Editor THE CHURCH MOUSE December 2016 Notes From Session Meeting November 15, 2016 Submitted by: Jody Iaderosa, Clerk of Session 2020-100 Years in this building Our church building was completed in 1920 and we are moving toward a memorable celebration year. 1. The basement will have a complete renovation with new electrical wiring, bathrooms and replacement of well worn floor and ceiling tiles. Cost can be covered with some of our capital funds from sale of the manse. 2. Other projects will require donations from the congregation are. A. A new, more inviting front door, that looks like a church. ` B. A "fellowship area" by the back door of the sanctuary C. Railings on the steps to the pulpit are also in the works. Artist s designs will be included in the next Church Mouse. Donations can be sent to the church office, noting the designated project. In other building news, Jeff Hartman is duplicating the chair rack we have in Anderson Hall to provide storage for all of our chairs. 3. In the planning stage: A display showing names of all those who have left memorials. This can be funded by memorials. Cantata & Reception The Cantata is on Sunday evening, December 18 at 7pm. In recent years the choir party has expanded to a reception for all who attend. We provide coffee and wassail and depend on our congregation to fill the tables with 'finger food'. This has become sort of a community fellowship event and makes the evening even more special. New Church Officers On November 27, before we start decorating the sanctuary, there will be a 5 minute congregational meeting to elect our new officers. Nominees are: Deacons: Bonnie Nichols Kaye Gyllenskog Kay Williams Jane Myers (1 yr) Elders: Hans Gotsch Jean Kearney Jody Iaderosa (1 Yr) Caldwell Light Tour Dec. 4 Current plans are to meet at "The Bird Stop" at 5:00 for an evening meal. For those who do not want to eat can car pool leaving the church at 5:30. We can all join to walk around the light show at 6:00. Pray for nice weather! Shoebox Project Bags are at the back of the sanctuary with cards of what to buy. Boxes are for needy children and are marked girl or boy and age. Boxes will be filled on December 11. This is a fun project for all who participate.

Page 2 THE CHURCH MOUSE Directories Are Out If you have e-mail you should have received your copy of the new church directory. There are printed copies at the back of the sanctuary for everyone else. Please make corrections and cross off names you know are going elsewhere so you can return your copy to the Church Life committee to use for next year's directories. Start Your Annual reports Every group in the church must turn in a report of the year, their purpose, accomplishments, financial information, -- you know, the usual "who, what, why, where". This is for the annual report and becomes the history of our church. Please get them to Barb by January 3. Thank you for your pledges The finance committee thanks everyone for their pledges. The feeling is that our congregation is doing its best in giving, and it is deeply appreciated. The Stewardship celebration at Parma Ridge was another wonderful fellowship time. Cost of the dinner was $1335 with $875 donated. Church Officers Retreat January 13-14 Every year church officers have a 'training session' to understand the workings of the church and what their duties are. Friday evening, January 13 will be a meal and evaluation time and there will be breakfast on Saturday morning, followed by separate meetings for Deacons and elders. Both will adjourn when ready, and before noon. Membership Class David is meeting individually with persons who might be interested in church membership. If you are interested you can contact David. Committee on Ministry Evelyn Cates, from the Presbytery Committee on Ministry, will be here on December 11 to meet with the Elders and David to review our relationship with pastor, David Carlson. The meeting will follow worship with lunch at Parma Ridge. All elders should attend. Improving Communication The Session has asked that minutes be sent to the leaders of all other church groups right after the meetings. Minutes are sent out for corrections, and corrected versions are sent again just before meetings which are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Shared Ministry Workshop The Church in a New Time "Growing Your Church September 23-24, 2016 "Behold I Do a New Thing: The Church in a New Time" was the subject of the Shared Ministry workshop attended by Tom Johnston and Jody Iaderosa. The leader, Anthony Robinson, has written three books on "growing your church". Some of this will be shared for you to think about as we continue to focus on concept changes we might make to grow our church. Discussion 2. How it happened: (December) So, a "civic faith" looks a lot like us. We deal with the "technical" surface business of being a church. We think of this as being a Christian country. Not "what kind of faith are you?", but "What kind of Christian are you?" We assumed everyone had the basics of our belief, and was a good and decent person. But then, some began to suspect you could be good and decent without being a Christian. We became a humanistic secular society. Churches began trying to please people who hadn't studied the Bible or had a concept of actually having a relationship with God. This is a pluralistic society now with many non-christian faiths. We are less sure of what it is to be an American. To understand will involve learning and change in perception. We are not facing a technical problem that can be fixed to please the culture. We are facing an "adaptive" challenge. This is part 2 of a monthly discussion series that Jody has asked to be included in the newsletter. Next month will be Adaptive Faith. Editor ATTENTION LEADERS Annual reports due 1st week of January. If you are in charge of any group or committee of the church you have to write an annual report of membership, purpose, activities, accomplishments, goals and finances for the 2016 year. Please start now and get them in by January (3rd). They must be handed out one week before the Congregational meeting, scheduled later in January.

QUILT RAFFLE Again this year, our women s association is raffling off a beautiful quilt. This one is a queen size lightweight quilt made by the very talented Tammy Fisher. All women in the congregation have tickets to sell, and they are also available in the office. Tickets are $1 each. The ticket will be pulled December 18th, after the Christmas Cantata in the community hall. This year, we are collecting the tickets, and will put them all in the bucket at once right before we pull the winning ticket. Kay Williams (722-5669), is the chairperson this year, or you can drop them off at the church office. If you need more tickets, please call Kay! This is YOUR invitation to our Cantata Please join us on Sunday, December 18th, 7pm! Reception & refreshments following in the community hall!

Reminding our Ladies! Our Women s Association will have a gathering on Saturday, December 3rd, in Anderson hall. This will be a luncheon and a style show! All seats have been filled, sorry if you missed out! Check next months letter for photos and news! We are doing this in appreciation for all you do to support our church. Halloween Carnival Photos October 31, 2016 Carol Collins, Women s Association Moderator Organ & Piano Concert We will be having a PEO concert in the sanctuary on Tuesday, December 13th at 7pm. This concert is free to everyone that would like to come. Karen Cornwell & Debbie Seifrit will be playing for us again this year, and it is always a wonderful night of music. Refreshments will be served following the concert. Gary finally got it in! Pastor David really does have the answers! Our favorite Pre School teachers: Anna & Susan! The 2 photos above are why we do this kids and grownups both really enjoy & appreciate the carnival! Just some of our great volunteers working the night away! The office has heard nothing but good reports again this year about our carnival. Due to the additions of the haunted house in the Parma Clinic & the Trunk or Treat sponsored by US Bank & the Fire Department, we had a lot more people stop in this year. Always nice to have everything close by and makes a safer environment for the kids. Thanks to Parma PD & the Fire Department for their help!
