Grace and peace to you Sisters and Brothers in Christ- The month of March brings us to the beginning of the season of Lent within the church. For many Christians this marks a time of increased reflection, prayer, and giving. A common question you may have heard at the start of this season is What are you giving up for Lent this year? This comes from the spiritual practice of fasting that Christians have taken part in over the long history of Christianity. Yet, fasting is only one way in which we can participate in the spirit of Lent. The worship preparation website I use each week (sundaysandseasons.com) shares this about Lent: These forty days called Lent are like no other. It is our opportune time to return to the God who rescues; to receive the gifts of God s grace; to believe with the heart and confess with the mouth the wonder of God s love in Jesus; and to resist temptation at every turn. This is no small pilgrimage on which we have just embarked. It is a struggle Jesus knew. It is a struggle Jesus shares. The nearness of the Lord, in bread and wine, water and word, will uphold and sustain us. This year we will begin our Lenten season of church life together with Ash Wednesday worship on March 6 th at 7pm. We will continue to meet each Wednesday throughout March and most of April. You are invited to join in the noontime community worship services and lunch hosted at Faith Lutheran church. You are also invited to soup supper and worship here at Grove Lake every Wednesday evening. Together on these evenings, we will focus on different ways in which we can draw closer to God. Each week we will explore how we can use simple tools and practices to help strengthen our connection with God not just during worship, but all the time. Join us for soup, bread and dessert at 6:30, followed by worship at 7pm. March 6 th - Ash Wednesday Worship March 13 th - 1000 Blessings March 20 th - Colors of Faith March 27 th - The Potter & the Clay April 3 rd - Counting Our Blessings April 10 th - At the Table I can t wait to share this time with you! Blessings, Pastor Tessa

Grove Lake Lutheran Church Council Minutes February 3, 2019 Members present: Tom Langseth, Cindy Baggenstos, Kim Haugrud, Jess Fahje, Rod Hagen, Brenda Brand, Pastor Tessa. Members not present: Irina Arntson, Scott Wolf, Jill Hesteness (teaching Sunday School). The meeting was called to order by new president Kim Haugrud. Minutes of the 2018 Annual Meeting were reviewed. Motion to approve the minutes by Tom, second by Cindy, motion approved. The January financials were reviewed. January income was $7,086.51, expenses were $9,703.89 with a deficit of $-2,617.38. Motion to approve the financials by Cindy, second by Kim, motion approved. Jade Petznick presented the amounts for Synod Benevolence giving that other churches use. Some do a percentage, some have a set amount and some don t give anything. After some discussion it was decided that Pastor Tessa and Kim would check into what can be done regarding the amount we approved in the budget for Synod Benevolence. Pastor Tessa reported that she is getting back into the swing of things. January was difficult with all of the weather cancellations. Lenten services are in the planning stages. The Worship Committee has chosen the hymns through Holy Week and Choir will be resuming with dates and times to be set. Jill sent a report for the Education Committee saying that Sunday school is continuing to go well. Karla has taken over for Amelia teaching the 3 rd and 4 th graders for the remainder of the Sunday School year. Logan and April have continued teaching the preschoolers and Jill is teaching the K-2 nd grade. Lisa Petznick s niece Emily is helping with the music as volunteer credit for school. It is helpful to have her each us some new songs. The kids will sing in church March 3 rd. The committee is starting to think about VBS. An idea has been thrown out to join Faith Lutheran so there will be a larger amount of kids attending. A planning meeting with Faith had to be rescheduled due to weather. Cindy reported that the Outreach Committee has taken care of the arrangements for serving coffee after church. The committee will be meeting soon to plan activities for the year. Tom questioned if it is possible to put services on the internet under our Facebook page or website. Pastor Tessa s husband is knowledgeable of the procedures and will look into it. Melissa Bakken who handles the website will also be consulted. Our membership list needs to be updated for mailings and e-mailings. The Properties Committee was approached by Curt Buck to install wireless boosters for the internet in the church as the signal is not very strong in some parts of the church. He is volunteering to do this. A motion to authorize this by Tom was seconded by Rod and was approved. Also, it is time to see if there is any painting upkeep to schedule with Bob Thompson. If any needs are found, contact the Properties Committee. The cross that had been at the front of the church still needs to be dealt with. At the Annual Meeting it was decided that the Decorating Workgroup (Jan W., Millie N., Mary W.) will met with the Properties Committee to come up with ideas. The large conference table that had been used upstairs is not being utilized and needs to be gotten rid of. A motion was made by Kim to offer it free to anyone in the congregation for one month and then to post it for sale on Facebook Marketplace at a low price for one month then for free for one month. Seconded by Rod, motion approved.

cont. Grove Lake Lutheran Church Council Minutes February 3, 2019 Stewardship Committee had no report at this time. They will be meeting soon. The WELCA group is planning for the Soup, Bread & Pie luncheon on February 24 th. The Band of Faith will also be performing that Sunday. The Men s group has not met yet this year. Youth Committee - Youth group has had several cancellations in January due to the weather. New Business Discussion of doing another directory and what format it should be done in. It is possible that Brenda could assist with this through the Pelican Press. An idea to make an Easter photo backdrop for taking family pictures was discussed. The Decorating Workgroup will be contacted to see if they can come up with something. A motion to adjourn was made by Cindy, seconded by Rod and approved. The next Council meeting will be March 10 th. Hopefully all of the Committees will have met and have reports for the Council to review. We closed with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Brenda Brand, Secretary WELCA News: Monday March 11th and Tuesday March 12th at 9:00 am Quilting with Potluck meeting at 11:30 am. Monday Night Quilting.
