Third Base From the Pastor I was privileged to teach Youth Sunday School during the month of September. The group reviewed historical background and applications of the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In short, I had a blast and I believe most offerings were tolerable and enjoyable for our youth. Third s youth ministry reflect our overall culture of passionate diversity. The joy is discovering commonality of faith and partnering on journey. Below is a small snapshot of our youth (several are not pictured). Third is privileged and responsible for guiding our youth with quality and mature leadership. A few comments as we navigate an interim period in youth ministry: Interim refers to vacancy in ministerial position, not an interim, or pause, in quality of ministries, discipleship and missions offered to our youth. The Youth Page of Third Base will contain Youth Ministries planned through January 1, 2019. Youth will be guided by Third Staff, Youth Committee (Natalie Thiems, Chair) and Parents of Youth. Youth Search Committee (Kia Moore, Chair) will continue to receive resumes and interview quality candidates. continued on page two Third Base 1
Word from the Pastor All Interims are opportunities for gifted staff and members to stand in the gap and continue spiritual and relationship health of our precious group of teenagers (and older children soon to arrive). Interims raise anxiety for professional positions to be filled in order for ministry and health to continue. Yet, interims are opportunities for healthy pauses prayer and patience are essential. We will exercise patience until Youth Search Committee feels led by God to the best person to professionally guide our ministries to youth. So in the mean time what can you do? All our church family can encourage and connect with our youth. Pray and offer support to our following youth leaders (we are blessed!) Youth Search Committee/Youth Teachers/Youth Committee/Staff Liaisons Natalie Thiems (Youth Committee Chair), Alexandria Hamilton, Demetrius Bryant, Frank Watson, Deborah Watson, Beverly Odell, Kia Moore (Youth Search Committee Chair), Rachael Barnes, Edem Dzunu, and Pastor. Church & Community Baobab People Conference A Success With the generous support of Third Baptist Church, Baobab People successfully held its 2018 conference on September 7 and 8 at Saint Louis University s Center for Global Citizenship. The theme of the conference was Beyond Tolerance: Building Sustainable Communities in the Age of Diversity. Our distinguished speakers included Jerry Bryan, who gave a riveting talk titled Diversity Suffers as Politics and Religion Intertwine - But We Can Recover. Edem and Pamela Dzunu, Cofounder of Baobab People, in their welcome thanked the conference sponsors, Third Baptist Church, Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Center for Global Citizenship at Saint Louis University. They noted, With your support, we continue to create safe spaces where we share our human stories, educate ourselves about the condition of the other, and strive to have a better understanding of and appreciation for our unique backgrounds and experiences. We are grateful for your support of our efforts to encourage dignity for all. On behalf of Baobab People, Edem and Pamela Dzunu wish to express their heartfelt thanks to Third Baptist Church for their support of this conference. Because of your support, conference attendees were able to tell their stories and engage in conversations about how to use diversity as a tool for building and sustaining community. 4 Third Base

Did you know that the paper wrappers and plastic lids provided for carry-and-go coffee on Sunday mornings are recyclable, thanks to the Fellowship crews efforts to procure these over Styrofoam? Please feel free to drop these lids (after a quick rinse) and cardboard wrappers in any of the blue recycling bins around the building. Thank you for thinking of our environment! Operation Christmas Child It is almost time for Operation Christmas Child. You can pick up a box or two on Sunday, September 30 following worship. If you have questions, contact LaVerne Graham. Parking Stickers With the upcoming changes to the parking lot, it is very important for all members and regular attenders to have a TBC parking sticker on their car. If you need a sticker, please see Ella on Wednesday evenings or on Sundays after worship. Member Photos We would like to have a photo of each TBC member for our church database.
