For local candle lighting times visit www.chabad.org/candles WEDNESDAY NIGHT, 22 TISHREI 5778 SHEMINI ATZERES THINGS TO DO On Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah we display more simchah than on the rest of Yom Tov, even more than during simchas beis hasho eivah. 1 Treasure the forty-eight hours of Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, said the Frierdiker Rebbe in the name of the Rebbe Rashab. Every second, you can draw buckets and barrels of material and spiritual riches. How so? Through dancing! (quoted in Sefer Haminhagim, p. 68) On Shemini Atzeres, eat and drink in the sukkah, 2 but don t say Leisheiv Basukkah. 3 Those who are mehader refrain even from drinking water outside the sukkah. 4 Maariv Maariv begins with Shir Hamaalos. Say the Shemoneh Esrei for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shemini Atzeres where indicated. 5 After Shemoneh Esrei, the chazzan says Kaddish Shalem. Do not say Aleinu it will be said later, after hakafos.

Hakafos Make Kiddush in the sukkah and farbreng in preparation for hakafos. 6 Say the Kiddush for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the addition for Shemini Atzeres where indicated. Say Shehecheyanu as well. Atah Har eisa is said three times. 7 Various individuals are honored with saying the pesukim, to be followed by the congregation. After each Atah Har eisa, say the paragraph Av harachamim. It is customary to then honor someone to say the possuk Vehayah zar acha. 8 The aron kodesh is then opened, and all the Sifrei Torah are removed. 9 Various individuals are honored with holding the Sifrei Torah. The people holding the Sifrei Torah circle the bimah (counterclockwise), accompanied by the rest of the congregation. As they circle, the leader says the paragraph Ana Hashem hoshiah na, one stanza at a time, followed by the congregation. Afterwards, say the pesukim printed after the paragraph. We then dance and sing with the Sifrei Torah, 10 until the gabbai announces, Ad kan hakafah alef! The Sifrei Torah are then returned to the aron kodesh. This procedure is repeated seven times, for each of the seven hakafos. At the end of the hakafos the Sifrei Torah are returned to the aron kodesh, and we say Aleinu. Yom Tov meals On Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, the challah is not dipped into honey. 11 When bentching after the Yom Tov meals (on both Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah), say Yaaleh Viyavo, inserting the words beyom shemini atzeres hachag hazeh, beyom tov mikra kodesh hazeh. Additionally, say the Harachaman for Yom Tov (but not the Harachaman for Sukkos 12 ).

THURSDAY, 22 TISHREI, 5778 SHEMINI ATZERES THINGS TO DO Shacharis Say the Shemoneh Esrei for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shemini Atzeres where indicated. This is followed by the complete Hallel, Kaddish Shalem, Shir Shel Yom, and krias hatorah. Krias hatorah When the aron kodesh is opened, say Vayehi Binsoa Ha aron, the Yud-Gimel Midos Harachamim (once), the Ribono Shel Olam for Shalosh Regalim (inserting, where indicated, your name,,בנותי and/or,אשתי, ב נ י, ב נ י, בתי your mother s name, and the words as appropriate), and Berich Shemei. Two Sifrei Torah are removed from the aron kodesh. From the first Sefer Torah, five aliyos are read in the kriah of Aser Te aser (Re eih 14:22 16:17). The second Sefer Torah is then placed next to the first one, and Chatzi Kaddish is recited. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the first Sefer Torah. From the second Sefer Torah, Bayom hashemini is read for Maftir (Pinchas 29:35 30:1). This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the second Sefer Torah, after which the haftorah is read (I Melachim 8:54 66). Krias hatorah is followed by Yizkor. Those whose parents are alive leave the shul during Yizkor. During the first year of mourning, the mourner stays in shul but does not recite Yizkor. 13 This is followed by Av Harachamim and Ashrei (both are said by all the congregants 14 ). The Sefer Torah is returned to the aron kodesh, the chazzan says Chatzi Kaddish, and we daven Musaf. Musaf Before beginning Musaf, the gabbai announces, Mashiv haruach u morid hageshem! From now on, replace Morid hatal with Mashiv haruach u morid hageshem.

See below, Hosafos, for more on morid hageshem, and for the halachah that applies if you forgot to say it. Say the Musaf for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shemini Atzeres where appropriate. Chazaras hashatz begins with tefillas geshem, and concludes with duchening. Kiddush Say Askinu, Eileh Moadei, and Borei Peri Hagafen. Shnayim mikra Say shnayim mikra today for Parshas Vezos Haberachah. Minchah Minchah begins with Ashrei and Uva Letzion. Say the Shemoneh Esrei for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shemini Atzeres where appropriate. (Don t forget to say Mashiv haruach u morid hageshem.) This is followed by Aleinu. Towards evening, enter the sukkah and eat or drink something to bid farewell to the sukkah. 15 Tahaluchah We visit other shuls and join their hakafos, with the goal of increasing the simchas Yom Tov of the congregants. 16 Tahaluchah is my shlichus! (Sichah of 2 Sivan, 5728). With every step on tahaluchah, another angel is created (Sichah of Shavuos, 5728). THURSDAY NIGHT, 23 TISHREI, 5778 SIMCHAS TORAH THINGS TO DO Women and girls light candles from an existing flame, saying the berachos of Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu.

