At a previous time, the there was a king of Ayodhyā named Sagara. The king was of righteous spirit and endowed with all good qualities. He had two wives: one Keśinī by name, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha; the second Sumati by name daughter of Ariṣṭanemi.

Even being one having progeny as desire, the king was having no son. Therefore, making supreme effort for progeny, with his wives the king having gone to the Himālaya practiced long austerity. Then when a hundred of years was complete the great sage living there, Bhṛgu by name, honoured by the austerity, gave a boon to that Sagara.

The sage told him this statement. The very great gain of progeny will be yours. Moreover you will gain unmatched fame in this world. One wife will bear a son propagating family, and the other will produce sixty thousands of sons.

Having just heard these words of the sage, the wives without delay asked him, Who of us will bear one famed familypropagating son, who sixty thousands of sons? We wish to know this. May your statement be true, O sage!

Having heard the statement of them, that Bhṛgu replied. Who of you wishes which boon? It s up to you! What you desire, that shall be. Having heard this, by Keśinī the older wife of Sagara the family-propagating son was taken, by the other wife Sumati, the sixty thousands of sons were taken.

Having done pradakṣiṇa around the sage, and having bowed with the head, Sagara returned to his city with his wives. Then when time was complete one son called Asamañja was born in Keśinī. And in Sumati an embryo like a gourd was born.

From the gourd-like embryo split apart, sixty thousands of sons went forth. With passing time, the sixty thousands of sons gained beauty and youth. On one day Asamañja, having evil spirit and being devoid of all good qualities, having taken the sons of Sumati, having thrown them in the water of the river Sarayū, there seeing them drowning he laughed.

But the sons of Sagara did not die. Thereupon since this Asamañja was engaged upon the harm of all townsmen also, therefore he was expelled from the city by Sagara.
