Psalm -- The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65). Second Reading -- We, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel -- Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]). FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today's readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God's word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Anthony s Faith Formation Corner Preaching the Word of God In an earlier reflection, I have written on the two-fold meaning of the liturgy in the context of Word and Sacrament. I tried to explain how Catholics cannot focus just on the Eucharist (sacrament), so much so that we neglect the scriptures (word of God). The readings for this 15 th Sunday of the year remind us once again of the importance of the word. Isaiah 55 presents a nice analogy: just as rain comes down from heaven and does not return until it makes the land fertile, so the word of the Lord will not return to him void, but will achieve the end for which it was sent. And the Gospel (Matthew 13:1-23) is about sowing the seed of the word I really like the late Jesuit author Walter Burghardt. He was a professor of patristic theology, and a well-known Catholic preacher. Father Burghardt made no secret that preaching the word was of essential importance. I always make a conscientious effort to preach the word of God whether I feel like it or not. Of course, preaching is not easy, as you have a wide audience, and each party has its own preconceived notions and likes to hear its own thing. Also, whatever is heard is more important than what is said. However, people in the pews should also be aware of the preacher s agony in preaching the word of God In his book Preaching: The Art and the Craft, Walter Burghardt points out the fact people do not listen to what he (as a preacher) has to say as much as what God has to say through him. I think this is a very important point: the Spirit inspires not only the preacher, but also those who hear the preacher. Burghardt refers to a story in the Old Testament, from the book of Numbers (ch. 22). When the Israelites were freed from Egypt and crossed the land of the Moabites, Balak, the king of Moab, asked the famous soothsayer Balaam to put a curse on the Israelites. Having been warned by the angel of the Lord, Balaam knew that he could not really curse the chosen people of God. But at the urging of the princes of Moab, he rode on his ass anyway to curse them. The ass would refuse to go on, despite having been struck three times by Balaam s stick. Finally, the poor animal spoke out in anger, rebuking Balaam for having acted against the will of the Lord As the story goes, the Lord opened the mouth of an ass. Now if the Lord was able to speak through an animal, how much more would he be able to speak through his preacher, no matter how poor the preacher may be All in all, the word of God is going to have an effect anyway, for someone and in some manner. The word will not return to the Lord void! El profeta proclama la paz mesiánica como una paz en donde animales voraces como el lobo, el leopardo, el león y la osa habitarán tranquilamente con animales mansos como el cordero, el cabrito, el ternero y la vaca "y un niño pequeño los conducirá". Esta es una paz donde la justicia rectifica las desigualdades y pone fin a la violencia. En esta profecía el Cristo es un niño que pastorea el mundo con una eficacia sorprendente. Él hace lo que los gobernantes del mundo pretenden hacer pero nunca logran, pone fin a la guerra, la pobreza y el hambre. Por esta razón hay muchas imágenes del Niño Jesús como el Santo Niño de Atocha, el Niño Jesús de Praga, el Divino Niño de Bogotá y el Niño Jesús en manos de san Antonio, entre otros. Éstas captan el deseo cristiano de que el niño venga a conducirnos hacia la paz mesiánica y a la vez, nos recuerda que hay que ser como niños para entrar en el reino de Dios. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
