Community Lay Director s Corner Our Gifts And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God s diverse gifts. 1Peter 4:10 CEB Our Fall Walks 82 and 83 are literally just around the corner. There have been many months of preparation leading up to these weekends, but we still have more to do to help the Holy Spirit perform His work. Here are just some of the ways that each of us can serve, according to the gift we have received: If your Reunion Group hasn t finished making your Agape, now is the time to get it completed and plans made to get it to Camp Gilmont. Have you signed up for a slot on the Prayer Vigils? If not, go to our website www.graceemmaus.com, click on the Prayer Vigil tab at the top of the page, and then click on the link for the Walk that you would like to pray for. We all remember what it meant to us on our Walks when we looked at the names of those who were praying for us around the clock. You can attend Send Off, Sponsor s Hour, the Candlelight Gathering, and Closing for either or both Walks. You can help serve the Pilgrims at the Agape Dinner/Christ Banquet on Saturday evening. You can take snacks of all kinds to share with the Pilgrims over the weekend. You can sign up to serve as one of our Gatekeepers on either Walk. Please contact me for more information or to sign up. I want to thank all the Team Members who have been working for the last several weeks attending training, working on their Talks, and supporting each other in enumerable ways so that God can once again work His will during these Walks. As it said in the scripture quoted above, we all have been given gifts, and they are all important. We just need to use them for God s glory, and now is the time. De Colores Brett Walker Community Lay Director 2

Agape AGAPE ITEMS for EACH WALK PREFERRED: 72 of each item stored in Ziploc Bags & the number "72" written with permanent marker on each bag. (This gives the Outside Servant Team more options for distribution.) OPTIONAL: Add your REUNION GROUP NAME ON EACH ITEM (not church name). (The emphasis becomes the Reunion Group.) ALSO, OPTIONAL: Should you "need" to provide 36 Agape items instead of 72, please label Ziploc bags appropriately. De Colores, Pam Martin 903/520-3975 pammar52@yahoo.com Walk 82 and 83 Gatekeepers It is not too late to sign up for both Walks. This is a good way to help with the Walk if you cannot be there all weekend. Please contact Brett Walker by email or phone brettfcall@gmail.com or 903-987- 3090. Prayer Vigil Hey, Emmaus Folks! We need each of you to sign up for at least 1 Prayer slot for our Fall Walks! It Easy to do! Go to graceemaus.com and click on the Prayer Vigil box. There are 2 different links: Men s Walk # 82 and Women s Walk # 83. Select any of the 30-minute slots that have a Sign up next to it. You will receive an email reminder just prior to the Walk. Prayer for the pilgrims and team is needed starting Thursday evening at 6 thru Sunday evening at 6. As you know, this is just as important as serving on the team. Please prayerfully consider signing up for as many slots as the Holy Spirit leads you. God bless you for your prayers. De Colores Garry Mount 3

Agape Dinner/Christ Banquet Please consider being either. A female server for the Men's Agape Dinner on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 OR A male server for the Women's Walk on Saturday, October 14th, 2017. If planning to do so, please let me know in advance (if possible). You will need to arrive at Camp Gilmont by 4 pm to help set up, change into white shirt & black pants (or come dressed in black & white), and accept a brief training on what to do at the 5:30 Agape Dinner/Christ Banquet. Although we are blessing the Pilgrims with our gifts of love & service, we all know that we receive so much more. De Colores, Pam Martin 903/520-3975 pammar52@yahoo.com More Prayers Needed Howdy Emmaus Folks, Prayers Needed! This year s BSF study is on the Book of Romans. I was struck this week with Paul s words to the Church in Rome. He said in Romans 1:9 God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night, I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart by spreading the Good News about his Son. How often do I or We pray for people we have never met? Yes, I have room to grow in this area. We have been asked to pray for the following Walks. Please take time to pray for these Walks as their communities are praying for our Walks. Indiana Kentucky VDC Men's 77 - Sep. 21-24, 2017 Indiana Kentucky VDC Women's 78 - Sep. 28-Oct. 1, 2017 Indiana Kentucky VDC Coed 24 - Nov. 2-5, 2017 Central Indiana Discipleship Women s 5, Avon, Indiana Nov. 2-5, 2017 Thank you for all your prayers, Garry Mount 4

Upper Room Leadership Training On Saturday, November 11, we will be having a Leadership Training session presented by our Regional Upper Room representatives. The Women s Walk is all full with some remaining openings for the men. Emmaus welcomes all Christians of all denominations. Materials are available to help you. I am available at most Emmaus gatherings to help you. Hank Resler Kairos Outside Kairos Outside weekend is at Disciples Crossing October 20-22. Closing is Sunday afternoon. All are invited. 5

