Lord s Day January 28, 2018 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Concerto (per Antonio Vivaldi). J. S. Bach (1685 1750) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer Lord, what a change within us one short hour Spent in Thy presence will prevail to make! What heavy burdens from our bosoms take, What parched grounds refresh, as with a shower! We kneel, and all around us seems to lower; We rise, and all the distant and the near, Stands forth in sunny outline, brave and clear; We kneel, how weak! We rise, how full of power! Why, therefore, should we do ourselves this wrong Or others, that we are not always strong, That we are ever overborne with care, That we should ever weak or heartless be, Anxious or troubled, when with us is prayer, And joy, and strength, and courage are with Thee! Archbishop Chenevix Trench Let us with a gladsome mind, Praise the Lord for He is kind: Ever faithful, ever sure. Let us blaze His name abroad, For of gods He is the God: Ever faithful, ever sure. He with all commanding might, Filled the newmade world with light: Ever faithful, ever sure. He the golden tressed sun Caused all day His course to run: Ever faithful, ever sure.
The horned moon to shine by night, Mid her spangled sisters bright: Ever faithful, ever sure. All things living He doth feed, His full hand supplies their need; Ever faithful, ever sure. Amen. Metrical version of Psalm 136 by John Milton (16081674)/Alan Ridout Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God Now Thank We All Our God No. 98 +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer Merciful God, we humble ourselves in your presence, confessing our unworthiness and sinfulness in your sight. We have broken your holy law. We have not sought first your kingdom and righteousness. We have been anxious and troubled about many things, and have neglected the things that belong to our peace. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, or done to others as we would that they should do to us. Most gracious God, our heavenly Father, who has given your Son, Jesus Christ, to save your people from their sins; forgive us, we beg you; cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and renew a right spirit within us: through the grace of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen. Assurance of Pardon I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Come, Sweet Repose....J.S. Bach, Arr. by A. Schreiner The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets: And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come. Amen. *Congregational Petitions Scripture Lesson Acts 16:2534 (ESV p. 925) Sermon The Gospel: A Summons to Believe *Hymn Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me No. 500 *Benediction +Silent Prayer Grant, O Lord our God, that the words which we have heard this day with our outward ears, may, through your grace, be so grafted inwardly in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us faith, hope, and especially love, to the honor and praise of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord is my Shepherd I never shall want, For lack of his mercies, my soul shall not pant; In pleasant green pastures I daily abide, He leads me the peaceful still waters beside. My soul he restoreth and for his name s sake, The path of true righteousness bids me to take; Yea though I pass through death s dark valley and shade, I will not by evil be ever dismayed.
For thou art my Shepherd, and with me alway, Thy rod and thy staff, are my comfort and stay; My table thou spreadest in presence of foes, My head thou anointest, my cup overflows; Thy goodness and mercy shall follow me still, While life s earnest duties I daily fulfil; Till joyous my spirit shall claim its reward, And dwell evermore in the house of the Lord! February 6 Kelly Gutierrez Baby Shower February 14 Lent Begins February 18 First Sunday of Lent This Evening In addition to the next sermon in our series in 1 Peter, we will be introduced to our final two deacon candidates Chad Isenberger and Eric Knight. The Lord s Supper will be served. The Lord s Supper is observed every Lord s Day at Faith Presbyterian Church alternating between the morning and the evening services. The officers have wanted to retain evening communion not only because all the Lord s Suppers explicitly mentioned in the New Testament were in the evening, but as well to reinforce the importance of Sunday evening worship as a regular part of the observance of the Lord s Day. Evening Prelude Begins at 5:40 p.m. Beautiful music enlivens our spirits and adds to our Sabbath joy. Each Sunday evening prior to the worship service, musicians begin to play or sing at 5:40 pm. Giving Thanks for the Murphree Shower Success A BIG thank you to so many who generously contributed valuable time, energy and beautiful art to the shower/auction for April and Luna Murphree, as well as to those of you who came and so generously purchased those products or donated money to the cause. We raised $3580 which was beyond expectation! And we did it with so much fun! Again, thank you to all who helped to make it a successful and wonderful evening. The Committee for April s Shower From the Session The Session wants to update you about the meetings we have planned to discuss our recommendation for the congregation s vote to transition from a three to a twopastor staff model. In these meetings, we intend also to talk about the senior pastor search and the coming search for a new church administrator. We thought it wise to get input from our brothers in Presbytery as we discuss and consider particularly the specific proposal to move from a 3 to a 2pastor model by mid 2019. There is a standing committee in Presbytery known as Ministers and Churches that exists to provide just that sort of counsel. By request of the ruling elders and with the support of the pastors, representatives of the Ministers and Churches committee met with a group of ruling elders and also met individually with Pastor DeMass and Pastor Rayburn. Since we will want to incorporate their wisdom in our communications to you as well, we are going to briefly delay scheduling meetings with the congregation. We believe we will have their input by the end of January or early February. Gutierrez Baby Shower Ladies, come join us Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 pm, for a delightful evening of celebrating the upcoming arrival of baby girl Gutierrez. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings & Devotions There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer and devotions each week: Wednesday mornings with Phil Perkins: We meet at Old Town Anthem coffee shop at 2312 N. 30th St., Tacoma. This group meets at 6 am for Bible reading and prayer. After several years we continue to focus solely on the Psalms which serve as a life guide. One of the ancient church fathers, Athanasius wrote, Whatever your particular need or trouble, from this same book (the Psalms) you can select a form of words to fit it, so that you...learn the way to remedy your ill. Thursday mornings with Thom Wilson, 6:30 am at the church. Join us in studying through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah as we pray for our concerns and the world around us. Explanation of the Cover Symbol Since the time of the Reformation, the burning bush has been a symbol of the Church. The Latin words are taken from Exodus 3:2 and read...and yet it was not consumed. In one of his letters Samuel Rutherford reminds his correspondent, The bush has been burning these five thousand years, and no man yet saw the ashes of that fire.
