Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers still needed to help with Children's Liturgy of the Word other areas. Contact Jessica at 503-659-5790 and jcreshaw@sjbcatholicchurch.org A Huge thank you to the wonderful ladies who volunteered for cleaning the candles. Now while we are on the topic of candles I need to remind all again do not change the candles or add another votive to the glass holder. We found a mess Wednesday morning from people doing this themselves. We found many broken glass holders. When two candles are placed in the same glass the glass breaks which is dangerous. There is a very directed procedure to be sure the glass does not break and is cleaned properly. If you have questions please see Pat. Low Gluten Host (0.01%): St. John s has low gluten host. If you need to receive the Blessed Eucharist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass. At communion time go to the priest line and when it is your turn tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will open a special pix containing your host and you will take a host from the pix for your communion. If you have questions please call Pat at the parish office. Christmas Eve Masses all are invited to bring a little jingle bell to mass to ring during the Gloria Offertory Donations - Fiscal year to date compared to prior 3 years Month 2015/2016 2014/2015 2013/2014 2012/2013 July 44,946 46,408 63,518 62,940 August 53,358 54,580 51,625 51,011 September 45,579 69,808 60,343 53,248 October 47,693 47,764 53,647 62,472 November 55,299 49,554 53,186 54,769 December 100,854 80,835 88,006 January 51,938 49,952 56,680 February 54,167 51,125 69,336 March 58,217 58,937 59,295 April 54,468 61,998 75,138 May 48,994 50,051 59,008 June 53,970 59,031 52,526 Total: 246,875 690,722 694,248 744,429 Change from prior year: Down 21,239 Down 14,205 Down 2,121
Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Promise of Mercy (parish advent theme): The jubilee year of Mercy set by Pope Francis which began last week with the opening of the doors. This symbolism is for each of us to open ourselves to the Mercy Christ offers and to extend this mercy to everyone we encounter. Pope Francis invites us to put the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the center of the year of Mercy. Archbishop Sample invites all Catholics to rediscover this sacrament of mercy. If you have been away for a while, please come back. Attend the penance service this advent. Please come to St. John s penance service on Saturday, December 19 th at 10am in the church. There will be at least 10 priest to hear confessions. Even if you don t know what to say please come the priest will help you along. To help you prepare yourself for this reconciliation service you are invited to reflect on this Examination of Conscience from Pope Francis. Pope Francis Invites You To care for your relationship with God. Am I a Christian who is not nourished by prayer and the sacraments? Do I study the Word of God? To care for your family life Do I give my family time, attention, and love? Do I care for their daily needs? To heal the wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness Have I forgiven others who have hurt me? Have I said I m sorry to those whom I have hurt and have I tried to make amend? (Have I forgiven my self? To watch how you speak Do I need to purify my everyday language from offensive words, vulgarities, and phrases used in the worldly decadence? Do I gossip about others or tell false truths? To care for your work Do I work with enthusiasm and passion? Am I humble enough to thank the Lord for my accomplishments? Do I use my God-given skills and talents in the service of others? To avoid envy, lust, hatred, and negative feelings Are my thoughts and actions destructive toward my relationships, especially with those whom I love? Do my thoughts destroy my inner peace? Do I say insulting things when it would be better to remain silent? Do I surround myself with angry or destructive people? To reach out to those who need you This is how you will be judged. Do I assist the weak, the elderly, the sick? Do I stand up for foreigners or for those who are oppressed? Do I feed the hungry and shelter the homeless? To let go of The bitterness that brings us to revenge. The laziness that leads to existential euthanasia, The finger-pointing that leads to pride, The complaining that leads to despair We invite you to reflect over this examination of conscience to prepare yourself for the parish reconciliation service Saturday December 19 th at 10am. Hope many can make time for the Lord. On this last Sunday before Christmas, the Church s liturgy reveals the true identity of our Redeemer: both the Son of David and the only begotten Son of God, come in the flesh, he is also our high priest, priest of God Most High, All this is recognized by John when he leaps for joy in his mother s womb. Elizabeth recognizes that in Mary the mother of my Lord has come to her.
