I apologize for my delay in getting this month s newsletter out. The winner of our EAA Air Academy Scholarship, Daniel Royer, was announced at last month s meeting which was held at The Academy of Aerospace and Engineering (AAE), when our student members also showed attendees the fruits of their labor with their RV-12 under construction! Dan is a junior at AAE and Captain of our build team. Dan leads his engineering class to build the plane as well as working on it as an Independent Study class. Dan aspires to become a professional pilot! Congratulations Dan! Ken Benson, Daniel Royer and Rick Montero (RV-12 wings in background) Ken Benson, Daniel Royer, Steve Socolosky and Rick Montero In case you haven t noticed, it hasn t snowed in about a week! Unfortunately, with great weather and despite our usual supportive turnout of ground crew and pilots for our last Saturday s Young Eagles Rally, we had an unusually small turnout of about 10 Young Eagles. Thank you to all who helped out, especially Lindsey and Shep, of Hartford Jet Center, who allow us to use Hangar 2! Page 1 of 6

If you haven t already, please either click the link below or look on p. 102 in this month s Sport Aviation magazine to see our very own Treasurer, Dave Armando s Kitfox! (you will need your Last Name and EAA# to see it) What took so long, Dave? https://sportaviation.mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=481532&p=&l=&m=&ver=&view=&pp=#{%22issue_id%22:481532,%2 2page%22:104} We have a special treat! Our guest speaker this Saturday, will be "Mike Allen," traffic reporter, who formerly flew the skies of the Hartford metro area roadways from 1980 until April of last year. Mike will share his experiences with us and I m sure he has some interesting ones! Finally, Please remember your 2018 MEMBERSHIP DUES: $20.00 You can make your check (preferred) out to EAA CH. 166 and bring it to the next meeting or mail it to our Treasurer, Dave Armando, 1765 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury, CT 06033. Thank you! I hope to see you all this Saturday at Brainard Airport! Steve Socolosky Secretary s Report: Minutes for the monthly meeting of EAA Chapter 166, March 24, 2018. Meeting Location: Academy of Aerospace and Engineering (AAE) Meeting was called to order at 10:20 a.m. by President Steve Socolosky. This was an abbreviated meeting focusing on the status of RV12 build by students of AAE. Attendance: >20. Visitors: Many AAE Students and their guests were in attendance. Build Progress Reports AAE RV12 build progress was primary focus of after meeting presentation. Jeremy Jankowski reported on progress of his RV8. Treasurer s Report Dave Armando gave the treasurer s report detailing the current chapter account balance. Secretary Report Ken Benson motioned to accept the minutes from the last meeting. The motion was approved by the membership. Old Business Dave Armando proposed moving our awards banquet to January 2019 so that it can be held jointly at the Hartford Chowder Pot with banquets scheduled by Chapter 1310 and the Connecticut Flight Page 2 of 6

Club. The three groups will be able to secure the large banquet room at the Chowder Pot. No objections were raised by membership regarding this proposal. Russ Beers suggested that given the size of this crowd, any Chapter business will have to be deferred to another date. Our June 30 th meeting will be held at Steve Socolosky s hangar, which will include a cook-out. New Business Jeremy Jankowski provided a tour of the UTC Corporate Hangar to the students of AAE. The students were able to see a number of fixed wing and rotorcraft. The Students enjoyed the tour and greatly appreciated Jeremy s time giving the tour. EAA Air Academy Scholarship Committee Report (committee members: Ken Benson, John Glennon, Rick Montero, and David Rich) o Rick Montero and Ken Benson announced that Daniel Royer is recipient of the chapter s 2018 Advanced Air Academy Scholarship. o The Scholarship Selection Committee released the following statement after the announcement: EAA Chapter 166 received applications from three excellent candidates for the 2018 Advanced Air Academy scheduled for July 27 to August 4 in Oshkosh, WI. The applicants for this scholarship where Joseph Cassineri, Daniel Royer, and Waveris Thomas. The Selection Committee found the decision to choose just one of these candidates to be a difficult decision. To help with the selection process, the Selection Committee evaluated each candidate based on Application Essay Quality, Interview Performance, Chapter Event Participation, Aviation Career Interest, and prior Aviation Related Experience. Based on these evaluation criteria, the Scholarship Selection Committee has chosen Daniel Royer to be the 2018 Advanced Air Academy Scholarship recipient. Congratulations Dan! The members of EAA Chapter 166 look forward to hearing about Dan's experiences at the Air Academy and Oshkosh following his return. The Selection Committee wishes to thank all of the applicants for their interest in the EAA Air Academy and the scholarship opportunity offered by our chapter. We hope to see each of you at future chapter events and our monthly meetings. Up Coming Events Young Eagle flights on April 21 st. The next chapter meeting, April 28, will be held at KHFD. The guest speaker will be Mike Allen, air traffic reporter. The chapter meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m. Page 3 of 6

Sincerely, Rick Montero Secretary, EAA Chapter 166 Following the chapter meeting, the students of the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering gave an excellent presentation on the progress of their RV-12 build. Their presentation was followed by a tour of the AAE workshop and viewing of the aircraft assemblies completed to date. It was great to see the enthusiasm, pride, and depth of knowledge these young men displayed regarding their work. Members of the AAE RV-12 Build Team Page 4 of 6
