First Lutheran Church Church Council News The Church Council and Call Committee had a meeting with the representative from the Bishop s office. The Synod feels that we need a Transition Pastor to lead us in to our new call Pastor. Pastor Kelley is not trained for this purpose, so they recommended that we end Pastor Kelley s services with us and bring in a trained Transition Pastor. Doing this required several nights of meetings to decide how we would do this. The financial state of our church was the deciding factor. We are required to give Pastor Kelley 30 days notice and 30 days of severance and pay him any accrued vacation he has not used, which was one week. We chose to have Pastor Kelley leave before the Transition Pastor comes because we could not afford to pay two pastors in one month, as this would total $14,000. We will use supply pastors, and Mike Hunter led us two Sundays as a volunteer. The supply pastors receive $175 per Sunday INSIDE calendar Words from the Pastor Youth News Women of the ELCA schedule Birthdays Anniversaries Financial Reports www.firstlutheranssc.org office@firstlutheranssc.org The deadline for the August Newsletter is July 21.

plus mileage. We are fortunate to have Pastor Gary Panko and his wife, Bev Rotenberg Panko, living in South Sioux, to fill in for us, saving us mileage. Under this decision it will cost us $7,000 for Pastor Kelley and $575 for the month we have to cover both. Please thank Mike for volunteering to fill in. He saved us $350 in June. We were informed by the Synod that lay persons can administer communion to shut-ins if they have been trained. The wine and bread would go through the sacraments on Sunday and then be used the following week. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact John Koskovich (494-3421). In May, John Koskovich announced that we had a member offer a $1,000 donation with a challenge to the rest of the members to match it to make up the budget shortfall. To date, we have received $5,000 in matching pledges. If you are interested in being part of this, please contact the church or any of the council personnel. The women of the church had their salad luncheon in April. They normally give half of the proceeds to the budget and keep half. This year they are giving it all to the budget, about $3,000. Thank you, ladies, for all your hard work. Lutheran World Relief Now is the time to think about purchasing supplies for Lutheran World Relief school kits. At the end of July and first part of August the stores have school items on sale and we can save much money if we purchase these supplies at this time. Bags and a list of supplies needed for each bag will be on the bulletin board if you wish to fill one. Kits won t be shipped until the first part of November, but now is a good time to buy and save money! For more information contact Lee Mathiason at 494-6125. Outdoor Worship Service There will be an outdoor parking lot worship service on July 3 and August 7 at 10:30 am. Volunteers will direct all participant cars to park in rows facing the west. The service will be broadcast by a PA system and a radio signal so that each car can simply tune in the parking lot service on their radio. This service will be a half hour and will include music, the gospel and sermon, and offering with prayers. Social Ministry The Social Ministry committee collects Pantry items each month to donate to the needs of our community. The Pantry items collected for July are school supplies and nonperishable food items for families in need. Please leave your donations in the shopping cart in the entryway.

With Deepest Sympathy We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the following families. Please keep them in your prayers. Todd and Melissa Baker and family, on the death of Todd s father, Richard Baker, on Tuesday, June 14. Ministry Builders Do you shop at Family Christian Stores? Every time you shop there, you can help our church. Just ask the cashier for Ministry Builder Stamps. For each 20 stamps we receive, we get $5 towards merchandise for the church. You will receive one stamp for every $5 you spend. Giving Statements Second quarter giving statements will be available at the Welcome Center after July 1. Please pick yours up today to help save on postage costs. Saturday Quilting Group The Saturday Quilters will meet July 9 from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. If there are any high school students that would like to come and help quilt to earn community service hours for scholarships, or if you just want to come to learn the process of quilting, you are more than welcome to come! Thank You First Lutheran Church Food Pantry-Thanks to First Presbyterian Church and Circle I for their donations of food. Fortyeight boxes were distributed in May. Bill and Barb McLarty-What a wonderful surprise to have so many of our family present at worship to celebrate our 60th anniversary. We want to thank our family and friends for our many cards and good wishes. We especially want to thank our daughters for arranging it all. We are truly blessed. Electronic Giving Electronic giving is now available. If you are interested in giving electronically or would like more information, please contact the church office. Siouxland Food Bank On June 2 3,540 pounds of food was distributed to 275 adults and children living in 73 households. On June 16 83 households that included 178 adults and 147 children received 5,213 pounds of food. Again, thank you to all the volunteers that help make these wonderful days happen for so many people. All those that receive food items are very appreciative.