Maariv is the same as yesterday. Tonight and tomorrow as well, insert the additions for Shemini Atzeres where indicated (in Shemoneh Esrei, Kiddush, and Yaaleh Viyavo). Maariv is followed by Kiddush (indoors), a farbrengen, 17 and hakafos, 18 as yesterday. This is followed by the Yom Tov meal. One year on Simchas Torah night, it was suggested that one individual make Kiddush and be motzi everyone else. The Frierdiker Rebbe replied: The Shehecheyanu we say on Simchas Torah is for the Torah. With the Torah you can t be motzi someone else; halevay we should fulfill our own obligation! (Sefer Hasichos 5704, p. 32) FRIDAY, 23 TISHREI, 5778 SIMCHAS TORAH THINGS TO DO Shacharis Say the Shemoneh Esrei for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shemini Atzeres where indicated. The Kohanim duchen by chazaras hashatz. 19 This is followed by the complete Hallel, Kaddish Shalem, and Shir Shel Yom. Hakafos Make Kiddush (as yesterday) and farbreng in preparation for hakafos. Atah Har eisa is said three times, as during the night. The aron kodesh is then opened, and all the Sifrei Torah are removed. Various individuals are honored with holding the Sifrei Torah. The individuals holding the Sifrei Torah circle the bimah, followed by the rest of the congregation. The bimah is circled three and a half times in succession. During each half circuit, the leading individual leads the congregation in saying one of the seven hakafos, completing the last paragraph as they finish the final half circuit. 20

We then dance and sing with the Sifrei Torah. After hakafos, the Sifrei Torah are returned to the aron kodesh. Krias hatorah The aron kodesh is then opened a second time, for krias hatorah. When the aron kodesh is opened, say Vayehi Binsoa Ha aron, the Yud-Gimel Midos Harachamim, the Ribono Shel Olam for Shalosh Regalim, and Berich Shemei, as yesterday. Three Sifrei Torah are removed from the aron kodesh. From the first Sefer Torah, six aliyos are read in Parshas Vezos Haberachah. It is customary for everyone to receive an aliyah. To this end, after the first five aliyos have been read, they can be repeated as necessary. Additionally (or alternatively, many people can be called up to each aliyah. 21 When many people receive a single aliyah, they say the berachos out loud together. 22 For the fifth aliyah, all the boys are called up to the Torah, joined by an adult. 23 The sixth aliyah is given to the Chassan Torah. Before he is called up, the first nusach of Meireshus is read. It is customary to stand when the last possuk of the Torah is read. After the baal korei finishes reading the last possuk, the entire congregation says aloud, Chazak chazak venischazek! This is then repeated by the baal korei. (The Chassan Torah says these words as well. 24 ) The second Sefer Torah is then placed next to the first one, and hagbah and gelilah is done with the first Sefer Torah. From the second Sefer Torah, one aliyah is read in Parshas Bereishis, received by the Chassan Bereishis. Before he is called up, the second nusach of Meireshus is read. At the end of each day of Creation, the congregation says vayehi erev aloud, followed by the baal korei. At the end of the sixth day, we say vayehi erev and continue with Vayechulu (until the end of the aliyah), and the baal korei follows suit. 25 The third Sefer Torah is then placed next to the second one, and Chatzi Kaddish is recited. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the second Sefer Torah.

From the third Sefer Torah, Bayom hashemini is read for Maftir (Pinchas 29:35 30:1). This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the third Sefer Torah, after which the haftorah is read (Yehoshua 1:1 18). Next, say the paragraphs Sisu vesimchu, Hiskabtzu, etc. (printed in the siddur after hakafos). This is followed by Ashrei. The Sefer Torah is returned to the aron kodesh, the chazzan says Chatzi Kaddish, and we daven Musaf as yesterday (but without duchening). The rest of the day For Chitas, learn the last two aliyos of Parshas Vezos Haberachah and the first six aliyos of Parshas Bereishis. 26 The fifth aliyah ends with the words ואחות תובל קין נעמה (4:22), and the sixth aliyah ends.(5:24) כי לקח אותו אלקים with the words Say shnayim mikra today for Parshas Bereishis. If you did not yet finish shnayim mikra for Parshas Vezos Haberachah, it can be finished until tonight. 27 All Shabbos preparations must be completed early enough that they could theoretically be enjoyed before shekiah. 28 The cholent should similarly be completely cooked before Shabbos. 29 Women and girls light candles eighteen minutes before shekiah from an existing flame, saying the berachah of Lehadlik Ner Shel Shabbos Kodesh. Before Minchah, say Pasach Eliyahu but omit Hodu. SHABBOS, 24 TISHREI, 5778 PARSHAS BEREISHIS, SHABBOS MEVARCHIM THINGS TO DO The way you set yourself up on Shabbos Bereishis is the way your entire year will be (Likkutei Sichos vol. 20, p. 556 30 ) The Rebbe would say Kaddish on 24 Tishrei, commemorating the yahrzeits of his grandmother, Rebbetzin Rochel (Rebbetzin Chanah s mother), and his brother, Reb DovBer hy d. 31

