Transcription:

Ar-Raqeeb Class 6 28/02/16 The Prophet ﷺ said: إ ن ا لل ع ز و ج ل ي ع ط ي الد ن ي ا م ن ي ح ب و م ن ل ي ح ب و ل ي ع ط ي الد ين إ ل ل م ن أ ح ب ف م ن أ ع ط اه ا لل الد ين ف ق د أ ح ب ه "Verily, Allah the Exalted gives the world to those He loves and to those He does not love, but He only gives the religion to those He loves. Whoever is given the religion, then Allah has loved him." Allah doesn't give the favour of religion and faith to just anyone, He chooses among His servants. Feel the importance of what you're doing. Allah chose you out of all the people. In (49:7): Allah made faith dear to your heart. The fact that you love Allah, want to know about Him, is something granted to you by Allah. It is He who made disbelief, rebellion, and disobedience to Him hateful in your heart. It's Allah's action - not yours, the teachers, or anyone else's. And whomever Allah has done that for is of the Rashidoon. They are the guided ones amongst Allah slaves; the ones whom Allah chose. This is a huge

blessing from Allah. Understand how much Allah favours you when He teaches you about Him. And Faith is the best deed in Allah's sight. ع ن أ ب ي ه ر ي ر ة أ ن ر س ول ا لل صلى هللا عليه وسلم س ئ ل أ ى األ ع م ال أ ف ض ل ق ال " اإل يم ان ب ا لل و ر س ول ه " It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah was asked: "Which deed is best?" "He said: Faith in Allah and His Messenger" ع ن أ ب ي ذ ر رضى هللا عنه ق ال س أ ل ت الن ب ي صلى هللا عليه وسلم أ ى ال ع م ل أ ف ض ل ق ال " إ يم ان ب ا لل و ج ه اد ف ي س ب يل ه " Narrated by Abu Dharr, "I asked the Prophet, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and to fight for His Cause." Belief in Allah entails belief in His existence, His names, attributes, actions. Knowing Allah, and then worshipping Him according to it, is the most beloved deed. And when the Prophet ﷺ said it is the best of deeds, it indicates its great reward and heaviness on the scales. Try your best to learn as much as you can about Allah, call Him by His names - He loves that you say, Ya Ar-Rahman, have mercy on me, Ya Ar-Razzaq, provide for me, etc."

Allah watches our hearts, concerns, thoughts, utterances, actions. We are under his observation throughout our lives. We cannot hide from Allah. Believe that Allah is watching you, what you're doing, what you're thinking of. If you really believe in Allah's name Ar-Raqeeb - which entails His names Al- Aleem, As-Samee, Al-Baseer, Al-Hafeeth, - it will: 1) Make you a Muhsin. And Ihsan is the highest state of Eeman; to perfect your worship to Allah. 2) Make you sincere 3) Make you modest - avoid what's shameful. 4) Make you practice Taqwa In (4:1): O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you. What will help you be pious and fear Allah?

How can I practice Taqwa? The Prophet ﷺ said: Temptations and trials will be presented to men s hearts like the way a reed mat is woven, stick by stick. And any heart which is filled by them will have a black mark put into it. But any heart which rejects them will have a white mark put into it. The result will be that there are two types of hearts: one white like a white stone that will not be harmed by any turmoil and temptation so long as the heavens and earth endure; and the heart black and dust-colored like a vessel which is overturned, not recognizing what is good or rejecting what is evil but only being impregnated with passion. [Muslim] So when trials are exposed to me, I need to: 1) Beware of sinning with my heart - committing sins like arrogance, envy, pride, jealousy, showing off, hypocrisy, etc. We are put through trials throughout the day. As soon as I go through the test, two parties appear in my heart: Knowledge + Faith sit on one side of the table, and the Shaytan + my evil desires sit on the other. Both sides struggle and fight each other, and this struggle can take place in seconds - which is why many people don't perceive it. But the believer is aware of this struggle which occurs in his heart. If your knowledge about Allah, what He loves and hates, the Halal and Haraam, overcome the Shaytan and your evil self, you've practiced Taqwa. You've won and you'll be rewarded. But if the Shaytan and your evil self overcome you, you'll be the opposite - an arrogant person, a liar, an envious person, a hypocrite, etc. And a sin will be written in your record. E.g. Women love to beautify themselves. This is something natural in them. And Allah ordered the woman to cover herself. My trial is in the middle of the table - if my knowledge and faith is strong, I do what Allah is pleased with, my

