Student Workbook for Shabbos night

Shabbos - Meeting the Divine 1 Why is Shabbos the only mitzvah that is personified as if it were a living being? 2 When we speak about Shabbos coming or going and greeting Shabbos, what are we speaking about? 3 We speak about Shabbos this way in order that we humans can Give life to Shabbos. Understand the majesty of this holy day. Be similar to the celestial angels. 4 The reason why we don t speak about greeting other mitzvos, is because other mitzvos. Whereas Shabbos is. 5 List three ways that Shabbos parallels receiving Hashem s presence at Har Sinai. Receive Shabbos Receive Hashem s Presence at Har Sinai 2

6 What are two reasons that we do not feel Hashem s presence when Shabbos arrives? 7 According to Maimonides, one should take pause and wait for the arrival of Shabbos as one would await the arrival of a King. Messenger. Parent. 8 Why would the righteous people of earlier generations have all their Shabbos preparations completed by midday on Erev Shabbos? 9 What is the relationship between the level of sanctity that we experience on Shabbos and our preparations for Shabbos? 10 What is the secret to having ample time to greet Shabbos? 3

11 What three things could you do to make the atmosphere in your home one of warmth and serenity? 12 Why does the Talmud mention that the story of Hillel took place on Erev Shabbos? Preparing for Shabbos 1 To prepare for Shabbos, all the rooms of the house should be cleaned as if was visiting. 2 The custom of having flowers on Shabbos is mentioned in the Midrash, which compares the rose that is set aside for Shabbos and Yom Tov to The Shabbos food which is set aside for Shabbos and Yom Tov. The Jewish people which are prepared for their final redemption. The Shabbos tefillos which bring great recognition of Hashem. 4

3 What are two the reasons given for having flowers for Shabbos? 4 Why should the table be covered with a tablecloth the entire Shabbos? 5 Why is it best to do the Shabbos preparations yourself? 6 What is the reason a person should have special foods or treats that they enjoy on Shabbos? 7 What should a person who does not have enough time to bathe their body minimally do for Shabbos? 8 A person s clothing for Shabbos should be: (Check all that apply.) Freshly cleaned Better than weekday Totally changed; including undergarments and shoes The same as weekday, just freshly cleaned 5

9 All money that a person will have throughout the year is determined on Rosh Hashana. He will not have more or less money than this throughout the year. What are two exceptions? 10 What will happen to money spent on these two things? Candle lighting 1 Both men and women are obligated to light Shabbos candles. What is the reason that traditionally women fulfill this role? 2 What is the reason behind the custom to give tzedakah right before lighting Shabbos candles? We give tzedakah before performing any mitzvah, candle lighting included. It is a special mitzvah to give tzedakah right before Shabbos. In the merit of tzedakah our prayers are more readily accepted. 3 What is the reason that before a woman lights Shabbos candles, she should be careful to have finished all melacha or work? 6

4 It is important to honor the mitzvah of candle lighting by being dressed in Shabbos clothes. However, what should be done if it is late? Explain your reasoning. 5 What do our rabbis tell us a woman who cherishes and beautifies the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candle will merit? 6 Why is candle lighting time an auspicious time to daven? 7 Why is the bracha recited after the candles are lit? 8 In Judaism what do lit candles represent? 9 Just as candles light up the, so too, our role as Jews is to bring into the darkness of the world and Godliness into every of the world. light corner darkness shine 7

Where to Light 1 How does the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles honor Shabbos? 2 How does the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles bring enjoyment of Shabbos? 3 How does the mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles bring shalom bayis? 4 According to the reason that we are lighting to honor Shabbos where should the candles be lit? 5 According to the reason that we are lighting for enjoyment of Shabbos where should the candles be lit? 8

6 According to the reason that lighting candles is for the sake of shalom bayis, how should each room of the house be prepared for Shabbos? 7 What is the halacha regarding rooms that won t be used on Shabbos? Blessing Children 1 Why is the custom of blessing children particularly fitting for Shabbos? Shabbos is a time of peace and freedom from worldly distractions and it is a time when parents have the peace of mind to bless their children with a whole heart and concentration. Shabbos is a time that blessings are more readily accepted, therefore it is fitting to give blessings then. Shabbos is a time when both parents and children are home and eating together, therefore it is a convenient time to bless. 2 When parents stop to bless their children they stop and appreciate... 3 When parents stop to bless their children it reminds the children... 9

4 According to Kabbalistic sources, why does this blessing take place on Friday night? 5 What are origins of the brachos recited? 6 Match each pasuk with its meaning: May Hashem grace you with wisdom and understanding of His Torah. י ב ר כ ך ה ו י ש מ ר ך : May Hashem bless you with material wealth and protect you from misfortunes that would not allow you to enjoy it י א ר ה פ נ יו א ל יך ו יח נ ך : May Hashem shine his face to you when you pray to Him and give you peace. י ש א ה פ נ יו א ל יך ו י ש ם ל ך ש לו ם: 10

7 When blessing sons, why are Ephraim and Menashe specifically mentioned? Ephraim and Menashe got along well together and we pray that our children get along peacefully with one another. Ephraim and Menashe were twins, and twins are the closest of all brothers, so we pray our children should be like them. Ephraim and Menashe never visited Eretz Yisrael and we pray that even if our children have not visited Eretz Yisrael that they should love the land. 8 When blessing daughters why are the matriarchs; Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah mentioned? Kiddush 1 ז כו ר א ת יו ם ה ש ב ת ל ק ד ש ו What do we learn from the words of the Torah meaning to remember the Shabbos and to make it holy? 2 Our rabbis established that whenever we preform a ritual that relates to holiness of the Jewish people we include a כ ו ס ש ל ב ר כ ה or cup of blessing. :כ ו ס ש ל ב ר כ ה Name four rituals that have a 11

3 כ ו ס ש ל ב ר כ ה According to the Vilna Gaon, why did the rabbis say this should be a cup of wine? 4 In which hand should the kiddush cup be held? 5 Draw how the kiddush cup is to be held: 6 What is the halacha if kiddush is made while the cup is not held, but rather resting on the table? 7 How much wine should the person making kiddush drink? 12

8 Why was this amount designated? 9 Kiddush should be followed by a Challah - Meaning 1 What does the lechem mishnah that we have each Shabbos commemorate? 2 What did Friday s double portion of manna teach the Jewish people about Shabbos? 3 List 3 or more miracles that occurred daily with the manna: 13

4 What do we declare when we take the lechem mishnah to make the blessing? Challah - Laws 1 What does covering the challahs from both above and below commemorate? 2 How does covering the challah prevent it from being embarrassed? The challah knows that it is lower than wine, as wine grows from grapevines that grow higher up. Therefore the challah would be embarrassed to see that the wine went first. When making a blessing on both bread and wine, the order of brachos should really be that the bread should come first, however when making kiddush it not possible, so we cover the challah in order not to embarrass it. If the challah is uncovered it feels exposed sitting on the table and waiting its turn. 3 A third reason to cover the challahs is so it should be recognizable that... 14

4 How can one tell if a broken or weak challah is considered whole? 5 What is the reason behind the halacha that a slight cut should be made with a knife in the challah before reciting the bracha? 6 What does holding the challah with all 10 fingers, while reciting the blessing, represent? The 10 mitzvos involved in making the challah The 10 ccommandments The 10 ten words of the blessing 7 At what point during the blessing should the challahs be raised slightly? 8 On Friday night, why is the bottom challah held closer to the person making the blessing? 9 What does dipping the challah in salt commemorate? 15
