Melchizedek The nme Melchizedek mens My king is righteous or possibly King of Righteousness, though some rgue tht it mens My king is Zedek, with Zedek being god thought to hve been worshiped by Cnnites living in pre-monrchic Jeruslem. Melchizedek is mysterious chrcter in the Bible, known in Genesis s the King of Slem lmost certinly Jeruslem nd priest of God Most High, or el elyōn. Divine nmes pper frequently nd in multiple forms in Genesis, nd probbly with some overlp. In the Cnnite pntheon, the chief God ws clled El, nd sometimes Elyon. Mny scholrs think nmes for this god nd Isrel s god Yhweh becme conflted in lter trditions. Moses spoke of Elyon clling out Isrel from other peoples (Deut. 32:8), nd pslmists prised El Elyon (Ps. 57:21, 78:35), without specificlly identifying Elyon with Yhweh. At lest one reference did equte the two nmes: pslm credited to Dvid nd found in 2 Smuel 2:24 declres The LORD (Yhweh) thundered from heven; the Most High (Elyon) uttered his voice. Melchizedek ppers only once more in the Old Testment, where Pslm 110:4 refers to Judh s king s priest forever ccording to the order of Melchizedek. Assuming this referred to Dvid nd his descendnts, the writer of Hebrews referred to Jesus in the sme fshion (Hebrews 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:1, 10, 11, 15, 17, 21). The ppernce of Melchizedek remins mystery, though some think it ws postexilic insertion, designed to support the reception of tithes in Jeruslem during the Second Temple period. Speking in visions Genesis consists of severl literry sources tht hve been combined (see The Hrdest Question, below, for more). Much of Genesis 15 comes from the E, or Elohist source, including v. 1. The Elohist is more likely to portry God s speking in visions, rther thn directly, s in J (the Yhwist ). Verse 1 introduces vision in which the word of the LORD cme to Abrm. Tht phrse, which is common in prophetic literture, ppers only here nd in v. 4 within the Pentteuch. Fith nd righteousness Abrhm s show of fith is reflected in Pslm 106:31, nd ppers severl times in the New Testment. Pul bsed his rgument in Romns 4 on the understnding tht God s covennt with Abrhm ws bsed on promise, nd ll Abrhm hd to do ws believe it (Rom. 4:3-6, 9, 11, 20-25). The quottion lso ppers in Gl. 3:6-14, Jmes 2:23, nd Hebrews 11:8. 4 Nurturing Fith Mrch 17, 2019

The Hrdest Question by Tony Crtlege Who wrote this story? The Hrdest Question is designed to support The Bible Lesson by Tony Crtlege, printed in Nurturing Fith Journl. You cn subscribe to either the digitl or print edition of Nurturing Fith Journl to ccess the lessons. Plese lso ensure tht ech person in your clss hs copy of Nurturing Fith Journl so they cn prepre before the lesson. An old Jewish nd Christin trdition held tht Moses ws the uthor of the Pentteuch, but questions were rised even in ntiquity, nd scholrship during the pst 200 yers or so hs demonstrted clerly tht Moses could not hve written the books of the Torh, though he shres the stge with God s the min chrcter from Exodus through Deuteronomy. Creful nlysis hs shown tht multiple sources contributed to the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy. These sources cn be identified, in mny cses, by vriety of linguistic cues such s their preferred nme for God, how they describe the inhbitnts of Cnn (i.e., Cnnites or Amorites), whether they refer to the mountin where the covennt ws mde s Sini or Horeb, or by their view of God s immedite or distnt. Sometimes texts, such s Gen. 15:5-18, pprently preserve elements of t lest two trditions, typiclly clled J (for Yhwist [Germn scholrs spell Yhweh s Jhveh ]) nd E (Elohist). The Yhwist source is probbly the oldest source, originting in Judh, perhps during the time of Dvid or shortly therefter. J refers to Isrel s God s Yhweh nd pictures God in nthropomorphic wys, closely involved in humn ffirs. The literry style of the Yhwist is s simple nd colloquil s it is rtful. The Elohist ppers to hve written bout century lter. He ws probbly priest living in northern Isrel, s he shows preference for plce nmes nd lnguge more common there. The E source uses the term Elohim s its primry nme for God, nd portrys the deity s being more distnt. After the northern kingdom ws conquered by the Assyrins in 722 BCE, mny Isrelites fled south to Judh, nd priests pprently brought their writings with them. At some point, J nd E were combined, more smoothly in some plces thn others. Genesis 15 ppers to contin interwoven strnds of mteril from J nd E. In ddition, the text contins wht ppers to be lter interpoltion: vv. 13-16 seem out of plce nd re commonly regrded s lter insertion designed to indicte tht God hd predicted the 400-yer exile in Egypt to Abrhm. While God could certinly hve mde such prediction, there would be little reson for it. The intrusive nture of the text suggests tht it ws dded by lter uthor with his own gend. 6 Nurturing Fith Mrch 17, 2019
