Why in News? Japanese-born Marine biologist Osamu Shimomura, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry, died recently at the age of 90. He was an alma mater of Nagasaki University. About the Discovery He won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien of the United States. They were recognized for the discovery and development of green fluorescent protein (or Jelly Protein). The discovery helped researchers establish ways to watch previously invisible processes such as the development of nerve cells in the brain or how cancer cells spread.

India will be the global host for maternal and child health meeting in December 2018, which will see participation from 100 countries. Organisers: Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH). The maternal mortality rate (MMR), according to the sample registration system (SRS) data, declined by 22% to 130 in 2014-16 from 167 in 2011-13. India aims to achieve an MMR of 70 by 2030.

About Noor Inayat Khan Born in Kremlin, Moscow (1914). Her Father was a direct descendant of Tipu Sultan. In June 1943, she became the first female to be sent into Nazi-occupied France by the Special Operations Executive (SOE). She worked as radio operator with the codename Madeleine. In September 1944, she was arrested and shot. In 2008, journalist-author Shrabani Basu wrote a book titled Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan. In Nov 2012, a statue of hers was unveiled by Princess Anne at Gordon Square Gardens. In 2014, a postage stamp was issued.

The central government has notified Sessions courts in 34 states and Union Territories, which will act as special courts for trial of offences. These offences will be tried under the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988. In case of National Capital Territory of Delhi, Courts of Additional Sessions Judge 02 in each district have been designated as special court. Aim: Every endeavour should be made by the Special Court to conclude it within six months from the date of filing of the complaint.
