No Christmas this year? Eh? Some years ago, I had read that some aspects of Christmas had been outlawed in certain Melbourne kindergartens. It seemed that in the attempt to be inclusive and supportive of cultural diversity, certain aspects that seem to relate to Christianity will disappear. It makes me think of those t-shirts that say Remember Jesus is the reason for the season. And if the newspapers were right it seems that some people want to forget about Jesus. But what do we really know about Christmas? It s a good question because we live in a world filled with customs, but very few of us ever search to understand their origins. Most people basically do what everyone else does because it is easy and natural and it doesn t require thinking! Firstly, within the Christian community Christmas has been a controversial topic over the past 1500 years. The word Christmas means Mass of Christ, shortened to say Christ-mass, and although it appears Christian, Christmas has in fact an unusual origin. Secondly, it is well known that pre-christian Romans and other pagans, noticed that daylight began to increase after December 22nd, when they assumed that the sun god died. (This was because in the northern hemisphere this is the shortest day of the year called the winter solstice). These ancients believed that the sun god rose from the dead three days later as the new-born and venerable sun. Thirdly, the date is wrong for Christ s birth. In Luke 2:8 it states And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And there is no way that the shepherds would be doing that in midwinter with snow all over the ground. It was more likely to have occurred sometime in September. Finally, have you noticed how Christmas has become a commercial season. It s sponsored, or kept alive, by the heaviest retail advertising campaigns of the year. It seems that the Christmas spirit today is not to honour Christ, but to sell merchandise. So, Jesus wasn t born in December. So, what do we do? What really matters? Whether it s December 25, sometime in September, or any other day of the year, I believe we should use every opportunity to think about Jesus Christ and his message of hope for all of us who live on planet earth. Perhaps it is not so important when He came to this earth, but maybe the most important thing is that He did come. May be the T-shirts should say Remember Jesus in every season. (and that includes December!) It s worth a thought. IT s WORTH A THOUGHT Obitelj Tikulin s velikim nestrpljenjem i entuzijazmom očekuju dolazak u Melbourne Mark B Vodéll Principal
