Fairfield Good News KNOWING HIM AND MAKING HIM KNOWN July 2017 Upcoming Events From the desk of Pastor Scott: "STOPPING IN JERICHO" July 4 Independence Day July 16 Shoe donation deadline July? 6:30 PM Consistory Meeting As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me recover my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Recover your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. (Luke 18:35-19:6) Fairfield Reformed Church 360 Fairfield Rd. Fairfield, NJ 07004 973-227-5428 reformedchurch@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/ oldchurchnewsong/ On our way from Galilee to Jerusalem, our tour group stopped for lunch at the Temptation Cafe in Jericho. It sits at the edge of the wilderness where Jesus was tempted by Satan. Jericho is one of the most familiar biblical cities. Who can forget the song Joshua fit the battle of Jericho? Yes, we did see the fallen walls. It is a must spot for the tourist to stop.

Cont. from pg 1 Jesus however did not really have time to stop in Jericho. He was on His way to Jerusalem and to the cross. In just a few days, He would be riding into Jerusalem. Surely, there was no time for chit-chat or a sit down meal, because our eternity hung in the balance. Salvation was about to be won. It was the most crucial time in Jesus whole ministry. Jesus needed to get to Jerusalem. That s why I am amazed by Luke s text. Particularly verse 40, which says Jesus, stopped. How wonderful, that Jesus would take the time for one blind beggar. Even with the weight of the moment before him, he took the time to hear the cries of one man. Then as if he had no cares in the world, he stops to make dinner reservations with Zaccheaus. Friends, this should encourage you today. If Jesus was willing to put the destiny of the whole creation on hold to stop for Bartimeaus and Zaccheaus, he is willing to stop for you. Nothing is more important to him than that. He cares enough for you to stop; right here, right now. Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us! July Birthdays 13 Ben Maring 26 Laurie Ann Boling The July Consistory Meeting will be held toward the end of the month. Exact date TBD. Take note: during the summer months, while the Tuesday evening prayer meeting is on hiatus, June will NOT send a weekly prayer email. She WILL send an email when a new prayer request is made known or an update or answer to previous request is reported. Please take home the Sunday PRAYER REQUESTS blue bulletin insert to use in your home prayer time each week.. On June 25th Pastor Scott told us to MAKE PRAYER A PRIORITY (as JESUS did) Mark 1:35-45 Have you set aside a time each day at home to pray for family, the church concerns, our country, our president and other leaders? Try it this summer. It might become a habit you will keep all year round.

FREEDOM PRAYER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY Lord God Almighty, in whose name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (1979 Book of Common Prayer, Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA)

The church received an email from Linda Graziano kindly sending a picture of this painting and telling us about it s history. We found it interesting and believe you will also. From Linda Graziano This painting of your church was done in 1952 by my uncle, Fred Hanson (1932-1987). He grew up in Caldwell Township until the mid -1950s when he moved to Maryland. The painting has been in storage since 1987 and has never been framed. He grew up in Fairfield and wrote a report on when Route 46 was built. My sister-in-law, Sally Graziano, of Easton, NY also has a connection to your church. Her grandfather Schaefer was a lay minister and sang in your choir during the 1930s and 1940s. His family farm was where your airport is now. So a girl from rural Vermont (me) and a girl from rural upstate NY (Sally) became sisters-in-law and had grandparents all from Fairfield. None of my family has lived in Fairfield since the 1950s. Their names were Hilmer and Clementine Hanson (parents of Fred). Hope you found this as interesting as I did. The painting brought everyone together. Martin Takes the Bait Martin arrived at Sunday School late. Miss Walter, his teacher, knew that he was usually very punctual so she asked him if anything was wrong. Martin replied no, that he had been going fishing but his Dad told him he needed to go to church. Miss Walter was very impressed and asked him if his dad had explained to him why it was more important to go to church than go fishing? Martin replied, Yes he did. Dad said he didn t have enough bait for both of us.

Our church sponsored Compassion Int l child is Utukufu Yohana Heli who s now 8 yrs. old and lives with his parents and three siblings in Tanzania. Compassion has partnered with a local Christ-centered church in Utukufu s community to carry out a holistic child development program. The pastor, staff and volunteers are able to provide a safe haven for him and the other children attending the center. Utukufu regularly sends us letters which Compassion personnel translate for us. We just got a letter which reads: Dear Friends My project s name is Anglican Ndala Student Centre. There are 236 children in my project. I go there once a week and my favorite activity to do there is to sweep. My favorite thing about my project worker is to be taught. The translater writes, The child is greeting you, Praise the Lord Jesus. He says that he is fine together with his family. He says that in April they got a two weeks break for Easter and they celebrated it. He says that they are not preparing themselves to do the terminal exam in June so he is asking you to pray for him. He says receive greetings from his family and they love you and they pray for you so that God s blessings will be over you. Below you will see some pictures Utukufu drew on the bottom of his letter. Utukuju s letters are posted on the Mission Bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. If you would like to write to him, please see Carol.

Independence Day Trivia 1. The Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and appointed a committee of five men to work on a draft of the declaration. The committee consisted of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert R Livingston. 2. Thomas Jefferson was delegated by the committee to singly write the Declaration although Adams and Franklin made many revisions before it was finally submitted to Congress on June 28, 1776. 3. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 and signed by the President of the Continental Congress, John Hancock. That day the United States of America was born, the day in history that the U.S. became a free and independent state from England. Going Over Church Finances The church treasurer found a receipt from a local paint store signed by someone named Christian. She wasn t aware of anyone buying paint for the church, so she called the store to point out its mistake. I m sorry, she told the manager, but there are no Christians here at First Baptist Church.
