Vol. 11 No. 4 HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ISLAND LAKE NEWSLETTER WINTER 2018-2019 HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWS A STAR IS RE-BORN DEDICATION OF PLAQUE HONORING THOSE WHO BROUGHT THE STAR TO ISLAND LAKE On Saturday, November 17, 2018, members and guests of the Historical Society of Island Lake gathered at Culver s Restaurant in Island Lake to celebrate and observe the lighting of the renovated star on the Village water tank, and dedicate a plaque honoring the residents of Island Lake who originally built, donated and installed the star in December of 1965. Several years in the planning, this joint project between the Village of Island Lake and the Historical Society, funded with the help of an anonymous donor, consisted of revamping and upgrading the star with LED lights; and the placement of a plaque at the foot of the water tank, honoring the members of the Island Lake Businessmen s Association who made and installed the star in 1965. As many Island Lake residents remember, that was the year of the Palm Sunday tornado that swept through Island Lake and damaged many homes, and caused the death of one child. The star celebrates the courage, resilience, and community spirit of the residents, and has been a beloved landmark in the Village ever since. -1-

The evening was a great success. In attendance were some of the honorees and their families, Mayor Charles Amrich, and past Mayors Alex Schmidt and Thomas Hyde, many current and past Village officers and employees and lots of Island Lake old-timers. Family of Honoree Ray Baird Honoree Carl Woerner Many thanks to Culver s for their hospitality, and generous donation of 15% of the proceeds of the meals and treats to the Historical Society; Brian Bartnick, Larry Loos and the Public Works crew, Ken Wick, JEFCO Crane Services, and artist Doug Wolff of Crystal Lake, who donated to the Historical Society his original painting depicting the placement of the star in 1965. Honoree Earl Porten and his family Original artwork by Doug Wolff -2-

HISTORICAL CHRISTMAS TREE This year again Dona Willard and her crew, Jenny Monday and Liz Nelson, have put up our historical Christmas tree in the Village Hall. Note a new addition: real candles. Not lit of course, but for many years this was the standard Christmas lighting. Usually only lit for a short period of time on Christmas Eve, they have now been replaced worldwide by some really spectacular electric colored lighting. We still like the candles! -3-

PICTURES FROM THE PAST Here s a picture sent us a while back by our long-time members, the Sanderson family. It s from the 1934 Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog. Note the prices, and then note the ice box. I imagine many of the homes in Island Lake started out with one of those in the kitchen. Perhaps it was ordered from a catalog. I fear those days are long gone, but we can still dream of our childhood looking through the Christmas catalog, perhaps from Wards, or Sears. -4-

FACEBOOK FEED Congratulations to our Facebook team, Elizabeth Willard Gorsline and Cindy Graff, for reaching their goal of 500 likes. The photos, story, and live feed from our Star program may have done the trick! Comments Heather Barnette This was a very special celebration!! Thank you! Will Ziegler Very great ceremony. Great job HSIL. Glad my family and I could be a part of it. My daughters will remember this one day. Historical Society of Island Lake thank you for coming! Will Ziegler Thank you for organizing this. We moved into Island Lake 3 years ago from Chicago. There is a major difference and the sense of community here that just makes you feel really good. I have to get on the boat tour next summer. Elizabeth Willard Gorsline Will Ziegler Welcome it is a great town, I grew up here, my Dad grew up here too :) Beth Porten Barnas This is awesome! Rob Johnson it sure is Shirley Street Remember when it first went up -5-

HISTORIC BOAT TOURS When Liz Nelson gave her season-end report at our November meeting that the total for the year was 14 tours, with $869 donations to the Historical Society, all the members gave Liz a round of applause for her excellent job in running the tours again this year. Also again this year, we will continue to reimburse the Village boat sticker fee to the people who donated their boats for the tours. A token amount to help express our big thanks to our volunteers, Harold English, Mike Mascillino, Bob Carpenter, Trevor Mock, Jeff Stinson, Ron Fugle, Jeff Korytkowski, and Peter Nelson. ISLAND LAKE MEMORIES Not so long ago, it was the custom in Island Lake to have a Christmas parade. Here s the news of the one from 1964. Sure hope Santa made a safe landing! CONTACTS Have a picture or idea you d like to share? Or an Island Lake memory you d like to hear more about? HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ISLAND LAKE 2019 CALENDARS MEETING DATES We still have a few of our 2019 Calendars left. Filled with pictures from old-time Island Lake, they are available for purchase at the Village Hall. The cost is $8.00. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, which pays for the printing costs, the total amount of the sale price goes towards the programs and preservation costs of the Historical Society. The Historical Society of Island Lake normally meets on the first Monday of the month. Meetings are scheduled for February 4, March 4, and April 1, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. at the Island Lake Village Hall. Please come and join us if you can. Sometimes we have items from our archives or new acquisitions for review. MEMBERSHIP Welcome to the new members who joined at our Star program: Joanne Schiro, the widow of one of our honorees, Frank Schiro, who did the electrical work on the original star. Mrs. Schiro now resides in Lake Zurich. You would be surprised at the fact that many of our members no longer live in Island Lake; many reside out-of-state, but keep in touch through our Facebook page and our quarterly newsletter. Welcome also to the congregation of St. John s Lutheran Church, and their representative, Adam Finney. St. John s is certainly now one of our oldest members, going back to the beginning of Island Lake! We continue to keep our dues at a nominal rate to encourage membership; the cost is the same modest amount again this year, and only $5.00 for seniors. Your membership renewal for 2019 is due now. We know you will want to keep on receiving our quarterly newsletter of old-time memories. If you haven t already done so, please mail in the attached form with your check. -7-
