NURSERY I & II MOROT ETTIE & TAMI Purim has brought fun and excitement to the Nursery classes. We listened to the entire Purim story and can identify all the Purim characters. We are in the midst of making our Purim megillos and have completed our leitzanim. Many new Purim songs have been taught to the children. We also enjoyed listening to several stories about Purim. The following words and phrases were taught as part of our Hebrew Language program: משלוח מנות מתנות לאביונים אזני המן רעשן איפה מלך אחשורוש? איפה אסתר המלכה? Parashas Pekudei is the last parsha in Sefer Shemos. In this parsha, Moshe tells Bnei Yisroel that their contributions will be used for the building of the Mishkan. The bigdei kehuna were sewn and everything for the Mishkan was now complete. NURSERY I & II- MOROT NECHAMA & SUSAN This week, we started a unit on Insects. The children finger painted insects, decorated ladybugs and created lacing cards of beetles. We listened to the stories The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Lonely Firefly both by Eric Carle, Quick As A Cricket by Audrey Wood and Effie by Beverly Allison. The children collected bugs in the playground and looked at them under a magnifying glass. They loved looking at many different insect books and pictures from our library. They looked at ladybugs, fireflies, ants, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers and bees. During dramatic play time, the children played with insect puppets. They learned the action song I m Bringing Home A Baby Bumblebee : I m bringing home a baby bumblebee Won t my mommy be so proud of me I m bringing home a baby bumblebee Oh-It stung me! The children created a new bulletin board on the theme of insects. The children will be adding pictures of all the new insects and their habitats to the board. Newsletter 3

PRE-KI, II & III- MOROT ETTIE & HEIDI For Parashas Pekudei, we reviewed the names of the kelim and the bigdei kehuna. We learned that Bnei Yisroel were very eager to contribute to the building of the Mishkan. However, when they attempted to assemble the Mishkan, they were unsuccessful. Only Moshe could put together all the sections of the Mishkan. We learned how the Shechina rested on the Mishkan when it was completed as a sign that Hashem was with the Jewish people. For Parashas Shekalim, we learned that Bnei Yisroel were counted according to the machatzis hashekel. In our milon, we reviewed all the letters from א through.צ We played alephbeis bingo, find the letter and a matching game. The Pre-K classes have been very busy getting ready for Purim. We listened to many stories about Purim and learned about the four mitzvos that we do on Purim; listening to the megillah, giving presents to the poor, sending Shalach Manos and eating a Purim Seudah. Using all sorts of manipulatives, the children built different types of castles. Each class also created a castle where the children play as they recreate the story of Purim. The children learned many new songs for Purim and continued practicing and enhancing their Hebrew vocabularies by learning the following words and phrases: אזני המן משלוח מנות רעשן מתנות לאביונים מלך מלכה איפה מלך אחשורוש? הנה מלך אחשורוש בארמון איפה אסתר המלכה? הנה אסתר המלכה בארמון PRE-KI- MORAH BERNEY We, in Pre-KI are very excited about our travels to different countries. This week, we began learning about China. We learned how to say different phrases so we would be prepared for our trip. Naturally, Hello, How are you, Please, Thank you and Goodbye were important phrases to learn. We talked about Chinese writing and reading and how the characters are written from top to bottom (very different from the way we read and write.) We were amazed to see what Chinese writing looks like. In art, we had fun making Chinese people, lanterns and fans. We even tried our own version of Origami (which is a way of folding paper into interesting designs.) In math, we tried learning how to count to 10 in Chinese. If you have any Chinese items at home that you can put in our museum for the week, we would be very grateful. Our trip to Chine is scheduled for next week. We will, of course, tell you all about it. As always, we were busy learning and having fun in Pre-K. The highlight was our trip to the Museum of Discovery and Science. Pre-KII & III MORAH JUDY This week, the Pre-KII & III children explored the Museum of Discovery and Science. They were able to use their imaginations as they operated simulated airplane take offs, orange picking and walking through a jungle. They were in awe of creatures that seemed life-like and of creepy crawling bugs. The trip was an adventure enjoyed by all. Our week was a week of Pre-K review. The children reviewed the letters Aa through Mm and the sounds that they make. They participated in pre-reading activities such as matching simple words to pictures. They were proud of their accomplishments as they began to recognize and sound out words. Pre-KII & III children also refreshed their counting and number recognition skills. They joined in our calendar counting games as well as sorting and pattern exercises. As a science exploration activity, the children joined in our water table outdoor play. They discovered how water flows through a funnel into a house and out to a bucket. They experimented with large water bottles, pouring into a funnel and discovered way water stays stagnant or flows quickly. There were many exciting discoveries made by the children at the water table. Newsletter 4

KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BAYLA & RENA Purim preparations are in high gear. The fascinating Megillah story continues to unfold. We worked on our megillos, made beautiful masks and listened to the story The Hamentaschen That Ran Away by Chaiky Helperin and Tell Me The Story of the Megillah by M. Klein. We discussed the mitzvos of Purim and of course, worked on our Purim presentations. We welcomed the letter mountain mem and mem sofis. We learned new Hebrew words and phrases such as: יש לי מסכה יש לי מגילה יש לי רעשן אני שולח משלוח מנות אני שומע את המגילה We discussed the concept of the sofis letters and how even though they look different than the regular letters, they have the same sound. We reviewed the ossiyos Alef-Mem and the nekudos patach, kamatz, tzereh, segol and chirik. Please send back the review sheets with your child. Remember, practice makes perfect! Parashas Pekudei tells us that the donations made by Bnei Yisroel were used in the building of the Mishkan. We learned how Betzalel followed Hashem s instructions for sewing the clothes of the kohanim. We also learned that when the Mishkan was completed, only Moshe Rabbeinu was able to set it up. As soon as this was done, Hashem s Shechina surrounded it. We were happy to hear that the completion of the Mishkan was proof that Hashem had forgiven the Bnei Yisroel for Chait Ha Egel. Chazak, Chazak V Nischazek! This week we are completing the reading of Sefer Shemos! For Parashas Shekalim, the children learned that Hashem told Moshe to have each person who was twenty years or older bring a silver coin worth half a shekel and then B nei Yisroel would be counted according to the number of coins. Every person brought the same amount whether they were rich or not. In Project Derech, we learned that it is a mitzvah to greet parents and grandparents when they arrive and to go with them to the door when they leave. KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BERNEY & MIRIAM What a nice week our kindergartners had-one filled with numerous novel activities. After we finished letterbook Rr, we welcomed the letter Nn to our classrooms. The children now know all of the short vowel sounds and most of the consonants. They understand that it is impossible to make a word without a vowel. To reinforce the letter Nn, we listened to the story Noisy Nora by Rosemary Wells in our listening center. We found it very interesting to examine different parts of a newspaper (comics, sports etc.) In math, the nickel was introduced and we practiced counting by fives to one hundred. We also practiced recognizing, writing and counting out sets of teen numbers. Newsflash! Our outdoor garden is beginning to grow. We can see our plants sprouting above the ground. We are amazed at our green thumbs. To round out our week, we read stories to the Morah and vice versa. We also continued writing in our journals using inventive spelling. Our hands on experiences at centers proved to be exciting and novel. Newsletter 5
