Adult Faith Forma on Have you been bap#zed as a Catholic but never made your confirma#on? Or were you bap#zed in a Protestant faith tradi#on but would like to become a Catholic? Or maybe you know someone like that. If so, Espiritu Santo is blessed to offer several opportuni#es for bap#zed adults to come into full communion with the Church through the seal of confirma#on and a profession of faith. Our parish schedules adult confirma#ons during Advent, Lent and when Bishop Parkes comes each spring for youth confirma#ons. In addi#on, others make their confirma#on at the Easter Vigil Mass with the unbap#zed adults in our Rite of Chris#an Ini#a#on of Adults (RCIA) group. Some adults, such as those who have been away from the Church or have li2le understanding of our Church, might join us at RCIA in September to explore our Catholic faith, tradi#ons and teaching. Others may need less prepara#on. Many adults have been prac#cing as Catholics for years but never came into full communion through the Sacrament of Confirma#on for any number of reasons. For them, we can provide individual prepara#on with Deacon Steven Girardi based on their understanding, prac#ce of the faith and, equally important, when they feel they are ready to make that profession. This year, we are scheduled to confirm six adults at Espiritu Santo on March 17. Others will be confirmed at the Easter Vigil April 20 and when Bishop Parkes comes to our parish on May 25. It is never too late to inquire about confirma#on or to begin your prepara#on. Your own desire is the first requirement. If you feel God is calling you to the Catholic Church or you have ques#ons or concerns, please contact Deacon Steven in the parish office. Each year during the Great Easter Vigil Mass, Espiritu Santo Parish and Catholic Churches around the world joyfully welcome new adult Catholics into full communion with our universal Church and faith. The Easter Vigil is the culmina#on of a faith and spiritual forma#on journey known as the Rite of Chris#an Ini#a#on of Adults, or RCIA for short. It includes adults from all stages of life who were never bap#zed and want to become Catholic. They are middle or high school teenagers, college students, young professionals and working people, families and re#rees. They are a husband or wife of a Catholic or a person engaged to be married to a Catholic. Some have been a2ending Catholic churches for several years with a spouse or rela#ve. Others have been searching for a faith tradi#on and found a home here. Typically, our RCIA forma#on begins in September with weekly mee#ngs un#l the Easter Vigil, with breaks for holidays and around Christmas. Most will come into the Church at Easter; some decide it is not the right #me for them, and choose to wait. We explore and discuss the faith, tradi#ons, prac#ces, liturgy and theology of the Catholic Church, and more as we strive to accept and to deepen our rela#onship with Jesus Christ. AIer the Vigil Mass and confirma#on, our new Catholics con#nue to meet for a six-week period of Mystagogy to consider what it means to live as disciples and apostles of Christ in our community and the world spreading the Joy of the Gospel. There is no cost or obliga#on only your desire and a willingness to invite Christ into your life. If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming Catholic, or simply curious about it, you are invited to contact Deacon Steven Girardi in the Church office at (727) 726-8477, ext. 310. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 www.espiritusanto.cc

Religious Educa on Religious Educa on The role of the Religious Educa on program is to assist families in teaching their youth about our Catholic faith by: providing opportuni es for family development in knowing Jesus Christ, building a rela onship with God and others, and living a moral and Chris an lifestyle. Our objec ves include: Introduce children in an engaging way to the Catholic faith so that they might con nue to be formed in the faith through their experience of liturgy and life. Provide support to the Domes c Churches within our parish, consis ng of the families of our parishioners and led by the primary catechists of our parish s children, their parents. Encourage par cipa on in the various offerings at our parish for Adult Faith Forma on by parents and catechists. Provide sacramental prepara on that allows for a greater understanding of the mystery received. Create an atmosphere that excites students into delving deeper into the mysteries of our faith, encouraging life-long faith forma on. Religious Educa on classes for grades K through 8th grade are offered on Sunday morning from 10:15-11:30 a.m. or Monday or Tuesday evening from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Classes are held in the Espiritu Santo Catholic School. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based religious forma on program where children can grow in their rela onship with God through a deep engagement in scripture and liturgy. The program will lay the founda on for a life grounded in an awareness of Gods love. Catechists and Assistants Generally a day in the atrium will include a presenta on of a part of the Bible or liturgy given to the children by the catechist; me for the child to work with the materials of their own choice on their own; a gathering me of worship at the prayer table. At Espiritu Santo, we currently offer the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to children from age 18 months through 6th grade. Toddler atrium consists of children from 18 months to 3 years. Level 1 children are between the ages of 3 and 5. Level 2 children are ages 6 to 9. Level 3 children are between the ages of 9-12. Catechists in the religious educa on program are called to herald the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ through weekly instruc on of a classroom of students. Using the materials and resources provided to plan lessons in advance, catechists should form their students in the Catholic tradi on through its rich resources of doctrine, scripture, liturgy, and prayers. Assistants aid catechists in various ways. From taking a endance to se ng up the classroom, helping the teacher with group discussions, and aiding hands-on learning ac vi es. The responsibili es of a catechist or assistant require a weekly commitment. All materials and assistance are given to help the volunteers perform to the best of their ability. www.espiritusanto.cc

Religious Educa on Sacramental Prepara on Separate prepara on programs are offered for First Reconcilia on and First Holy Communion, and Confirma on. First Communion is ordinarily for children in second grade. Confirma on is ordinarily for youth in eighth grade. The Diocese sets guidelines for recep on of the sacraments. A child must be enrolled in formal religious educa on for at least two years prior to receiving the sacrament. The child may receive the sacrament during the second year of religious educa on. Par cipa on in a sacrament is based on: comple on of formal religious educa on, cer fied proof of bap sm, and regular Mass a endance. For more informa on, please contact the Religious Educa on office. Middle School Youth The mission of the middle school youth ministry is to bring teens together in an environment that will foster posi ve rela onships with each other, to help them see where God is in our day-to-day life, to bring them closer to Jesus through the sacraments, and to provide opportuni es to serve God s people through service. The middle school youth of Espiritu Santo meet on the 2 nd and 4 th Fridays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the youth room of the John Bosco Center. Catholic Girls Challenge Challenge is a Catholic Youth Ministry programs for girls in 5th 12th grade to grow in knowledge of their Catholic faith, friendship with Christ, and make a difference and posi ve impact on their families, friends and in the world around them. Challenge is designed around teams of girls around the same age. Each team is led by 1-2 teen leaders. This is small group mentoring or peer ministry where everything is done in teams especially the weekly ac vi es and service projects. Peer mentoring is a life changing experience for teen leaders and makes an impact on the younger girls as they see posi ve role models. Challenge runs weekly during the school year in the John Bosco Center youth room on Sunday a ernoons from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Vaca on Bible School Vaca on Bible School, or VBS, is a fun-filled program offered every summer to connect with the children and families in our parish and community. It is a fun, engaging, hands-on learning experience that brings the children and youth closer to God through a different theme every year. This week-long program employs Bible stories, religious songs, arts and cra s, skits, and other visual media which caters toward elementary school-aged children. Middle school youth may become teen leaders and assist with group instruc on, leadership, and other ac vi es. www.espiritusanto.cc
