The Un-Doer of the Thread she Spun (24/7/16) When most people perform a good deed, they forget the goal. They become occupied with the details which divert them from the purpose. E.g. In Ramadan people become busy with all the different good deeds, forgetting why they are fasting, praying, etc. We are gathering because we want to increase and maintain the faith we earned in Ramadan. We are approaching another great season, and that is the 10 days of Dul-Hijjah. Maintain your good deeds, perform them continuously, and be cautious of the nullifiers of your deeds. It is foolish to perform abundant good deeds and exert your utmost to perfect it in Ramadan, then take actions which nullify it all. Allah set an example in [16:92]: "And be not like her who undoes the thread which she has spun after it has become strong, by taking your oaths a means of deception among yourselves, lest a nation may be more

numerous than another nation. Allah only tests you by this [i.e who obeys Allah and fulfills Allah's Covenant and who disobeys Allah and breaks Allah's Covenant]. And on the Day of Resurrection, He will certainly make clear to you that wherein you used to differ [i.e. a believer confesses and believes in the Oneness of Allah and in the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad which the disbeliever denies it and that was their difference ﷺ amongst them in the life of this world]." Allah mentions a woman undid the threat she spun after it became strong, and forbids us from being like her. After you have made a strong covenant and promise with Allah and took an oath, do not break it. And Allah was a Witness and Guardian over this Covenant. So do not be like the woman who undid her thread after spinning it. The word "أنكاثا" has two meanings in Arabic: 1) Undoing 2) It is the plural of the word "نكث" which means Violation In this Verse is a warning from Allah and a threat to those who break their oaths. Ibn Kathir and As-Sa'di said there was a foolish woman in Makkah who would spin strongly and undo it. Mujahid and Qatadah said, "This is like the one who breaks the covenant after confirming it" Allah mentions this verse after Verse 91, where Allah says:

"And fulfill the Covenant of Allah (Bai'a: pledge for Islam) when you have covenanted, and break not the oaths after you have confirmed them, and indeed you have appointed Allah your surety. Verily! Allah knows what you do." Generally speaking, this applies to every good deed a person performs. After you perform a good deed and perfect it - do not nullify the deeds you performed. You need to be cautious of the nullifiers of good deeds. It is upon us to safeguard the reward of our good deeds. The Nullifiers of Good Deeds - Self Conceit العجب 1) This is one of the Major Sins which nullifies the good deeds of the person. It makes the person deceived with his deeds, believing that he has abundant good deeds, although does not know if Allah accepted it. This makes him think good of himself and makes him boldly commit sins. The Prophet ﷺ said: " س د د وا و ق ار ب وا و أ ب ش ر وا ف إ ن ه ال ي د خ ل أ ح د ا ال ج ن ة ع م ل ه ". ق ال وا و ال أ ن ت ي ا ر س ول لل ق ال " و ال أ ن ا إ ال أ ن ي ت غ م د ن ي لل ب م غ ف ر ة و ر ح م ة " The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and receive good news because one's good deeds will not make him enter Paradise." They asked, "Even you, O Allah's Messenger "?(ﷺ) He said, "Even I, unless and until Allah bestows His pardon and Mercy on me." [Bukhari #6467] This indicates that we should not rely on our good deeds, because we do not know whether these deeds have been accepted by Allah.

From the attributes of the true believers, is that whenever they perform a good deed, they follow it by fear. In [23:60]: "And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning)." Their hearts tremble out of fear because they are not sure if their good deeds have been accepted or not, and they are sure they will meet Allah and their deeds on the Day of Judgement. On the Day of Judgement, their deeds will be presented to them, and they do not know if Allah will add it to their scales of good deeds or not. They do not know if their deed will be for or against them. It was narrated that Aishah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear. [23:60] Is this the one who commits adultery, steals and drinks alcohol? He said: No, O daughter of Abu Bakr O daughter of Siddiq rather it is a man who fasts and gives charity and prays, but he fears that those will not be accepted from him. [Ibn Majah] example: (Self-Admiration) can take many forms. For العجب To admire ones intellect To feel self conceit towards ones speech To feel conceit towards the knowledge one has To admire ones courage