Gatherings What a wonderful summer we had at our Gatherings. We want to thank Van UMC, Holly Springs UMC, Payne Springs UMC, and Pollard UMC, for providing their place of worship for the GRACE Community. Our next two gatherings will be Oct. 7 th and 14 th, for the men s and women s candle lights. Worship will begin at 8:00pm. The Nov. gathering is Nov. 4 th at Lane s Chapel in Tyler. The baby chick s meeting is at 4, followed by the meal at 5, and worship at 6. We will end the year on Dec. 2 nd at the Mineola UMC with lunch at noon and worship to follow. Thanks again for all who have helped to make these gatherings so very meaningful. In Christ, Pat Thompson Food for Thought Breathe Just Breathe By Jonny Diaz This is a song that goes thru my mind on a regular basis, and I am also doing a bible study by Priscilla Shirer called Breathe. It is a study that is showing us how to bring Sabbath into our everyday lives. It is based on, Ex 20: 8-11 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: You are to labor six days and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work. That is one of the things I loved about my Emmaus experience, that we had a whole 72 hours to do nothing but worship and celebrate God s love. Make sure we don t leave this at the camp, but take time to incorporate into our everyday life. Remember to Breathe. De Colores, Lisa Palomaria Newspaper Editor 6

A Word from Wynn While in a recent meeting with our Pastor, I noticed his Emmaus worship booklet sitting on a table beside his desk. He calls it his Emmaus table. What a wonderful idea. For some, keeping the book out in the open might be a reminder of our Walk to Emmaus, or the Walks we have worked on or, better yet, a reminder of God s grace and presence. As we learned during our Walks, our worship book is an excellent resource for prayer guidance and meditation. The past several weeks many of us have prayed for victims of the natural disasters occurring in our country. This week as I opened my worship book during team training I was reminded to also pray to be the hands and feet of God. Page 5 of our book shares with us the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi: Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. De Colores! Wynn Harle Reunion Groups On our Emmaus website, check out the groups to see if one of them will work with your schedule. It s so important to stay connected with your Emmaus family. It s also very easy to start your own group, especially if none of those groups fit your schedule. De Colores, Lisa Brewer 7

Contributions to Walks The bank draft authorization for automatic giving to G.R.A.C.E. Emmaus Community is a simple way for you to contribute to help pay for the costs of the Walks. The Board encourages you to consider this alternative, especially if you do not make it to Gatherings. This will help each of us to be consistent in giving to our community. The costs for lodging, supplies, etc. for the Walks continue to increase, and the Board has recently raised the fee for Pilgrims to $165 beginning Spring of 2018. necessary information or attach a voided check. Then, give the form to any board member, or mail the form to G.R.A.C.E. Emmaus Community, P. O. Box 132212, Tyler, TX 75713-2212. The amount donated will show on your bank statement as Tyler Emmaus Community. You can stop the transaction at any time simply by written notification. (It can even be stopped for a month or two, and then resumed.) DeColores! Fran Ayres Treasurer That amount does not cover all the costs for the Walk, and we need your contributions to keep to keep the cost for Pilgrims reasonable. In our efforts to keep our community strong and continue our commitment, we humbly ask that you prayerfully consider where your involvement is needed. To authorize payment, please complete the form (provided on the last page of this newsletter and available at Gatherings) with the 8

Publications Report Wow! It is unbelievable how many publications are necessary for each walk! Not only for the pilgrims but for those working the walks as well. Let s just look at the Pilgrim s list. For each walk (men and women) there is a need for 40 each of the following: The Upper Room Our G.R.A.C.E. Maybe you should. Luke 24:30-31 CEB After He took His seat at the table with them, He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Wayne Brunt I m honored to be considered for a Board position within the Emmaus Community. My name is Wayne Brunt and I live in Hallsville, TX, with my wife Ginger and my two bonus kids Autumn and Andrew. My son Trevor lives and works in San Francisco, CA. I attended Walk #76 in Athens and sat at the table of Mark. I am also an Outrider at The Cowboy Church of Harrison County. I was adopted from The Texas Cradle Society in San Antonio in August of 1962 when I was 3 days old and lived in Bryan, TX until I was 18. I ve have never felt so much love than I did that weekend I went to the Walk from so many Brother s in Christ, so I would like to spread that Love to other brothers and sisters I come in contact with. With God s grace, I have had the honor to be an ATL, a TL in past walks and will be on the Chapel Team on this upcoming 2017 Men s Walk at Camp Gilmont. When I was on the Board of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Tyler, TX, I learned so much from the young men and how important our faith is and how we as disciples must share with everyone we meet. God s love and grace are the most important gift that has been given to us. Christians Must Not Fit In, We Must Stand Out and let the lost know that God s love can conquer any struggle we face. I appreciate every person I have met in my short Walk with this wonderful Emmaus community. Sincerely, Wayne Brunt 15

Betty Buchanan Hey y all! My name is Betty Buchanan. I attended G.R.A.C.E. Walk #57, Spring 2011, and sat at the table of Esther. My husband, Jim, and I worship at Hallsville UMC in Hallsville, TX. My walk experience has included, Chapel Team, Asst. Table Leader, Table Leader, and Asst. Lay Director. Jim and I served as the community registrars, 2013-15, a very challenging and rewarding task, vital to the workings of each walk. Serving the Lord in these positions has been very rewarding and hopefully a meaningful service to the G.R.A.C.E community. The Emmaus Walk was a real life-changing experience for me, as I feel like it certainly was for most all of you. Participation in this community has certainly moved me out of my box, and serving on the board would be an additional opportunity to continue serving God. 16

