GABRIEL S PRAYER LINE If you d like to call in your prayer requests, this month s contact is Bette Paquet 630-5019. You can also write in your request in the book at either church. Prayers Requested Gretchen Noonan Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for November: Christians in Asia: That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding,, especially with those of other religions. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Call no one on earth your Father. So why do we call priests Father? Someone asked me that question just last week. It s a good question since the practice contradicts Jesus instruction in today s gospel. In the seminary, they told us that Jesus did not want us to consider anyone on earth to be the source and sustainer of our lives: God is that kind of Father. No one else is! So how did priests get the title? In the early middle ages, parish churches were often attached to a monastery The abbot of the monastery, who was usually the only member of the religious community ordained a priest, was also the pastor of the parish. The rest of the monks were brothers and the abbot was their spiritual father. In time, the members of the parish also referred to him as their Servers Lectors Eucharistic Ministers Greeters Liturgical Ministers - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 11 & 12, 2017 4:00 PM 6:00 PM 8:30 AM 10:30 AM Leo St. Pierre Mike Murphy Alan Cushing James & Jesse Potter Jack Manning Thomas Dube Ayden Cushing Christine Dzujna Doug Dube Anne Howe Ken Merrifield Claire Wallace Annie Calkins George Dzujna Gerry Chenel Betty Meyerhoefer Connie Forest Bette Femenella Kathleen O Brien Father. Since the need for parishes grew faster than the need for monasteries, more of the monks were ordained priests, and they too were called father by their parishioners even though they weren t the abbot of the monastery. And the name has stuck, despite Jesus admonition not to do it. I think the Church has let it happen for two reasons. First, it reminds the priest that, just like a father, it is his responsibility to provide for the spiritual nourishment, growth and guidance of his spiritual family. It also reminds the faithful that the priest is there in God the Father s stead to bring the Lord to them in the Eucharist and bring them to the Lord through the other sacraments. What do you think priests should be called? André LePage Carmen LePage Judy Cloutier Tim Flaherty Bette Flaherty Peg Halm Kelly Chandonnait H)

Thank you to all those who helped make our 19th Annual Angel Fair a success: the volunteers and attendees alike! We will have the results of the fair and all the winners in next week s bulletin. Financial assistance is available and based on need. If you cannot attend on November 19 contact the office at 603-225-3222 for an alternative visit. The school is located at 61 South Street in Concord. You can visit their web site at stjohnregional.org Holy Trinity School Annual Appeal for Technology. On Friday November 10, you can make donations online at www.holytrinitynh.com. ONE DAY ONLY all donations received on November 10 will be matched by the generosity of Peter, Sharon, Sophia, and Carey John Spanos (up to $1,000). A Reminder from Catholic Charities about Medicare Part D: The annual enrollment period for Medicare Advantage and prescription drug benefit plans starts Saturday, October 14, and the deadline for enrollment is Dec. 7. Seniors needing to or wishing to change their plans can contact Servicelink or Leonard Campbell at NH Catholic Charities, 528-3035 with questions.. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL Help! A suggestion has been made to change the Strawberry Festival to a ham and bean dinner (instead of the traditional turkey dinner) with strawberry shortcake for dessert. We would like to hear your opinion on this. Do you think it is time to change? The ham and bean dinner is not as labor intensive as the turkey dinner so it would be easier, with less demand for volunteers It is important to make this decision soon since we rely on donated turkeys for the turkey dinner. Please contact Bette Paquet at bettepaquet@gmail.com or leave a message on 603-630- 5019. If you have a preference please let us know as soon as possible.