To admire ones house, car, beauty, what Allah has granted you of position amongst the people, etc. To admire ones good deeds and worship To be proud over what one has spent for good To feel self conceit towards ones tribe, nationality, lineage. To be proud of abundant followers and supporters If you have fallen into any of these, repent, and ask Allah to purify yourself. Remind yourself that it was Allah who gave you all these blessings, be they worldly or religious. 2) To transgress against Allahs sacred limits while in seclusion The Prophet ﷺ said: ق ال : " أ م ا إ ن ه م إ خ و ان ك م و م ن ج ل د ت ك م و ي أ خ ذ ون م ن الل ي ل ك م ا ت أ خ ذ ون و ل ك ن ه م أ ق و ام إ ذ ا خ ل و ا ب م ح ار م لل ان ت ه ك وه ا " I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah will make them like scattered dust. Thawban said: O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and tell us more, so that we will not become of them unknowingly. He said: They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but they will be people who, when they are alone, transgress the sacred limits of Allah. [Ibn Majah] We have to be careful. Being alone could take the form of traveling to another country, where no one amongst your family or friends is with you, so you do whatever you want. This is a test for you.

3) Dishonouring, disrespecting, and violating the rights of Muslims. This is to transgress against their wealth, lives, and defame their honour. The Prophet ﷺ said: " أ ت د ر ون م ا ال م ف ل س ". They said: "O Messenger of Allah! The bankrupt among us is the one who has no Dirham nor property." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The bankrupt in my Ummah is the one who comes with Salat and fasting and Zakat on the Day of Judgement, but he comes having abused this one, falsely accusing that one, wrongfully consuming the wealth of this one, spilling the blood of that one, and beating this one. So he is seated, and this one is requited from his rewards. If his rewards are exhausted before the sins that he committed are requited, then some of their sins will be taken and cast upon him, then he will be cast into the Fire." [Tirmithi] 4) Envy Ibn Taymiya رحمه هللا said, "No human is free from envy. The good people hide it while the wicked people show it" Envy exists in different degrees amongst people. We should purify our hearts from this sickness.

ق ال وا ص د وق الل س ان ن ع ر ف ه ف م ا م خ م وم ال ق ل ب ق ال " ه و الت ق ي الن ق ي ال إ ث م ف يه و ال ب غ ى و ال غ ل و ال ح س د " It was narrated that Abdullah bin Amr said, It was said to the Messenger of Allah :(ﷺ) Which of the people is best? He said: Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech. They said: Sincere in speech, we know what this is, but what is pure of heart? He said: It is (the heart) that is pious and pure, with no sin, injustice, rancor or envy in it. [Ibn Majah] And the Prophet ﷺ said: "إ ي اك م و ال ح س د, ف إ ن ا ل ح س د ي أ ك ل ا ل ح س ن ات, ك م ا ت أ ك ل ا لن ار ا ل ح ط ب " "Avoid envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours firewood. ق ال " ف أ ب ش ر وا و أ م ل وا م ا ي س ر ك م ف و لل م ا ال ف ق ر أ خ ش ى ع ل ي ك م و ل ك ن ي أ خ ش ى أ ن ت ب س ط الد ن ي ا ع ل ي ك م ك م ا ب س ط ت ع ل ى م ن ق ب ل ك م ف ت ن اف س وه ا ك م ا ت ن اف س وه ا ف ت ه ل ك ك م ك م ا أ ه ل ك ت ه م "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dispatched Abu 'Ubaidah bin Al- Jarrah, so he arrived with the wealth from Al-Bahrain. When the Ansar had heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaidah they were attending Salat Al-Fajr. So the the Messenger of Allah performed the Salat and when he finished, they assembled ﷺ before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them, then he said: 'I think that you heard that Abu 'Ubaidah has arrived with something?' They said: 'Yes O Messenger of Allah!

'He said: 'Then receive good news, and hope for what will please you. By Allah! It is not poverty that I fear for you, but what I fear for you is that the world will be presented for you just as it was presented for those before you, then you will compete for it, just as they competed for it, and it will destroy you, just as it destroyed them.' [Tirmithi] When the Scholars explained this Hadith, they said competing with each other means racing towards that thing, while hating for others to precede you in taking it before you. This is the first grade of envy. The highest grade of envy is when Allah bestows a blessing on a people, and the envier wishes the removal of the blessing from them, and the blessing to be given to him. He thinks he deserves it and they do not. Envy has different hidden aspects. People have it and do not know about it. The Scholars said, "Envy is pain in the heart" E.g. You are with your friend, and they praised her and not you. You have a dislikeness for this praise. This feeling happens in seconds, and is Hasad. If the person does not repel it, some of his good deeds will be taken away. "It is an intense grief, sorrow, in the heart, for goodness given to others" Envy is a blameworthy characteristic. The People of the Scriptures and the Hypocrites are attributed with this characteristic in the Qur'an. Envying others has a bad effect on society, so Allah commanded us to seek refuge from it and the envier. In [113:5]:

