Yesenia Marie Feliciano-Đoàn Gioan Phaolô II, South Plainfield, New Jersey MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS Back when it started Since I started TNTT, many people who have met me would ask how did you know and get involved in TNTT? Well, it is kind of a long story. I graduated from Stockton University in May 2015 and was offered an internship in Savannah, GA. I was to start in September 2015, so I moved to Georgia from New Jersey. While I was settling in, I knew I needed to find a Catholic Church near me to attend mass. I visited one church that the internet suggested and it happens to be an American and Vietnamese parish. There I met my good friend Angie, who helped Cha Son at daily mass. She invited me to join the English choir because they needed more singers and I was happy to join. I loved singing for the Lord and I wanted to still be involved in Mass to help grow my faith in God. Pope s Intentions Pray that people who are involved in the service and transmission of faith, may find, in their dialogue with culture, a language suited to the conditions of the present time. Cầu xin cho những người tham gia phục vụ và truyền bá đức tin, có thể thấy, trong cuộc đối thoại với văn hóa, một ngôn ngữ phù hợp với điều kiện hiện tại. When I joined the parish, I was involved in the English Choir and I met a HT named Kim Oanh who was the director of the choir. After some time being in the choir I became friends with Kim Oanh and one day she invited me to come to a TNTT event that was being hosted by the Đoàn in Savannah, GA. When I came to the event I was not sure what to expect but at the event, it was an amazing experience to witness. I believe it was Cấp 1 training camp and I remember being impressed by the amount of energy and faith everyone there had. The way everyone was learning about scripture, living their faith as Catholic Christians, praising our Lord
MĐB MANA Issue 105 2 with music and dance, and sharing with each other what they feel about God calling them into becoming a youth leader. Seeing all of this made me interested in TNTT, but at first I thought I could not join because I was not Vietnamese, however my friend Kim Oanh told me I can if I want to. So when I asked the Đoàn Tru ơ ng in Savannah about joining TNTT, I was amazed to see how welcoming they were. Starting around December or January, I started to join TNTT and a few months later I attended Cấp 1. At Cấp 1, I learned so much about how to become a youth leader, work as a team with other HT, learned a lot more prayers and songs in Vietnamese and it helped me want to grow in my faith in Jesus. A lot of it reminded me to keep my focus on God, to have love in my heart and to help others know Christ especially the youth. That is our call as HT: to Know, to Love, and to Serve God. I was very happy and blessed to get a lot of support from my brothers and sisters in Christ in TNTT. I was promoted to a HT in January 2017 at DHHT Miền Đông Nam in Atlanta, GA. I was nervous because I was shocked it was going to happen and did not want to mess up at the ceremony but a part of me was feeling very blessed with the new journey I was about to take to serve God as a Youth Leader in TNTT. I knew there was a lot of things I still need to learn but I wanted to learn and do my best to help others become closer to God, to Jesus where there is true love and happiness. The move to NJ During the end of November of 2016, I received news that I needed to come back to New Jersey because of a family emergency.at that time, I was living in Orlando, FL and attended TNTT there. When I moved back to New Jersey, it was hard for me to be involved in TNTT because I did not know where the closet Doan was. Amazingly, God was there for me Shout Outs Thank you to all the Đoàns that took part in this year's National Spiritual Bouquet campaign! MĐB was ranked at the very top for participation! MĐB MANA Issue 105 3 and a HT from Đoàn Fatima contacted me and invited me to come visit their Đoàn in Philadelphia. Luckily it was just an hour and half drive from my home in New Jersey. It is amazing how God works because I was able to still be involved with TNTT even though I was far from the closest Đoàn to me at that time. For a year I was helping Đoàn Fatima at least once a month because of the drive and my car being so old. However, God made it possible for me to still attend when I can. Than one day, I visited a parish in South Plainfield, New Jersey for their Vietnamese mass. That one day at the mass the announcement mentioned about TNTT in the parish and I was very shock to hear there was going to be TNTT in New Jersey. So I talked to one of the parishioner and she had me talk to Sơ Maria Goretti Duyên. After I had the chance to talked with Sơ Maria Goretti Duyên, I was very excited to hear there would be TNTT in New Jersey and close to home! When I had the chance to speak to the Đoàn Tru ơ ng at Đoàn Fatima she was very supported in me wanted to switch to help with the new Đoàn in New Jersey which is where I am serving in the present moment. My experience as a HT, being Hispanic, and learning about the Vietnamese culture and language At the beginning it was a bit challenging learning a new language and culture but I began to have a love and appreciation for the Vietnamese culture and language. At times it would remind me of my own Hispanic culture and at times I see the difference between the two. The differences between the cultures and it being a new culture to me did not bother me at all. It was not something I put too much of my focus on when I joined TNTT. The main thing I kept my eye on was God and the love we have for him. I rather focus on what we had in common which was: 1) We are all children of God. 2) The love we have for Jesus, for our families and each other. 3) The appreciation we have for each other differences and viewing it as a blessing. In addition, I am blessed to have a lot of brother and sister of Christ in TNTT who have and still help me learn Vietnamese with the prayers, songs and things I ask on how to say something or the meaning of some things in conversations. The support I get is amazing and I am happy and grateful of the help I receive. I will say it is difficult learning a new language but it is something that is worth doing. TNTT has help me learn and love the Vietnamese culture and language but also inspired me to learn more and love about my own culture as a Puerto Rican from seeing how all the HT have this love and care for their home land Vietnam. Witnessing this makes me want to visit Vietnam one day but also appreciate and have a love for the beautiful culture and people. It is also amazing that other HT have asked me to teach them a little Spanish while they help me with my Vietnamese, it s awesome because not only do I learn but I can also share things I do know as well. MĐB MANA Issue 105 4 One day I went to buy new sneakers for TNTT and I was speaking to someone who works at Payless Shoes. I had told her the struggle I go through on buying shoes and how my feet are too small for average woman shoes. At times I feel embarrass shopping at the kids section because that is how small my feet are. The woman at the store told me to never be embarrassed about that, she had said that my height and feet and every part of my is a gift from God and to embarrass and thank God for that gift even if it is different compared to everyone else. Thinking about it now as I am writing this, it is the same as being a HT and in TNTT. We are all different in some way but those differences is what makes us unique and a gift from God. All of us have gifts to do different things in TNTT such as teaching, while others may have the gift to do games or administration. Although I am different, I want to be able to use my gifts to serve God wherever He calls me and the day I was invited to a TNTT event, it felt that God was calling me to serve Him here. Ever since I started, I began to grow in my faith and love for Jesus. I wanted to grow closer to Him, and to learn more about God s love for me and what I need to work on to become closer to Him. TNTT has been a huge blessing for me because I was given a chance to grow in love with God again and to serve Him by helping the youth. When I started to follow Jesus at 16/17 years old, after a very bad break up and problems with school and family, I was able to go to God with the help of my Confirmation Teacher and an old Youth group I was in at that age. Through them I found Jesus and I wanted to know true love from Him because I knew at that time that was where I would find the true love I needed. Since then I wanted to give back of what others were able to do for me, I wanted to help others especially the youth to come back to God and know his true love for them. As a HT, we have a lot of responsibilities and for me it is all worth it the good times and the struggles when we do it with love. It is that love that brings us closer to God the Father, to Jesus, and to each other. Being in TNTT has given me the chance to serve God but to also grow in my faith. During my difficult moments in my life, those who were there for me and who prayed for me was the family I made through Christ from the parishes I attended and in TNTT. In addition to the prayer, when I meet other HT who want to grow in their faith as well and share their love for God it gives me inspiration and hope for me to grow in knowledge and faith.
