Then went on to becoming a recreation therapist. She has worked in a number of clinical settings such as long term care home and hospital. I was absent for November, not being clued into the change of meeting date, then there was no meeting in December, so now we re into a brand-new year. I came to the meeting cold, purposely, to make it more of a challenge. Even if I had known that our speaker Karen Trollope, was an associate clinical professor of family medicine at McMaster, with a PHD in medical anthropology. I still would not have been prepared for her fantastic, smitten-at-first-sight, love story, that spanned continents. infatuation is something that Probus speakers rarely probe. And she gave us this in the first minutes of her talk. In 1985, as a young family physician, she opted to visit India to pursue her interest in helping people there get better medical care. Introduced to the head of a department at one of the first hospitals she visited, she found that when their eyes met, her life changed almost instantly. And Karen Trollope was destined to soon became Karen Trollope-Kumar. Their marriage took place within months while Karen proceeded to learn the language. Hindi is complex with 56 characters in the alphabet (instead of our 26) For instance, there are three almost identical pronunciations for the letter T. However, look at the thousands of homo- Members Pages phones in our language. you ll find, right, rite, wright & write. or peak, peek, peck & pique, all common words, identical when spoken, but having entirely different meanings. So, it must also be difficult for a Hindi speaker to master English. Another language problem revealed itself at the Probus meeting. The doctor's power point program could not communicate with our projector. So, we had no visuals, thus we had to imagine the astounding beauty of the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India that kept her there for 11 years. But I believe it was a good thing. It was like radio. we could see the scenery in our mind, and so her Himalayas became the most beautiful things we could imagine. OK, maybe not if we imagined Hamilton s section of the Niagara Escarpment that is referred to as, The Mountain. When I was a photographer at the Spectator, we had a reporter who had been with us a couple of months, and driving with me to an assignment asked, Just where is this mountain I keep hearing about? Now, back to the actual, Speakers Report. After marriage, Karen worked with her husband Pradeep caring for families along the scenic Ganges in the north. They treated all of the afflictions of their patients, including TB and malaria, which proved to be her undoing when it struck her and eventually became the reason, she returned to Canada with her husband in 1996. Back in Canada, Karen was a family physician in West Hamilton until 2014, and now works for Body Brave, a local charity that supports people suffering from eating disorders. She has written an award-winning book, Cloud Messengers," about her years in India, and when she retires she wants to return to the beautiful country, and people, of northern India. And, we 77 beautiful Probustitians enjoyed, and were inspired by her talk. Condolences John Ashfield passed away on December 24. He had been a member of the club since 2011. A note of condolence was sent to the family and a minute of silence was held at our January Meeting. New Members Peter Falladown Peter, born in Hamilton moved to Burlington in the mid-fifties with his parents and two sisters. He attended Burlington Central High School in the late sixties and quickly found employment after graduation as a service technician servicing printers and copiers. Eventually, Peter was employed with Xerox Canada, spanning a career of almost 40 years. He held various positions included technician, trainer, manager, and analyst working throughout South Western Ontario and the GTA. Following retirement Peter renovated his Haliburton area cottage to a four-season home where he lived full time for approximately 10 years. He was actively involved in the local lake association and served as president for about 20 years. Peter and his wife Nesta will be celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary in December 2018.

Hobbies and interests include photography, decorative decoy carving and folk music/guitar. Extreme Weather & Power Outage Procedures In the event that your club may have to cancel a meeting due to inclement weather: When you need to cancel the day before within the AGB s opening hours, PLEASE call the front desk at 905.632.7796 ext. 0 and talk to one of our staff. We generally set up the room the day or night before so having this information ASAP is greatly appreciated. Since the AGB will still be open on the day of your meeting, reception staff will be available to field phone calls and inform guests if they arrive for the meeting. We will place a sign on the parking meter stating that the meeting has been canceled. If you make the decision to cancel after AGB hours, PLEASE leave a message on the main reception line (905.632.7796 ext. 0 ) to let us know you will be canceling the meeting AND email Anji (anji@agb.life) and/or Gillian (gillian@agb.life) to cancel the meeting. In the event that the AGB is closed due to inclement weather or a power outage: If we know the AGB will be closing the day before your meeting, we will let you know asap. During a night of inclement weather, we will make the call by 7am. At this time, our main line will state that we are CLOSED until further notice. If there is a power outage, our phone lines will be down and we are unable to record a general message for the public. The EMER- GENCY CLOSURES document states that in cases of a power outage and no message is recorded, consider the AGB CLOSED. This is for security and safety reasons. Organizers can still email Anji (anji@agb.life) and/or Gillian (gillian@agb.life) for any type of confirmation as we both will have remote access to our emails and will be available during these types of emergencies.

However, he wanted to recognize Bob English who is leaving the Management Committee after 4 years. Bob was an excellent leader who contributed a lot to the group. In Addition, Glen Huffman is leaving the role of Treasurer after 10 years. He also wished to recognize Glen for his outstanding contributions to the Club. V/Pres.
