Docility.one must carefully, frequently, and reverently apply one s mind to the teachings of the learned, neither neglecting them through laziness, nor despising them through pride St. Thomas Aquinas November 6, 2015 Dear Parents, Wow, what a frenetic society we live in! Rush, rush go, go electronic devices to the point of carpel tunnel thumbs...i m in a hurry to get things done to the point where life may be no fun! So, it s super ironic that our Virtue of the Month is Docility. Say What??? one might ask. So funny that our Little Flowers Club is studying this virtue with the first line of the explanation sheet being, Docility is a virtue desperate for a marketing campaign! So, what is docility? St. Thomas Aquinas took this on per the above quotation; however, one could encapsulate docility in the year 2015 in two words: Just Chill! Take a deep breath; offer a prayer; REALLY LISTEN to someone who may have more wisdom than we do; LEARN from those who can teach us through experience; these are just a few of the ways that we can MOVE AWAY from the concept as Americans that docility is cowardice and MOVE TOWARD its real meaning of PRUDENCE in all we do. Docility works hand-in-hand with every virtue to lead us closer to God and HIS will for us, to quote another source on docility. Interestingly enough, this week on Catholic radio there was an example of how docility can lead to moments of Instant Evangelization. One of the commentators told of reporting to a meeting at work with ashes on her head. The first part of the meeting was spent with every person at the table ridiculing and making fun of me about my ashes, she said. Instead of lashing back, I sat back and really listened to them intently. When they were all finished, I simply told them what the ashes meant in a very calm voice. One person responded, Really? I didn t know that. The commentator went on to say that this created an ongoing dialog between her and that co-worker. Now, several years later, that commentator is going to be the godmother for that co-worker s child. Docility led to information information led to conversion conversion led to grace. Functional Compassion is another example of docility in action. The Little Flower of Jesus blogspot: http://littleflowersofjesus.blogspot.com/2015/04/docility.html talked about stepping out of one s comfort level to REALLY respond with CREATIVITY to the needs of the world. Sometimes we might tire of food drives, but these drives are critical to keeping people alive, so with docility, we continue to do those things over and over again. While most of us take shoes for granted in this first world country, more than 300 million children worldwide have no shoes at all. Thus arose Functional Compassion through such organizations as http://becauseinternational.org/. There are Little Dresses for Africa http://www.littledressesforafrica.org/blog/ in which our own ICCS sewing class has been involved. Docility points to the fact, once again, that it s not about us. May our prayer be that we listen intently and then respond to those who are able to teach us how to care. In Him, Elaine Schad, ICCS Principal

The Dean s Dispatch Paul Cuttica, Dean of Students Raising a Catholic Family in a Secular World As Catholic parents we have the sacred responsibility of passing the richness of our Catholic faith to our children. We are the primary educators of our children in all aspects of life. In order to teach our children we must first develop our personal religious life. You can t give what you don t have! We need to participate in the Sacraments, have a prayer life, and live our Catholic beliefs as best we can. We need also to read about our faith, not only in the Bible, but works by Catholic authors. By living our faith, our children, who see us as role models, will emulate our actions, words, and deeds. By studying our faith, we will be able to answer their questions, or at least know where to find the answers. Family prayer should be a part of each day. Preparing for the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent with special customs will instill an appreciation for the richness of our Catholic traditions. Do you have an Advent wreath? Do you have religious symbols (crucifixes, statues of Mary, Jesus, or the Saints, framed religious prints etc.) visible in your home? While on vacation do you take an opportunity to visit a shrine or local church? These all show our children that our faith is important to us. We need to overcome the incredible influence of our secular world. Often God is excluded from real life. There are things we can do to decrease secular influences. Limit the hours of TV your children watch, make use of DVD s that you consider wholesome viewing. Be very watchful of the video games, music, movies, and books that your children are exposed to. Most of all you need to be aware of the potential dangers of Internet use. Monitor all they do and view. This is not making us members of the Secret Police, it makes us good parents to KNOW what our children are doing and guiding them to make good choices. When we become parents, it becomes our responsibility to teach and guide our children to become faith filled, productive citizens of our society and our Church. God bless you all, and I pray daily for our ICCS families and their journey! Paul Cuttica

Hola!!. Somos honestos? MISSION STATEMENT Immaculate Conception Catholic School exists to provide a Christ-centered academic environment designed to promote the total development of the child by serving the mission of the Roman Catholic Church through the educational process. This is accomplished by joining in community as a ministry of Immaculate Conception and St. Mark parishes to educate in the formation of faith and family; to provide a quality academic foundation; to unite in a nurturing and loving Catholic community through worship, through academic formation, through the promotion of peace and justice, through adaptation to change and diversity, through service, and through recognition of the value and dignity of each individual. VISION The vision of Immaculate Conception Catholic School is to teach as Jesus taught. ICCS strives for the development of the whole child through participation in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. ICCS will provide superior academic preparation through a challenging curriculum, while promoting the ongoing formation and spiritual growth of the next generation of Catholic leaders to live the Gospel and to meet their full potential in preparation for a life of service in society.
