Psalm I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). JUSTICE AND PEACE NOTES The second major theme of Catholic social teaching is: The Common Good and Community. The human person is both sacred and social. We realize our dignity and rights in relationship with others, in community. Human beings grow and achieve fulfillment in community life. All people have a right and duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all. The family is a central social institution that must be supported and strengthened. An individualistic Jesus and me approach to life contradicts the obligation to contribute to the common good and community. Therefore, Christians are called to participate in civic society, helping to steer its institutions, governmental and nongovernmental, toward pursuing the common good of all people, especially the poor. The common good is not measured by the typical secular economic standards: GDP, per capita income, stock market prices, etc. The Christian vision of economic life looks beyond them all and asks: Does economic life enhance or threaten our life together and as a community? What do you think: Does our economic system as it presently functions do a good job of advancing the common good? Are there some things that I as an individual can do to foster the common good and community life?