concern is Allah's pleasure and no one else, I don't care what the people say. I've passed the test. E.g. The Messenger of Allah said, "I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Judgement with good deeds like the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust" Thawban said, "O Messenger of Allah! Describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly" The Prophet said, "They are your brothers and from your race, establishing the nights with prayer as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, violate the sacred limits of Allah" These people have abundant righteous good deeds. They even get up for prayer at night. But when they are alone, in seclusion, they violate and transgress the limits of Allah. This could take the form of going to a place where no one knows you, so you do whatever you want, totally heedless of Allah's observation. Or it could happen when you're completely silent, just with your thoughts. 2) Protect my heart from turning to or being attached to other than Allah. Regardless of how intense the situation is, don't let your heart have hope that someone else will relieve you. When Ibrahim was thrown into the fire, Jibreel offered him help. But he refused help and said: Allah is able to make our lives easy, but He sometimes makes us our life constricted, go through hardships and difficulties - to test our Tawheed. Will

our hearts turn to other than Allah? Or will we stand at Allah's gate, regardless of what happens, until He cures us, relieves us, guides us? Or will we outwardly say we are trusting in Allah, while our hearts are busy running to people? As your faith increases, as your Tawheed will increase. But as soon as your faith weakens, you'll start turning to people for help, and your heart will get distracted, thinking help is in people's hands and not Allah's. It is from the weak certainty of the person that when Allah gives him a blessing he thanks the people and not Allah. And when Allah prevents him from a blessing, he blames and accuses the people, falsely believing that they are in charge of giving and preventing. He doesn't realize that Allah is the true provider; everything is in His hands. What is our test in this life? - The means E.g. I'm sick. I go to the hospital in search of a cure. In the morning I leave my house saying: Total reliance on Allah. Then as soon as I enter the hospital, I see a doctor I know, and immediately my heart feels at rest towards her. She'll give me the medicine I need, everything will go smoothly, etc. This is the test. Your heart didn't rely on Allah - it turned to the means. And I felt at rest. And this is the problem - you felt that the means would help you for sure. This means that you failed with Allah. Your heart totally absorbed this person, and relied on the means, and forgot Allah, whom you said: when you left your home. Our hearts are susceptible to turn to the people especially when they help and give us. But the people are just means, and Allah's testing our Tawheed. The peoples whose hearts are full of Tawheed will never turn to the means, no matter how strong it is. Their hearts are always attached to Allah and they thank Allah for that blessing.

Allah is Al-Awwal - He comes before the means; He brings the means into existence. Two things are required from us whenever Allah brings the means: 1) Believe that this is from Allah Allah is the One who brought this person to me, Allah is testing me. This should be clear in your heart. This is not because you prayed or because you are a good person. Allah is Al-Mannan. 2) Don't incline towards that means; don't let your heart turn towards it for even a blink of an eye. 3) Allah may make us go through tests and trials to test our Will we think good or bad about Allah? This is another test. E.g. The Shaytan whispers and tells you there's no way of repentance. You've been committing sins for years and years and now you want to repent?! Do you really think Allah's going to forgive you now? And Allah says in (39:53): Say: O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful No matter how great your sins are - if you return to Allah in remorse, regret, with a sincere resolve never to go back to the sin, and increase in obedience to Allah, Allah will forgive you. Why?

Because Don't forget this verse. E.g. You invoke to Allah to relieve you of your distress. The Shaytan whispers, "See, you've been calling Allah and yet your problem has been going on for years and years and Allah still hasn't responded" And Allah says in (27:62): Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Little is that you remember! This is Allah. He answers the call of the distressed person - even if that distressed person is a disbeliever. He'll respond, remove the hardship, as long as you call while being fully sure that no one can help you except Allah. So if Allah responds to the disbeliever, do you not think, that you as a believer will invoke Him, and He won't respond to you? This is bad thinking of Allah. Think positive and expect good from Allah, that whenever you raise your hands asking Him, He will respond - because He promised to in the Qur'an. In (2:186):

And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammed) concerning Me, then, I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright So what should I do? 1) Respond to Allah 2) Believe in Him Bear in mind, it's a good thing if your distress is prolonged. Receive the glad tidings. It means that Allah is elevating your ranks with Him. What do you want? Your distress to be removed immediately, or to meet Allah on the Day of Judgement with high ranks in Paradise? The more you show patience, the more reward you'll get. Repel the whispers of the Shaytan by telling this to yourself. E.g. Ya'qoub stayed waiting and invoking Allah to rejoin him with Yusuf for 35 years. In (12:86): He said: I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you know not He knew that his invocation would not go in vain, that Allah would remove his distress sooner or later. This is what made him have hope in Allah, and not despair of His mercy.

