(212) 661-35-27-00 FAX: (212) 535-86-29-77 Skype : abdellah.chekayri4 Current position Associate Professor PROFESSIONAL PROFILE Abdellah Chekayri is associate professor of Arabic at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI), Morocco, since 1995. He earned his Doctorat d Etat in linguistics at Mohamed V University in Rabat in 1999, and Doctorat from Paris 8 University. He has taught and lectured extensively on Arabic language and linguistics in several academic institutions in Morocco and abroad. He taught the Arabic language at middle and high school in France and spent most of his career teaching Arabic for native and non-native speakers at AUI. He served as the Arabic program coordinator and the Arabic summer program director for more than twelve years. Mr. Chekayri has led and managed in the last five years several research projects, funded by different international organizations (USAID, RTI, Kaizen, Chemonics, AMIDEAST, and Linguistic Data Consortium (University of Penn), on Arabic language for native and non-native speakers, as well as on the analysis of the curriculum and textbooks in formal and non-formal education in Morocco. Mr. Chekayri has co-edited a collective in French on Réflexions sur le lexique et l enseignement de l'arabe marocain (July 2018) (Fondation Zakoura, Csablanca) and has edited another collective in Arabic on The Teaching of Reading in the Arabic Language: New Approaches (March 2018) (Al Akhawayn University Press). He also has published the first monolingual dictionary of Moroccan Arabic written in the middle Arabic Dictionary of Moroccan Arabic (Zakoura Foundation, January 2017.) Mr. Chekayri has also published in English and Arabic the leading textbook (Georgetown University Press) for teaching Moroccan Arabic and Culture An Introduction Moroccan Arabic and Culture (2011). He co-edited a collective in French on Issues on Arabic Morphology Problèmes de morphologie arabe: de l empérie à la théorie (1999). Mr. Chekayri has also published several articles and book chapters on the curriculum of the Arabic language, teaching and learning the Arabic language, and linguistics. He served as reviewer of Arabic programs curricula (Moroccan Ministry of Education, Spanish Schools in Morocco, and Effat University in Saudi Arabia). He chaired several study days and training programs for practitioners and decision makers in the field of Arabic teaching and learning in Morocco and abroad.