Friday night Kabbalas Shabbos begins with Mizmor Ledovid. It is customary to use the challah designated for eiruv tavshilin as one of the two challos for lechem mishneh during both the night and day meals, and to eat it during seudah shelishis. 32 (According to our custom that we do not wash for seudah shelishis, it can be eaten during the daytime meal.) Tehillim Early in the morning we gather in shul to recite the entire Tehillim with a minyan. Following Tehillim, a maamar (that can be understood by everyone) should be studied for around an hour, followed by davening. 33 Make sure to study a parshah of Chumash with Rashi every day, to say Tehillim every day, and to complete the Tehillim on Shabbos Mevarchim. It is crucial for you, your children, and your grandchildren (Hayom Yom, 25 Shevat). For more on saying Tehillim on Shabbos Mevarchim, see below, Hosafos. Krias hatorah The fifth aliyah ends with the words ואחות תובל קין נעמה (4:22), and (5:24). 34 כי לקח אותו אלקים the sixth aliyah ends with the words Today s haftorah ends with the words יגדיל תורה ויאדיר (Yeshayahu 42:21). 35 Blessing the new month The takanah to recite Tehillim on Shabbos Mevarchim is not only relevant to those who follow our nusach. Ahavas Yisrael demands that we should try to have it instituted in every shul, no matter the nusach it follows (Igros Kodesh of the Frierdiker Rebbe vol. 2, pp. 523-524). It is proper to know when the molad will be before blessing the new month. 36 This month, the molad will be on Friday afternoon at 12:12 and 17 chalakim. 37 The chazzan stands, 38 holding a Sefer Torah, 39 and leads the congregation with Mi shebeirach. It is customary for the congregants to stand as well. 40

Rosh Chodesh Marcheshvan 41 will fall out on Friday and Shabbos Kodesh. We don t say Av Harachamim. Farbrengens Shabbos Mevarchim is a day to farbreng, ideally in shul. 42 For more on Shabbos Mevarchim farbrengens, see below, Hosafos. Minchah We don t say Tzidkas cha. Motzoei Shabbos We announce, VeYaakov halach ledarko! 43 SUNDAY, 25 TISHREI, 5778 THINGS TO DO We continue to omit Tachanun, until after Rosh Chodesh. When taking down your sukkah, do not step on the sechach or use it for something derogatory. 44 THURSDAY, 29 TISHREI, 5778 THINGS TO DO On erev Rosh Chodesh (known as Yom Kippur Katan), give extra tzedakah 45 and increase in davening and learning. 46 Say Yaaleh Viyavo during Maariv tonight. See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo.

FRIDAY, 30 TISHREI, 5778 ROSH CHODESH MARCHESHVAN THINGS TO DO Say Yaaleh Viyavo in Shemoneh Esrei. See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo. After Shemoneh Esrei, Half Hallel is recited, followed by Kaddish Shalem. For more on Hallel, see below, Hosafos. Hallel is followed by Shir Shel Yom and Barchi Nafshi. This is followed by krias hatorah. Next, say Ashrei and Uva Letzion. The chazzan concludes Uva Letzion quietly, and the Sefer Torah is returned to the aron kodesh. Next, remove Rashi s tefillin, don Rabbeinu Tam s tefillin, and say Shema, Kadesh li chol bechor, and the Sheish Zechiros. After removing Rabbeinu Tam s tefillin, we daven Musaf. The chazzan should recite a chapter of Tehillim before saying the Chatzi Kaddish that precedes Musaf. 47 If you are wearing tefillin when the minyan reaches Kesser, cover the shel rosh when responding. 48 Bentching It is a mitzvah to increase in today s meal in honor of Rosh Chodesh. 49 However, since it is Erev Shabbos, such meals should be eaten before the beginning of the tenth halachic hour of the day (i.e., over three shaos zmaniyos before shekiah). 50 Say Yaaleh Viyavo and the Harachaman for Rosh Chodesh. מגדיל ישועות (in the possuk מגדיל Additionally, replace the word.מגדול with (מלכו See below, Hosafos, for more on bentching and for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo. When saying a Berachah Acharonah Mei ein Shalosh (e.g., Al Hamichyah), add the addition for Rosh Chodesh. (However, there is no need to repeat the berachah if it was omitted.) 51

