Today is celebrated variously, but in New Zealand, since 1980, as Aotearoa Sunday. This is particularly significant for Waiapu and this Cathedral, because of the milestone event of the ordination here of the first bishop for Maori, Frederick Augustus Bennett. Next Sunday will mark the 90th Anniversary of that occasion. At the time some were insisting that a bishop for Maori should be pākeha! The eventual solution was a classic Anglican compromise: the creation of a titular bishopric with no territorial jurisdiction. On 2 December 1928 Frederick Bennett was consecrated as Bishop of Aotearoa in Napier Cathedral. As assistant to the Bishop of Waiapu, he ministered to Māori throughout the country under licence from diocesan bishops, many of whom opposed this arrangement. Today we also give thanks for the work of the current Pihopa o Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev d Don Tamihere, Archbishop, and we are glad to celebrate today with students from Hukarere & Te Aute kura. Napier Foodbank is looking for donations of soap, rice, pasta, canned fish and jam if you would like to donate Bishop Murray s eulogy for the Rev d Graeme Pilgrim A number of people have asked for a copy of this address given at Graeme s funeral, and Bishop Murray has kindly provided it. Copies are available at the rear of the Cathedral. The latest edition of Waiapu News is out now - pick up a copy from the back table, and take a copy to share with friends & neighbours. Christmas tags To help support The Napier Family Centre, we have been given 50 gift tags to be attached to presents for children in need. These tags have the age and gender of the child you will need to buy for. All gifts need to be returned to the church by Monday 10th Dec. If you can help, please see Amy in the office or the greeters after the service. Eftpos is available for any donations you would like to make. Please speak to one of the greeters for this option. Christmas Day Community Lunch 2018 Good news: A festive Christmas Day lunch for those who will be on their own or find Christmas a bit tough for whatever reason is being served this year again. It starts at 12.30 and up to 140 guests can be catered for. The lunch has the backing of the Napier inner-city churches and the NCC, and the support of various business and community groups. We are grateful to the Salvation Army for making their premises available again. We need you too for it to happen. You can do that by letting people know about it and pass on to us the names of those who would like to come as guests. You can also help us by encouraging others to volunteer for a few hours either on 24 and/or on 25 December. Please read the flyer at the back of the church for the details of what and how.
