Psalm I praise you for I am wonderfully made (Psalm 139). Second Reading John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance (Acts 13:22-26). Gospel John is his name (Luke 1:57-66, 80). JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Families with students previously registered need to be re-enrolled to update our files. JUSTICE AND PEACE NOTES The first theme of the Catholic approach to justice is the dignity of all individual persons. All persons are created by God and all life is sacred. In a recent Apostolic Exhortation Pope Francis wrote the following: Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development. Equally sacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly exposed to covert euthanasia, the victims of human trafficking, new forms of slavery, and every form of rejection. We cannot uphold an ideal of holiness that would ignore injustice in a world where some revel, spend with abandon and live only for the latest consumer goods, even as others look on from afar, living their entire lives in abject poverty. Each of us has to ask ourselves: what is my personal responsibility for applying the pope s teaching on treating all human life as sacred? Does his exhortation have any application to what I see and hear played out daily around the world and reported daily in the media? Is there anything I can do individually or in concert with others? How do I let my government leaders know of my position on these matters?
