Page four Dear Padre, Why don t Catholics recognize confirmations from other Christian churches if we accept their baptisms? Baptism signs us with an indelible mark, it defines our character. It can never be repeated. A baptism is always held to be valid if a person is baptized with water using the Trinitarian formula (CCC 1256). If a priest is unsure of the validity of a person s baptism, he would baptize the person conditionally, recognizing the earlier baptism if it happened and was valid. The minister of baptism is usually an ordained minister, but in necessity anyone can baptize, including a non-christian if he intends what the Church intends. Confirmation also leaves an indelible mark, as does holy orders, and they also cannot be repeated. What makes confirmation different from baptism is that the minister of confirmation is ordinarily the bishop because this expresses the Apostolic Unity of the Church (CCC 1312). If someone was confirmed in a Church that has apostolic succession, her confirmation would be considered valid. But if she was not confirmed in a church with apostolic succession, the Catholic Church wouldn t recognize the confirmation as valid, and she would have to be reconfirmed. All Christian churches have a common understanding of what the sacrament of baptism is, but while other churches might have Communion, confirmation, and even ordination, their celebration of the sacraments may not include all the requirements necessary for the Catholic Church to consider them valid. As we celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost the birthday of the Church our reading from the Acts of the Apostles speaks of the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples, which enables them to go forward and preach the Gospel. In the first Letter to the Corinthians, we learn of the many gifts the Holy Spirit imparts to the Lord s followers. In the Gospel, Jesus bestows the gift of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples by breathing upon them, so they might go forward to preach the Gospel and lead the Church. The feast of Pentecost reminds us that the work of the Holy Spirit guides and protects the Church and enables her to carry our her mission. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives us, as disciples, the grace and strength to move forward and live out our call of faith. Jesus said at Easter, As the Father has sent me, so I send you. In word, wind and fire, as in the body and blood, Jesus gives us his Spirit once again, renewing in us that same commend he once gave to his first disciples-- that we go out to all the world and make disciples. Come, Holy Spirit come into our hearts, come into our parishes, come into our homes, and renew the face of the earth. For Sister depaul Juliano, OSF, we will have a little Luncheon following the 12:00 noon Mass on Saturday June 17th 2017 Tickets for the Luncheon are $20.00 per ticket for the marvelous meal. We are hoping that many will attend the Mass and the luncheon at the Beeches. Tickets for the Luncheon are available at the Rectory. Please pray as you consider a gift to this year s HOPE APPEAL. Your gift truly will make a difference for our parish and the whole diocese. I am grateful for whatever you can do. On Monday we will welcome James Buttner a seminarian studying for the Priesthood. He will be with us for June and July. A blessing!

Page 5 ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY On Thursday, June 15th at 6 pm. The Altar Rosary will meet for the last meeting of the Year. It will be a Pizza Party. Please call Mary Wahl if you plan to attend. It should be fun. (315-338-7318) It s an opportunity to meet members of the ARS and see what we are all about. We will resume regular meetings beginning September 21st to plan our annual activities and continue Brainstorming other services we can offer our clergy and our parishioners. COMING SOON!!!Beginning mid-june we will be hosting a 4th of July basket raffle. Tickets will be available before and after each Mass. We are gathering together a wonderful array of summer articles that will meet everyone's wants and needs! We want to thank you for all your support throughout the year. If it weren t for the support of our parishioners the ARS would be unable to make wonderful contribution to our Church each year. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU. Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! Preach with Your Life Let us all remember this: one cannot proclaim the gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness of one s life. Those who listen to us and observe us must be able to see in our actions what they hear from our lips and so give glory to God. St Francis of Assisi gave advice to his brothers: Preach the gospel and if necessary, use words. Preach with you life, with your witness. ST. PETER S CHURCH HISTORY (continued) Another factor occurred at this time to give this priest new hope for a place of worship in Rome. In the Fall of 1836 the State of NY finally permitted contracts to be actually let for the construction of Black River Canal which would of course run at the very doorstep of the proposed church and it s pastor.. And who would become the laborers for this engineering marvel? His fellow immigrants from Ireland! In a short time Father Beecham was going up and down these works tending to the needs of his brothers and becoming their agent., collecting and saving funds which he sent home to their families on the Emerald Isle.
