St Matthew s Church Durham Road, London SW20 0DE www.stmatthewswimbledon.org Team Vicar: Revd Dr Helen Orchard 020 8286 4584 orchard.helen@gmail.com The Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday 23 rd December 2018 Welcome to St Matthew s, which is part of the Wimbledon Team Ministry in the Diocese of Southwark, Church of England. Our services today are: 8am Said Mass; and 9.30am Sung Mass At the 9.30 service, children are welcome to use the crèche (0-2), or join a group. Pebbles (3-5 yrs) meets in the main room in hall; older children (6-11 yrs) go to the second room in the hall. Opening Voluntary Priére à Notre-Dame (from Suite Gothique) Léon Boëllmann (1862 1897) God our redeemer, who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son: grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour, so we may be ready to greet him when he comes again as our judge; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Processional Hymn NEH 501 Advent Prose The Collect

First Reading Micah 5.2-5a But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 80.1-8 R. Turn us again, show us the light of your countenance and we shall be saved. Hear, of Shepherd of Israel, you that led Joseph like a flock; Shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim. Before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your strength and come and help us. R. O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry at your people s prayer? You feed them with the bread of tears; you give them abundance of tears to drink. You have made us the derision of our neighbours, and our enemies laugh us to scorn. R. Let your hand be upon the man at your right hand, and upon the son of man, whom you made so strong for yourself. And so we will not go back from you; give us life, and we shall call upon your name. R

Second Reading Hebrews 10.5-10 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, See, God, I have come to do your will, O God (in the scroll of the book it is written of me). When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt-offerings and sinofferings (these are offered according to the law), then he added, See, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. I am the handmaid of the Lord: let what you have said be done to me. Gospel Acclamation The Gospel Luke 1.39-45 In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.

1 The angel Gabriel from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame: All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden, Mary, most highly favoured lady. Gloria! 2 For known a blessed Mother thou shalt be, All generations laud and honour thee. Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favoured lady. Gloria! 3 Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head. To me be as it pleaseth God, she said. My soul shall laud and magnify God s holy name. Most highly favoured lady. Gloria! Offertory Hymn HON 516 The angel Gabriel from heaven came 4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born In Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn; and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say: "Most highly favoured lady." Gloria! The virgin is with child and shall bear a Son: and she will call him Emmanuel. Communion Antiphon Communion Motet I sing of a maiden Lennox Berkeley

1 A maiden most gentle and tender we sing: Of Mary the mother of Jesus our King Ave, ave, ave Maria; Ave, ave, ave Maria. 2 How blest is the birth of that heavenly Child, Who came to redeem us in Mary so mild Ave, ave, ave Maria. 3 The Archangel Gabriel foretold by his call The Lord of Creation, and Saviour of all. Ave, ave, ave Maria 4 Three Kings came to worship with gifts rich and rare And marvelled in awe at the Babe in her care. Ave, ave, ave Maria. 5 Rejoice and be glad at this Christmas we pray; Sing praise to the Saviour, sing endless Ave: Ave, ave, ave Maria; Ave, ave, ave Maria. Communion Hymn NEP 601 A Maiden most gentle Post Communion Prayer Heavenly Father, who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the mother of the promised saviour: fill us your servants with your grace, that in all things we may embrace your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Final Hymn NEH 186 Tell out my soul
