginning of Christianity, SS has been and continues to be protected by the Pope and the Magisterium (the bishops in union with him). This is where the authority comes from, not an individual that says he has studied it and has declared he is the authentic interpreter of SS. Like statistics, which can be used to prove almost any point, SS, taken out of context can be used to prove things that are not there when looked at in their entirety. If one of these quotes is troubling, look it up, and then consider the entire chapter it comes from and see if there is another conclusion you might come to. In the end, there may be times we are still not entirely clear, so we need an authentic voice to help us. The Pope and the magisterium is that clear voice. While I will not respond point by point, I will respond to the attack against Mary, our Blessed Mother. Yes, she needed Jesus Christ as her savior, just as much as Adam and Eve, Abraham, you or me. God is not subject to time, and if He desired to create a perfect creature, preserved from original sin, in preparation to send His only Son in to the world, that is His concern. And as for brothers and sisters of Jesus, the word in Greek and Hebrew for brother and sister is the same as for cousin. Jesus was born in to a family, and that family extended beyond his parents. Joseph may have had siblings and certainly both Mary and Joseph would have had cousins with children. In Middle East society still today, the extended family is considered as a single unit. (cont. on next column) 3 (cont. from previous column) As for your concern about the sexual abuse scandal we have faced and continue to face in our church, yes it is unconscionable. Even one case is one too many. And yes, there have been cover-ups. However, the Church has never condoned any of these actions. Any attempt to hide or cover them up, were (are) wrong. However, there are many good, faithful priests and nuns, (whom are free to marry but have chosen not to) just as there are many good doctors and school teachers (and any other profession that have a problem in this area). It is foolish to condemn the entire Church or any institution for the sins of a few. This is all I have room for at this time. Perhaps the discussion could continue if our friend would have the courage and fortitude to give us their name or organization. God bless Fr. Jim HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION.. Thursday, August 15th is Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. CARE & SHARE...As many of you know, Care and Share is a program of Prairie Catholic School that assists families in difficult times with tuition assistance. It is our policy that no one receives a full tuition. However there are some in our community that do need assistance. The way this program works is a family can receive help as they require, and hopefully when their situation turns around they will be able to help keep the program going with a donation of their own. However, we need other funds as well. Any donation to this program will be very much appreciated. You may contact our school principal, Wade Marlow or myself; or you may place a donation in the Sunday collection basket with a note that it is to go to the Care and Share Fund.
