CARDINAL S APPEAL BEGINS Today begins the 40th Annual Cardinal s Appeal. The Appeal has raised millions of dollars over the years to support the many programs and activities of our parishes, schools and the Archdiocese of New York. Last year, our goal was included with the Renew and Rebuild Campaign. This year we return once again to asking the support of all our parishioners. Cardinal Dolan has made it clear that no contributions to the Church, including the Cardinal s Appeal, are used for the expenses of outreach to victims of clergy abuse. 100% of your donation goes toward: Supports needy parishes by providing emergency funding Provides staff to all parishes for church management and financial assistance Helps educate children in Catholic schools and religious education programs Provides for retired priests Helps to educate future clergy who will serve in parishes The goal of the Archdiocese of NY is $20million. Our goal here at St. Columba is $100,000.00. We ask that you prayerfully consider your gift to the Appeal. If all families participate, we will surely reach our goal. If you have not been contacted already, you may also make your pledge online at: www.cardinalsappeal.org Thank you for your generosity! From Father Michael: Thank you for your support and prayers as I continue to experience foot pain. It began in the spring of 2017. Since then I have had three procedures and have worked with six different doctors. The pain is still there. It often wakes me up at night, making sleep difficult. I am now working with a doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. He has diagnosed a stump neuroma and he is doing everything he can to help me avoid another surgery. I am undergoing a series of treatments twice weekly. Please pray that these treatments may be helpful! GYM AND CAFETERIA SOUND SYSTEM We need to upgrade our sound system that is used in the gym & cafeteria. We are having some issues. Also, we want to make sure it is in perfect operating order for our summer Masses in the school. The cost is $5,000 which was unbudgeted. Would you like to make a donation toward this necessary sound system upgrade? Please see Fr. Michael. Msgr. George Thompson is living at the: St. John Vianney Clergy Center Cardinal Egan Pavilion 5655 Arlington Ave. Bronx, NY 10471 FEAST OF ST. BLASÉ It is a tradition to offer the Blessing of Throats on the Feast of St. Blasé. This year it falls on Sunday, February 3rd. We will offer a general blessing during all weekend Masses, and an individual blessing, if desired, at the end of each Mass. HOSPITAL VISITS & ANOINTING OF THE SICK St. Columba parish is celebrating Scout Sunday on February 10th at the 9am Mass. All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers are encouraged to attend. We will be assembling in the church Narthex at 8:45, prior to Mass. For further information, contact: Dan McCartney at 845-240-2954. If you are having a planned procedure or surgery and would like to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, simply let a priest know before or after any Weekday or Weekend Mass. He will be delighted to pray with you. If you find yourself in a local hospital, simply contact the Hospital Pastoral Care Dept. and they will arrange for the Priest Chaplain on call to Anoint you or your loved ones. If you would like a priest from St. Columba to visit you in the hospital, please call the church office. Due to privacy laws, this information is not available to us, so we must rely upon you to call us. If the church office is closed and it is an emergency, please call the church office number, listen to the prompts and you will be connected directly to a priest on duty. If he does not pick up right away, clearly record your name and phone number, and you will be called back as soon as possible.

Your priests will be taking a Winter Break before the start of Lent. We will be away from St. Columba: Fr. Connolly - February 10-18 THREE WAYS TO SUPPORT NEW YORK CATHOLIC RADIO: ST. CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITES By means of the Catholic Funeral Rites, it has long been the practice of the Church, not simply to commend the dead to God but also to raise high our hopes and to give witness to our faith in the future resurrection of the baptized with Christ. We encourage all Catholic families to continue, as much as possible, to follow the traditional practice of the Catholic Funeral rites - a Wake Service, a Funeral Mass and Burial in a cemetery. These Rites can and should be offered for all Catholics, those who practice their faith and those who did not. We are aware that this may not be practical for all. Please contact a parish priest if you have any questions. One of the blessings of offering the Catholic Funeral Rites is that it gives people various opportunities to visit, to share condolences and to pray for the deceased and their family. On occasion, a person has requested cremation after death. If at all possible, please try to delay cremation until after the Funeral Mass. If this is not possible, we are still able to offer a Funeral Mass for the deceased. Afterward, please ensure that the cremated remains are properly buried in a sacred place such as a cemetery or placed in a columbarium. Please do not: -Keep cremated remains in a domestic residence or at home -Distribute cremated remains among family members -Scatter cremated remains in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way -Preserve cremated remains as mementos in pieces of jewelry or other objects While we try to accommodate all reasonable requests for days and times for Funerals, we ask you not to make any plans until you have met with a Funeral Director, who, in turn, will contact us regarding availability.
