PASTOR S DESK THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU The ritual, the liturgy of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the simplest of all the sacraments. It is the only rite that is intended to be a conversation in which the God of mercy has promised to be present. Sometimes people especially those who might not have availed themselves of the sacrament for a long time approach it with some anxiety. Not to worry. The priest will walk you through guiding you along the way. He is, of course, aware that today there are longer intervals between confessions, sometimes many years. In fact, he is joyful that you have found your way back and eager to share the experience of God s mercy with you. It is a good idea to arrive a few minutes early to gather yourself in quiet prayer. Remember the entire process from examination of conscience to absolution is a prayer. In fact as a sacrament, as liturgy, it is a prayer of the whole church that God will grant you mercy and forgiveness. This brief time of preparation in addition to putting you in a prayerful frame of mind will help make your confession brief, complete, concise and clear. There is no need to go into great detail. If the priest has a question, he ll ask. Pope Francis has advised priests that their attitude should be one of listening rather than one of questioning. Listen also to the priest for any advice he may give and ask questions if you have them. The small penance given is symbolic of the sorrow in your heart. Expressing sorrow is essential and we can do that in one of the versions of the Act of Contrition or in our own words. In the bible, we have instances of Christ raising people like Lazarus from the dead. One of the ancient Church Fathers remarked that to forgive sins is a greater work than to raise the dead. We should give thanks for God is good and his mercy endures forever. Listen to the words of a Catholic who described himself as fearful but who one day went to confession and told the priest everything that weighed on him. I now go to Confession with much more faith in God s desire and ability to heal and care for me. Confession reminds me that I can ask the Lord for help with anything. I don t have to be perfect; God will forgive my weakness and give me the grace to do better. More than anything, I can trust that he will love me-no matter what mistakes I make. PARISH LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE A perfect segue to what I have written above is our Lenten Reconciliation Service here in the Church on next Thursday evening March 22 at 7:30m pm. There will be a brief service with scripture readings and prayer. We will have several priests available for individual confession. This will be a good opportunity for annual confession and hopefully a reminder that the sacrament is available more frequently and it is good practice for spiritual nourishment to take advantage of it. ~ Fr. Frank Fifth Sunday of Lent

Weekly Collection March 11, 2018 The average cost to run the parish is $9,800 per week. Our expectation is that 70% or $7,100 will come from the weekly offertory. Parishioners contributed $6,702 for the week ending March 11th. Easter Flowers There are envelopes in the back of the church to donate funds for the flowers to decorate the church at Easter. You can make your donation in honor or memory of a loved one. Their name(s) will appear in the bulletin on Easter weekend. Please be sure to write names clearly so that they will appear correctly in the bulletin. Deadline is March 26th Returning CRS Rice Bowl Donations As our Lenten season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving draws to a close, we want to remind you that the time to return Rice Bowls is approaching. Please bring your Rice Bowls to any Mass on Palm Sunday weekend (April 8-9). We will have baskets in the church for collection. You may offer a cash donation, write a check to OLOS with Catholic Relief Services written on the memo line, or bring your bills and change in the Rice Bowl itself. We thank you for your generosity and hope you have found this act of solidarity to be enriching and fulfilling. Clergy Health & Retirement Trust: Easter Collection This Easter, our parish collection will support the priests of our Archdiocese who share the good news, perform good works, and spread good faith. The Clergy Health & Retirement Trust ensures an appropriate level of care and quality of life for our 590 diocesan priests. Remember the priests who have cared for you, and consider honoring them with a gift that helps care for them. Thank you in advance for supporting the priests who continue to give so much to our Church. Prayers for the Sick Michael Ivancich, Ramona Rosario, Vincent & Jo Chiodo, Anita DeGallo, Francis & Gert DiLoreto, Anthony Venti, Donna Prado, Ruth & Ralph Fretts, Judy Manuel, Judy Grenier, Carol Baggeroer, Marty Johnson, Ashley Kane, Louise Methot, Alissa Porcaro, Mark Kincaid Prayers for the Deceased Robert Parilla, Jr, Ellen Laurie, Ricardo Balarezo, Paul Baro, Lawrence Russell, Kathleen Minerva Encounter Lent with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl Our parish community journeys through Lent with CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that invites each of us to encounter our neighbor, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Each week, Rice Bowl introduces us to an individual who benefits from Rice Bowl and whose story prompts us to consider how we respond to Christ s call to care for our brothers and sisters across the globe. This week we encounter Alefa, who lives in the Chikwawa District in Malawi. This district has battled a long history of food insecurity due to drought, most recently during the 2015 growing season. CRS s Diversification for Nutrition and Enhanced Resilience (DiNER) Fair program offers subsidized agricultural vouchers to beneficiaries to use to purchase droughtresistant seeds. These seeds are helping Alefa s family survive an uncertain climate. How can you care for God s creation this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. March 18, 2018

OLOS Book Group The next OLOS Book Group meeting will be on Sunday, April 15th at 2:00 p.m. in the Bullock Center. All are welcome. We will be discussing When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi. Please come ready to discuss the book. If you have any questions, be in touch with Teresa Coda (tcoda@olossharon.org) or Monica LaFond. About the book: At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade's worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi's transformation from a naïve medical student "possessed," as he wrote, "by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life" into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.

All are welcome! From Senior Deacon Mike The season of Lent draws down and leads us to Palm Sunday (March 25) and the Triduum and thence the Easter season. But, for this fifth week of Lent, we hear the thematic words of Christ as told by the Gospel of John. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me March 18, 2018
