St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion April 17th, 2011 Six days before the solemn Passover the Lord came to Jerusalem, and children waiving palm branches ran out to welcome Him. They loudly praised the Lord: Blessed are you who have come to us so rich in love and mercy. Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: We are to model our lives on that of Jesus - Jesus is our mentor, and the model of how to be a servant of God and others. He taught us that we are to love God with our whole being, and to do His will. We are also to lay down our lives in service to others. As we enter Holy Week, let us resolve to do these things as we take up our cross and follow Jesus. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah tells of a Suffering Servant, who trusts in the Lord to deliver Him. The Letter to the Philippians speaks about Jesus as the servant who emptied Himself of His lofty position in Heaven, accepting death on the cross for our salvation. The Gospel recounts the Passion of our Lord, Christ s ultimate act of love and sacrifice. FACT OF LIFE "I Will Open Your Graves and Have You Rise From Them" [In the midst of human tragedies, there is] our God who stands in deep, human solidarity with us, and through the glory of the Incarnation, embracing fully our human condition. The story of the raising of Lazarus also speaks to us about another kind of death. We can be dead, even before we die, while we are still in this life. This is not only the death of the soul caused by sin but also rather a death that manifests itself through the absence of energy, hope, a desire to fight and to continue to life. We often refer to this reality as death of the heart or spiritual death. There are many people who are enchained in this kind of death every day because of the sad and tragic circumstances of their lives. Who can possibly reverse this situation and revive us, stir us back to life, free us from the tombs that enchain us? (Father Thomas Rosica, Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation). Prayer for Life: Dear Lord, I pray that my life would reflect my redemption so others may see it and trust in You. In obedience to You, and by your grace, I choose to forgive others as you have forgiven me. Amen. MASS INTENTIONS Sun., 04/17 7:30 AM. TOM FIELDER + 9:00 AM. DR. DAVID PETE FRELINGER + 10:30 AM. Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest! (Mat 21:9). With these words the Church enters the holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried out with their hosannas, they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant Pray, save us. The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in Him.

Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor April 17th, 2011 From the Music Director Palm Sunday and Holy Week liturgies are truly a gift to us each year. At St. Anastasia we have had wonderful Triduum Liturgies that were well attended, but we would like to encourage everyone to attend as many of the Liturgies as possible. Our choirs will be ready to help lead our prayer during this most holy time of the year. Greg Koppenhaver NEW PRAYER RESOURCE: FROM AN ECUMENICAL PARTNER - Table Grace in a World Struggling with Climate Change: World Vision, a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization, has published a resource of meal-time prayers as a way to help Christians be mindful God s gift of Creation: Thanking God with Integrity- Volume II: Table Grace in a World Struggling with Climate Change. The prayer booklet points out that with climate change, we have taken the earth for granted. We assume it will always be there, and that it will always produce food to sustain us. This leads to a lack of responsibility for how we steward the natural world, a disposition which has led to climate change and environmental degradation. But, the resource concludes, what better way to begin to accept responsibility than by recovering a spirit of gratitude. It is my hope that as we express gratitude for the love of God conveyed in creation, we will joyfully re-embrace our responsibility to care for that same creation.