Minhagei Rosh Chodesh It is customary for women to refrain from performing certain types of work on Rosh Chodesh (see note). 52 It is customary to refrain from taking a haircut on Rosh Chodesh. 53 The Frierdiker Rebbe cites an ancient custom to study another possuk from the kapitel corresponding to one s age each Rosh Chodesh, along with Rashi s explanation (and additional commentaries). 54 For Tehillim with Rashi, visit www.chabad. org/16222. If there are less than twelve pesukim in your kapitel (or less than thirteen in a leap year), when you finish the kapitel, learn it a second time. If there are more than twelve (or thirteen) pesukim in your kapitel, study enough pesukim each Rosh Chodesh to finish the kapitel over the course of the year. 55 HOSAFOS SHEMINI ATZERES Mashiv Haruach U morid Hageshem If you are davening without a minyan, wait before davening Musaf until you are sure the minyan has already davened Musaf, so you can say morid hageshem. 56 If you did not yet daven Shacharis and you heard the gabbai announce Mashiv haruach u morid hageshem, say morid hageshem during Shacharis as well (unless you are davening Shacharis with a later minyan). 57 If you said Morid hatal instead of Mashiv haruach u morid hageshem, continue as usual and do not go back, even if you have not yet finished the berachah. 58 Tehillim SHABBOS MEVARCHIM CHODESH MARCHESHVAN It is not our custom to recite the pesukim printed before and after the Tehillim. 59

At the conclusion of Tehillim, an individual whose parents have passed recites Kaddish Yasom. If a chiyuv (an individual commemorating a yahrzeit or an avel) is present, Kaddish is recited at the end of each sefer. In such a case, the Yehi Ratzon following each sefer should be recited beforehand (at least by the one reciting Kaddish). 60 If you did not finish reciting Tehillim before davening, finish it as soon as possible (after Minchah, on Sunday, 61 or on the following Shabbos 62 ). Farbrengens Continue the Shabbos Mevarchim farbrengen at home during the Shabbos meal, by discussing with your family the general idea of Shabbos Mevarchim and the special dates of the upcoming month. 63 Women and girls should arrange their own farbrengens, either on Shabbos or on motzoei Shabbos. 64 ROSH CHODESH MARCHESHVAN Yaaleh Viyavo When Davening If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Maariv and remembered after saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah, do not go back to repeat it. 65 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Shacharis or Minchah and remembered after saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah, finish the berachah and say it before Modim. 66 If you already began saying Modim, go back to Retzei. 67 If you already said the second Yihiyu leratzon, go back to the beginning of Shemoneh Esrei. 68 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Shacharis and only remembered after davening Musaf, do not repeat the Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharis. 69 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Minchah and only remembered at night, daven the Maariv Shemoneh Esrei of Shabbos twice, once for Maariv and the second time to make up for Minchah. 70

All the above also applies if you are unsure whether you have said Yaaleh Viyavo. 71 Hallel If you are saying Hallel without a minyan, say the berachos at the beginning and end. 72 When saying the berachah at the end of Hallel, the word על is omitted. 73 Many are accustomed to saying these berachos even when saying Hallel with a minyan. 74 If doing so, say the berachos before or together with the chazzan, and do not answer amen on the chazzan s berachah. 75 Repeat the possuk of Hodu after each of the three pessukim of Yomar na (even when saying Hallel without a minyan 76 ). With regard to interrupting for devarim shebikdushah, Hallel shares the laws of birchos krias shema. 77 (To elaborate: With Kaddish, you may interrupt for Yehei Shmei Rabba and the amen of da amiran be alma. With Kedushah, you may interrupt for Kadosh, Boruch, and Yimloch. With Modim, you may say the words Modim anachnu lach. You may interrupt for Borchu and for the amen of Hakel hakadosh, Shomei a tefillah, and birchos hatorah. 78 ) Bentching The one leading the bentching raises his voice when saying the words ה אלקינו בו לטובה, ופקדנו בו לברכה, והושיענו בו לחיים טובים,זכרנו and those listening answer amen after each phrase. However, if they are in the middle of bentching as well, they may only answer if they are between berachos. 79 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo and remembered after saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah but before starting the berachah of Hatov vehameitiv, say the added paragraph for Rosh Chodesh printed in the bentcher or siddur. If you remembered after starting that berachah, do not go back to repeat Yaaleh Viyavo. 80