"And from the evil of the envier when he envies." The Prophet ﷺ said: " ال ت ق اط ع وا و ال ت د اب ر وا و ال ت ب اغ ض وا و ال ت ح اس د وا و ك ون وا ع ب اد ه للا إ خ و ان ا..." "Do not cut off one another, nor desert one another, nor hate one another, nor envy one another. Be you, O worshippers of Allah, brothers." If it happened that you saw Allah bestow a blessing on others which you do not have, what should you do? Allah advised us in [4:32]: "And wish not for the things in which Allah has made some of you to excel others. For men there is reward for what they have earned, (and likewise) for women there is reward for what they have earned, and ask Allah of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is Ever All- Knower of everything." is not just to covet, but to wish. Instead, ask Allah from His أمنية bounty. And Allah knows what to give you and what to give her. He knows what is good for you and what is good for her. And if it's a worldly thing, it's a test for them. What causes envy? Many things, like:

1) Hatred. Whenever you hate someone, you will feel envious towards them if Allah grants them any of the blessings of the Dunya, 2) If the envier looks down upon the envied. He thinks he is better than him, so if Allah gives the latter something, the former will envy him. 3) Lack of faith. The envier does not accept the decree of Allah due to his lack of faith in the Qadar. 4) Covetousness, love, and attachment to this worldly life. Love of leadership and fame. 5) Pride towards the people. And pride is a serious sickness/sin in itself. It is to look down upon the people and reject the truth. What makes the person reject the truth? His self conceit. He admires and thinks highly of himself. So if the truth comes through anyone else, especially someone he deems inferior, he looks down upon them. What is the impact of envy? It has an affect on the envier and on the people 1) It will nullify the deeds of the envier, decrease his faith, and Allahs wrath will be on him. 2) It will raise hatred amongst the people and cause dissension and separation amongst them. What is the remedy? 1) Whenever Allah grants you a blessing, wish the good Allah gave you to be given to others. And this is not something easy. Whenever Ibn Abbas understood a verse from the Qur'an, he said he wished all his brothers knew the meaning of the verse.

And a higher grade than that is to wish your brothers and sisters have even better than you. This is the opposite of arrogance, hatred, envy, self-conceit. A heart that always wants good for other people will not be envious. The Prophet ﷺ said: "ال ي ؤ م ن أ ح د ك م ح ت ى ي ح ب أل خ يه - أ و ق ال ل ج ار ه - م ا ي ح ب ل ن ف س ه " "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother" or he said "for his neighbor, what he loves for himself." [Ibn Majah] 2) Remember that the blessings descend upon people by the. Qadar of Allah. The whole Dominion belongs to Allah, He is Whoever is pleased with what Allah gave him, Allah will be pleased with him. 3) Show patience against the whispers of the Shaytan The Shaytan kindles the fire of envy in your heart. Seek refuge in Allah from him immediately and ask Allah to forgive you. 4) Do good to the one you envy E.g. You don't have a problem with anyone except one person. What will help you overcome this feeling? Helping her, praying for her, etc. The Prophet ﷺ said: "...و أ ت ب ع الس ي ئ ة ال ح س ن ة ت م ح ه ا..." "...And follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out..." [Tirmithi] In [41:34]:

"The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better, then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend." 5) Remember that the real criteria for superiority with Allah is Taqwa. In [49:13]: "...Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa..." This is what should concern you. Do not be considered with who is given what blessings. Leave the people and let our concern be your position with Allah. 6) Let your concern be high ranks in Paradise. Leave the Dunya. There is something very similar to envy, but it is not envy. And that is.

"Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur'an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day." [Agreed upon] You wish, without the wish of removal of the blessing, that Allah will give you the same so that you can of good like them. And you will have the same reward as her. This is called غبته in Islam and is something good. Envy occurs in all ages. It starts in childhood and grows with people until they reach old age. If you are a mother, watch your children. If you watch them and remind them when they are envious, that it is a nullifiers of good deeds, they will know it's a sickness. E.g. Your son tells you that today at school, the teacher praised his friend and not him. Ask him: Why didn't you feel good? You should love for your brother what you love for yourself...do you know what this is called? This is called Hasad. Brothers and Sisters may envy each other when they see their father or mother preferring one of their children over the other. The brothers of Yusuf عليه السالم threw their brother in a well because of it. And one of the sons of Adam killed the other out of envy. And the first sin committed was Iblis and it was Hasad. This is the bad consequences of it, it may lead to killing.
