Worship Service City Reformed Presbyterian Church Sunday Morning Worship March 10, 2019 Presider: Elder Jim Partridge Call to Worship: Hebrews 10:19-25 Please stand for the Call to Worship if you are able. Leader Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, People By the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, Leader And since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. People Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. Leader And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, People Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Prayer of Invocation 1

Come Ye Sinners (Words: Joseph Hart 1759; Music: Southern Harmony Folk 1835) Come ye sinners, poor and needy Weak and wounded, sick and sore Jesus ready stands to save you Full of pity love and pow r He is able, He is able He is willing doubt no more Come ye thirsty, come and welcome God s free bounty, glorify True belief and true repentance Ever y grace that brings you nigh Without money, without money Come to Jesus Christ and buy Let not conscience make you linger Nor of fitness fondly dream All the fitness He requireth Is to feel your need of Him This He gives you, this He gives you Tis the Spirit s rising beam. Come ye weary, heavy laden Bruised and broken by the Fall If you tarry till you re better You will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous Sinners Jesus came to call. Agonizing in the garden Lo! your Master prostrate lies On the bloody tree behold Him Hear Him cry before he dies It is finished, it is finished Sinner, will not this suffice? 2

Lo! incarnate God ascended Pleads the merit of His blood Venture on Him, venture wholly Let no other trust intrude None but Jesus, none but Jesus Can do helpless sinners good. Saints and angles joined in concert Sing the praises of the Lamb While the blissful seats of heaven Sweetly echo with His name Hallelujah, hallelujah! Sinners here may do the same. Lenten Reading: Psalm 85:4-13 Psalm 85 Speak Peace (Words & Music: Daniel Snoke 2019) Speak peace to your people Speak peace to your saints Speak peace to your people Speak peace to all the earth Surly his salvation is at hand Unfailing love and truth have met Righteousness will cover all the earth And his glory will fill the land Lord revive your joy in us again And let us hear what you will say Will your anger always be on us Will you not restore us again 3

Behold Our God (Words & Music: Jonathan, Meghan, & Ryan Beird, & Stephen Altrogge 2011) Who has held the oceans in His hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at His voice All creation rises to rejoice Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question any of His words? Who can teach the One who knows all things? Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds? Behold our God, seated on His throne Come, let us adore Him Behold our King, nothing can compare Come, let us adore Him! Who has felt the nails upon His hands Bearing all the guilt of sinful man? God eternal, humbled to the grave Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign! You will reign forever! (4x) 4

Call to Confession: Hebrews 9:27-28 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Prayer of Confession Father, we confess that we seldom think about death and judgment. We often live as if our lives will not end, and when we do consider death, we are tempted to presume upon your grace. In Scripture, you teach us that we gain wisdom when we number our days and that knowing our mortality is a necessary step towards knowing you. Help us to take sin seriously. May it be an overwhelming joy for us to look at the cross of Christ. May we fear standing in judgment apart from him. Lead us to trust in Christ personally and powerfully. Cause us to be a people who eagerly wait for him. Amen. Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 10:12-14 When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Membership Vows: Joe & Patty Stehle Corporate Prayer 5

Song of Renewal During this song we will pass offering bags through the congregation. We ask that our members and regular attendees thoughtfully consider their contribution as an act of worship - a response to God s grace in our lives. Those who are not a regular part of our church are not expected to participate in the offering. O Come To The Altar (Words & Music: Christopher Brown, Mack Brock, Steven Furtick, and Wade Joye 2015) Are you hurting and broken within Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin Jesus is calling Have you come to the end of yourself Do you thirst for a drink from the well Jesus is calling O come to the altar The Father s arms are open wide Forgiveness was bought with The precious blood of Jesus Christ Leave behind your regrets and mistakes Come today there s no reason to wait Jesus is calling Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy From the ashes a new life is born Jesus is calling Oh what a Savior Isn t he wonderful Sing alleluia Christ is risen Bow down before him For he is Lord of all Sing alleluia Christ is risen Bear your cross as you wait for the crown Tell the world of the treasure you ve found Pastoral Prayer At this time, children ages 4-7 are invited to continue their worship at Children s Church. The leaders will bring the children to children s church and then back to the worship service after the sermon. 6

Sermon: James 5:13-20 Wisdom for Life from the Book of James Caring and Praying for One Another - Reverend Matt Koerber Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. Leader This is the Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 7

Notes 8

Additional Scripture Colossians 4:3-4 / At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 1 John 4:11-12 / Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. Creedal Response: Westminster Confession of Faith 26.1 All saints are united to Jesus Christ their Head by his Spirit through faith, and have fellowship with him in his grace, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory. Being united to one another in love, they have communion in each other s gifts and graces, and are obligated to the performance of such public and private duties as support their mutual good, both in the inward and outward person. 9

Songs of Thanksgiving Please stand for the final songs if you are able. Heal Us Emmanuel (Words: William Cowper 1779; Music: Kevin Twit, Lucas Morton 2015) Heal us, Emmanuel, here we are We long to feel Thy touch Deep wounded souls to Thee we fly O Savior hear our cry Our faith is feeble, we confess We faintly trust Thy word But will You pity us the less? Be that far from You Lord! Remember him who once applied With trembling for relief Lord, I believe, with tears he cried O help my unbelief! She, too, who touched you in the press And healing virtue stole Was answered, Daughter, go in peace Thy faith has made you whole. Like her, with hopes and fears we come To touch You if we may O send us not despairing home Send none unhealed away Psalm 24 We Long To See You (Words & Music: Wendell Kimbrough 2015) Almighty God, we long to see you. Open our hearts and make them pure. Spirit, we wash our hands in mercy. Come teach our souls to love your truth. 10
