Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Special Items of Interest January 7, Please bring your nativity scenes to share. Also, Pr. Gary Teske will lead adult Sunday school and worship that day. January 28, is the date set for our Annual Meeting. Please plant to attend as we must have 50 eligible voting members in attendance in order to conduct business, which will include ratification of our updated constitution. 725 SW Buchanan St. Phone: 785-233-0767 E-mail: office@topekatlc.org Website: trinitylutherantopeka.org Galatians 4:4-7 When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Our second reading for December 31, the First Sunday in Christmas, provides a reminder that the Christmas season is still with us, at least for most of the coming week, until Saturday January 6, when we enter Epiphany. Epiphany is the celebration of Christ s revelation to the Gentiles. You recall the wise men who came from the East, bearing gifts. We also think of Jesus baptism performed by John the Baptist in the River Jordan--when God s voice was heard This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased (Mark 3:17). It s also the time when the Holy Spirit appeared, as in the form of a dove. If you re like many folks, this is the end of a year, subject to a post-holiday letdown. Maybe everything you hoped for, whether it be gifts given or received, family and friends you planned to see but didn t (or it didn t go as well as you had hoped) or events that didn t work out as you would have liked. Maybe you re getting ready to launch into a new year full of resolutions for change and improvements. From experience, we know that those don t always work out either, do they? But if you take another look at Paul s letter to the Galatians, you might find something of certainty, something to grasp and cling to, something to treasure, indeed, not just for a few days or weeks, but a promise and gift that you can value all year (and life) long the gift of grace and salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. We are God s children, made heirs of eternal life. Through faith we too are set free simultaneously made saints while still living our lives as sinners. As Trinity prepares to, with the help of the Spirit, move into new ministry with a new minister this coming year, I encourage and invite each of you to commit your hearts and minds to the love of God and neighbor. For indeed, we are God s witnesses in the world as well as our community. No one else is going to do it for us stewardship of the gifts God has given us is our responsibility as Professor Mark Allan Powell of Trinity Seminary in Columbus teaches, both a duty and delight. May God continue to bless us and our efforts. Interim Pastor Alan Interim Pastor Alan Saatkamp

Come a little early on Sunday, January 7, and place your scene on one of the round tables (if it's not too large) or one of the long tables near the entry doors. We'll take a little time during Coffee Hour to hear a brief story of where it came from and how it came into your family. We love to see these miniature reminders of Jesus birth. April 29 July 29 Sept. 30 Dec. 30 recipients of our 5th Sunday Special offerings will be designated at the January Council meeting. 3 Youth Group is scheduled to meet January 7th & January 21st.

Doorstep News The Doorstep staff and volunteers would like to thank everyone who donated to Doorstep during the holiday season, and throughout 2017. Doorstep adopted 261 households with 824 individuals from the Christmas Bureau this past December. Because of your generosity, and the Topeka community, we were able to provide food and gifts to our neighbors in need. Along with the start of a new year also comes the cold weather and high utility bills. Please remember your neighbors who are struggling to pay those high bills when looking for a place to donate. Doorstep offers utility assistance to individuals and families throughout the year as funds are available. Souper Bowl Sunday is February 4th! Just around the corner! On this weekend we ask our member congregations to collect soup and crackers to help restock our food pantry. A can of soup can be a meal, and in the past, with a successful collection, we have had soup and crackers to last us into the summer months! Please remember Doorstep when you go grocery shopping, and pick up a few items for your neighbors in need. Also, mark your calendars for the 15 th Annual Operation Soup Line! This year it will be on Wednesday, February 28, from 11am 2pm! Doorstep is open Monday Friday, 8am 3pm for donations. We are located at 1119 SW 10 th Street (10 th & Buchanan). We ask that you do not leave donations outside our building when we are not here. They often become a parking lot mess. Thank you! Adult Sunday School meets on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am. Adult Sunday School class will learn about the Lutheran Church in Russia on January 7 when Pastor Gary Teske leads the class. Pr. Teske was part of a delegation from the Central States Synod who visited Russia last fall. Then beginning on January 14, a seven week series, Animate Bible will begin. Welcome Luncheon for New Baker Nursing Students On Thursday, January 11 at 11:45 we will be hosting lunch for 57 new students who will be beginning their studies toward a bachelor of science in nursing at Baker University's Stormont Vail campus. Your help is needed to welcome the students to our neighborhood. Plan on coming to meet the students and eat lunch with them. Salads and desserts are needed. If you can supply a salad or dessert, contact Diane Bottorff, 231-0379. 4 Life Review Interviews With the start of the Spring semester persons age 65 or better once again have the opportunity to participate in a life review interview with a Baker senior nursing student. The interview is an assignment for one of their classes, Nursing of Elders. Interviews will take place beginning in late January and extending into February. The student who selects you for an interview will contact you to set up an appointment to meet with you at your home or at a mutually agreeable location. To have your name placed on the interview list, contact Diane Bottorff
