Commander s Guide A COMMANDER S GUIDE IN TRAINING TODAY S CHAYOLIM Introduction to get a closer look. Shimmy held his mother s hand tightly as they rode the subway to his dentist appointment. Wow! There were so many different people riding on his train car, each with their own story. There was a lady with a baby in a carriage, another two men in business suits occupied with their cell phones, some teenagers with backpacks on the way to school, and then wait! Was that Mendel from his class? It looked like him a lot, but he couldn t see any tzitzis and his yarmulka was covered by a baseball cap. Was it Mendel? Were his eyes playing tricks on him? Shimmy moved a bit closer Mendel? he called out unsure of himself. Mendel looked startled as he glanced up, Oh, hi Shimmy! What are you doing here? I m going to the dentist with my mother, but, mendel, where are your tzitzis?! Mendel blushed and mumbled, They re tucked into my pants. I don t like when they hang out obviously when I m not in school or Crown Heights. Shimmy looked at Mendel and smiled. The parsha he just learned deals with this exactly. He could help Mendel learn how to conquer his Yetzer Hora! שמות, כ''א, א' ו א ל ה ה מ ש פ ט ים א ש ר ת ש ים ל פ נ יה ם And these are the laws that you should place before them. Rashi explains :what it means to place before them Place it before them, like a table that is set with food prepared on it, ready.for a person to eat immediately Torah The Rebbe explains that the mishpotim, the Halachos in the Torah, are directly connected with the soldiers in Tzivos Hashem. The mishpotim need to be ready and prepared like a set table of food ready to be eaten. When a person eats, he gets energy for the day and is strengthened. So too, the Torah needs to be prepared and 2
set in a way that when a chayol in Tzivos Hashem learns it and absorbs the ruchniyus, he becomes a strong soldier and gets the nutrients to fight the Yetzer Hora. When a chayol learns something in the parsha, he needs to immediately apply it and use it as ammunition to make him strong and fight the Yetzer Hora. When a chayol receives an instruction from Hashem in the Torah on how to think, speak, or behave, he takes it immediately, like a ready-to-eat sandwich, and puts it in to action. Immediately, he already behaves differently, and it s clear to him and to all those around him, that he is a chayol in the army of Hashem. Whenever someone sees a Yidishe boy or girl, they should clearly know in one second, that this is someone who is following Hashem s Torah. When you see a boy and you ask him who he is, he can immediately show his tzitzis and proudly exclaim that he is a Yid. When you ask a girl who she is, she right away can say Shema Yisroel by heart and proudly declares her loyalty to Hashem and to his Torah and mitzvos. She knows it by heart and says it with a chayus so that all who are near and far can clearly spot her and know that she is a soldier in Hashem s army. Whenever we learn something in school, we right away need to take it to heart and see how it can change how we live. When we learn about the importance of brochos, the very next time we eat something we say a brocha loud and clear and with a lot of kavana. When we march down the street, we wear our chassidisher uniforms and tzniusdike clothing with pride and joy. We demonstrate that we are Hashem s kinder! Look at us! Lesson B chein Mendel opened his eyes brightly and quickly snatched his tzitzis out of his pockets. Look, Shimmy! I am a soldier and I am proud! I want everyone on the subway and everyone in the whole entire world to know that I am on a mission and I am not going to let my Yetzer Hora make me hide it anymore! Shimmy smiled a great big smile and took out a small booklet from his pocket. Mendel? Want to review some Mishnayos that we learned? We can purify the air around us and prepare the world for Moshiach! 3
English Sicha PLACED BEFORE THEM LIKE A SET TABLE them.-" And these are the laws you shall place before ו א ל ה ה מ ש פ ט ים א ש ר ת ש ים ל פ נ יה ם" This is the first posuk of parshas Mishpatim. Rashi explains this posuk, and its explanation applies in every generation. All the laws of the Torah, its lessons and teachings, must be prepared for Yidden so they can use them right away. They must be as clear and as ready to use as a meal that is set on the table, waiting to be eaten. Just as the food on the table makes the body strong, so does the Torah, our spiritual food, strengthen the neshoma. It gives special strength and health to the neshamos of Hashem s soldiers, who have an important mission from Hashem to fight Hashem s battle against the Yetzer Hora. This posuk has a special lesson for Jewish children. When a soldier is charged with the mission from Hashem to battle the Yetzer Hora, then he must do so in a way that makes it clear that he is a Jewish child. If anyone asks a Jewish boy or a Jewish girl, Who are you? they answer immediately, We are Jewish children, and we belong to Hashem s army. If people then ask, How will we know clearly, without any doubt, that you belong to Hashem s army? the boy or girl can clearly show, as clear as day, that they belong to Tzivos Hashem. He takes out his tzitzis right away, and the girl demonstrates that she s a proud Jewish girl by dressing in a tzniusdikeh way. Yiddishe children demonstrate that they are Jews in another way. They proclaim by heart, without needing to look in a siddur, Shema Yisroel Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echod. And they say the words with enthusiasm and lebedikeit, showing that they are living by these words. If someone asks Jewish children, What makes you sure that you can win the battle against the Yetzer Hora? they answer quickly, by heart, Bereishis boro Elokim es hashomayim v es haoretz. From the very beginning, from the first day and the first moment, it was Hashem who created the heavens and the earth, and everything found within them. The Yetzer Hora tries to deny the fact that Hashem is the master and ruler of the heavens and the earth, but the Jewish boy and girl go forth to fight the Yetzer Hora and declare with confidence Hashem is the one and only master of the heavens and the earth, and everything in them. 4