Scott Catchot Hello, my name is Scott Catchot. I attended GRACE Emmaus Walk #74 at Camp Gilmont in Gilmer, Texas. I sat at the table of St. Paul. The Walk to Emmaus was an awesome personal experience for me that helped solidify and confirm God s direction in my life. I think everyone would benefit from attending a walk. I want to be on the Board to help do my part in seeing that this tool for the development of leaders in the church continues to grow and becomes all that God wants it to be in His body. I believe it has barely begun to shine in this world and the future for Walk to Emmaus is bright and so much more than we could imagine. I would love to work with you all in seeing it come to pass. 17

Kenneth Duesterhoft I attended G.R.A.C.E Community Walk #72 at Disciple s Crossing in Athens, Texas in March of 2015. I sat at the table of St. Matthew. My wife and I attend the United Methodist Church of Frankston. Currently I serve as the audio/visual technician. For the past four years I attended the Texas Annual Conference as a voting district delegate. In the past, I served as chairperson of the Administrative Church Council, chairperson of SPPRC, Lay Leader, a member of Vibrant Church Initiative (VCI), and the Stewardship Committee. I have also been a member of the Committee on Lay Leadership and the local Board of Trustees. I was also a Sunday School teacher and Scout Master. I worked G.R.A.C.E Community Walk #76 as an Assistant Table Leader, Walk #78 as a Table Leader, Walk #80 as an Assistant Table Leader. I have been asked to serve on the Chapel Team at Walk #82 this October. I ended my career in education in 2015 when I retired as a school counselor of a maximumsecurity state prison. I was asked by a member of the Board of Directors if I would be interested in being a nominee for a position on the Board. In the past, I would have said yes immediately. But now I have learned to ask our Heavenly Father where he wants me to serve. I believe that He wants me to serve others by being a Board member. 18

Angela Fitzgerald My name is Angela Fitzgerald. I attended GRACE Community Walk #79 at Camp Gilmont, Gilmer TX in October 2016, and sat at the table of Ruth. I worship and serve with my family at Athens First United Methodist Church. I am in my 28 th year in public education, specializing in Special Education. After completing my walk in the fall, I was honored and privileged to be a member of the inside team. In Spring 2917, I began to serve as the Audio/Visual (AV) technician for the Ladies walks #81 and #83. My walk served as a point of spiritual renewal in my life, and has been a great source of joy. While I am a relatively new member of the GRACE Community, my enthusiasm for the organization and future walks is shown through me involve. It would be an honor to serve on the GRACE Community Emmaus Board of Directors. 19

Debbie Hays My name is Debbie Hays, I attended Walk #8 at Timberline and sat at the table of Ruth. I have been blessed to work on many walks with the GRACE Emmaus community. On the outside team for 2-3 walks. I have served a few times as an assistant table leader, a few times as a table leader, a few times as the AV person, and three times as an assistant lay director. This year I am serving as the lay Director for the women s fall Walk #83. I would like to have an opportunity to serve on the GRACE Emmaus board to assist in furthering the outreach of the Emmaus community. Through the Emmaus three day weekend we empower women and men to know God through his powerful grace, and to become strong leaders for their home church. By providing monthly gatherings we help encourage our community in God s faith and build strong Christian fellowship. Because the GRACE Emmaus community has meant so much to me over the years, I want to have an opportunity to help others experience God s grace and I would like to give back to the GRACE Emmaus community. Please consider me for a Board position for the next three years. De Colores Debbie Hays 20

Nan Haygood Hi. I am Nan Haygood. I took my Walk in October, 1998, at Central Texas Glen Lake. I couldn t be more thankful for the Emmaus experience and my Emmaus brothers and sisters in our GRACE Community. I truly believe that both talking the Walk and serving Walks afterward are life changing!! I would be deeply honored to serve you and our Community on our board, should you choose. Thank you for your consideration and for the sweet relationship we all have as a Community! Nan Haygood 21

Mike Johnston My name is Mike Johnston, and I attended Grace Emmaus walk 50 at beautiful Camp Gilmont during the fall of 2009. I sat at the table of St. Luke, and my wife Karol and I attend the Van United Methodist Church where I serve on the staff as choir director. I have served on numerous committees at the church along with being a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and now am also a Certified Lay Minister. The Emmaus walk experience for me woke me up spiritually and helped rekindle my light for Christ! Even though I have been a Lay Director (Walk 74), the experience of working walks helps me relive the experience in a different way each time I have the opportunity to work on either an outside or inside team. I would cherish the opportunity to work on the Grace Emmaus Board to make sure this experience continues for others as we serve God together in all that we do! De Colores!!! 22