Both Yusuf and Ya'qoub stayed patient for 35 years, until they were reunited. They thought and expected good of Allah, and didn't let their hearts turn to other than Him. Allah mentioned their story in the Qur'an for us to take them as role models. What makes us think evil of Allah? We don't understand the actions of Allah, or how to explain the pre-ordained decrees. We don't understand how it works.. The Qadar in brief: 1) We are not compelled. We have free will to take an action. Evidence: In (18:29): And say: "The truth is from your Lord." Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them (disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). And if they ask for help (relief, water, etc.) they will be granted water like boiling oil, that will scald their faces. Terrible the drink, and an evil Murtafaqa (dwelling, resting place, etc.)!

2) Nothing occurs in this world without the permission of Allah. And the will of Allah is based on His knowledge + wisdom. He knows the right time, the right place, the right person, the right amount. 3) a) Allah knew in advance about all what's going to happen until the Day of Judgement - because He is Al-Aleem. His knowledge encompasses everything: the past, present, future. He knows about everything in detail b) 50,000 years before the creation of the heavens and earth, Allah wrote everything that will happen in the world until the Day of Judgement in the Preserved Tablet. Everything down to a falling from the tree, your cells being renewed, etc. has been written. c) Now, everything happens according to Allah's will and permission. And this all occurs without me having a choice - E.g. Distresses befalling me, sicknesses, etc. This isn't something I chose for myself; Allah willed it for me. In (57:22): No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al- Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah. Whatever happens in this world of killing, hurricanes, floods, or in my personal life of afflictions and sicknesses, it's already written. Allah knew about it, wrote it, and now it's occurring as a test. What will I do? d) - This is my response to the test. Allah created in me the strength and ability to take an action in response to that decree. He gave me senses, a heart, a mind, to react - and I'm responsible for this reaction. In (91:7-10):

And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him; Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). E.g. I am a married woman and don't have children. This is a Qadar of Allah - I didn't choose this for myself, Allah chose this for me. Then comes my action towards this test: a) If I am content, pleased, and believe that whatever Allah willed is good for me, I passed the test with Allah. b) If I'm discontent, displeased, blame Allah, I've failed the test There are people who say, "Allah put me in a bad family, I didn't choose this for myself. He wants to throw me into hellfire" They're thinking evil about Allah. Yes, Allah decreed for you to be born in a non-muslim family, but He showed you the truth. So it's up to you whether you decide to follow it or not.

In (64:11): No calamity befalls, but with the Leave [i.e. decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allah, and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)], and Allah is the All-Knower of everything. If you believe it's a test from Allah, and that He won't write except good for you, Allah will guide your heart. He'll make you feel good, put rest in your heart, although the problem may still exist. He'll keep you firm on the right path. You won't grumble or be ungrateful. If you pass the test -> The next Qadar will accordingly be good If you fail the test -> The next Qadar will be bad E.g. The People of Saba Allah gave them the blessing of gardens with fruits, running rivers, as a test. They didn't choose this for themselves - Allah gave it to them. How did they react towards this blessing? They showed ungratefulness and felt bored. Allah made the distance of traveling easy for them, but they wanted the distance to be longer because that were sick of short travel. They wanted hardship upon themselves. Our children do the same. The table is spread out with food and they complain that they have to eat it everyday. They're getting bored with the blessings of Allah. Because the people of Saba reacted with ungratefulness, the next Qadar was that Allah sent a flood, destroying the gardens, such that it bore thorny trees and had no rivers.

Who is responsible for that? They are. This happened because of their ungratefulness, so Allah punished them. Whenever you feel like your life is miserable, you don't have anyone to blame except yourself. In (14:7): And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe." In (4:147): Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing. Allah doesn't like you to suffer, He wants good for us. But we are failing in our tests. The moment we blame Allah, we become like Shaytan. In (15:39):

[Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Because you misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. In a nutshell: Allah presents trials to us throughout our lives, one after the other, as a test. I need to: 1) Beware of committing sins with my heart (of arrogance, pride, hypocrisy, etc.) 2) Avoid turning or attaching my heart to other than Allah 3) Think good of Allah If we do this, we'll be of the Muttaqeen. And Allah loves the Muttaqeen, He prepared Paradise for them.
