THE PARSHA EXPERIMENT PARSHAT EIKEV: APPRECIATING OUR CREATORS

Welcome To Sunday Night Bible Fellowship

name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation. Psa

Transcription:

Tonight s parsha gets it s name from the beginning of the portion in Deut 7:12 Deu 7:12 And it shall be, because עקב you hear(shema) את these right-rulings, and shall guard(shemar) and do them, that יהוה your Elohim shall guard with you the covenant and the kindness which He swore to your fathers, This is odd considering there are other words used in Hebrew for the word Because and Eikev is translated as End or Reward in other places, such as Psa 19:11; 40:15; 70:3; 119:33,112; Prov 22:4 Jewish commentator James Stone Goodman points to the usage of Eikev in Psalms 89:51 where it speaks of on the heels (Eikev) of the Messiah as referring to the last generation before the Messiah. That heel generation contains the weight of every generation prior to it every word said, every mitzvah (commandment) performed, contributes in some way to the coming of the Messiah. That generation is.יהוה therefore pointed to in Deut 7:12 as the generation who will shema to the instructions of Psa 89:48-52 What man would live and not see death? Who rescues his life from the power of the grave?,יהוה trustworthiness? where are Your former kindnesses, Which You swore to David in Your,יהוה Selah. remember the reproach of Your servants, That I have borne in my bosom Of all the many peoples, With which Your enemies have reproached, O,יהוה With which they have reproached the footsteps עקבות of Your anointed. Blessed be יהוה forever! Amen and Amen. 2Pet 3:11-12 Seeing all these are to be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be in set-apart behaviour and reverence, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of Elohim, through which the heavens shall be destroyed, being set on fire, and the elements melt with intense heat! It is also interesting to point out the appearance of a stand-alone aleph/tav (את) in this same verse: המ שפטים את ת שמעון עקב והיה Deut 7:12 The stand-alone aleph/tav appears in peculiar places throughout the Hebrew Scriptures and points to the Messiah who Himself declared that He was the Aleph and the Tav, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Considering this implication, this first part of Deut 7:12 would read. (את) Then it shall be because you listen to Yeshua The first generation failed to listen to the commandments, and the second generation listens and is lead by Joshua or in Hebrew Y hoshua, for short Yeshua (See Neh 8:17) So tonight s reading has within it the elements of listening to the Torah and following the living Torah Yeshua! John 15:8-10 In this My Father is esteemed, that you bear much fruit, and you shall be My taught ones. As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay in My love. If you guard My commands, you shall stay in My love, even as I have guarded My Father s commands and stay in His love.

The Parsha Deut 8:1-6 Guard to do every command which I command you today, that you might live, and shall increase, and go in, and shall possess the land of which יהוה swore to your fathers. And you shall remember that your Elohim led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, prove you, to know יהוה what is in your heart, whether you guard His commands or not. And He humbled you, and let you suffer hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, to make you know יהוה that man does not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of (Messiah quotes this in Matt 4:4 and in Luk 4:4). Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your יהוה foot swell these forty years. Thus you shall know in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so your Elohim disciplines you, therefore you shall guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim, to walk in His ways and to fear Him. Seems like this is FORTY years to the day that this is written based off verse 2, so now we know for a fact that this is written to the second generation, so this is a call to obey for the second generation. He s repeating his Covenantal obligations to enter into His Land, which is a shadow of New Jerusalem/Heaven. It is also fitting that we are going through this portion during Sukkot, if we listen to the Commandments we would dwell in Sukkah s (A flimsy structure) and He would provide every need. In fact the name Sukk-OT the OT makes the word Feminine plural This is fitting as Sukkot is a shadow of Yerushalayim Chadash (New Jerusalem) and we are the Masters Bride John 14:1-4 Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in Elohim, believe also in Me. In My Father s house are many rooms. And if not, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I shall come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you might be too. And where I go you know, and the way you know. Rev 21:2-3 And I, John, saw the set-apart city, renewed Yerushalayim, coming down out of the heaven from Elohim, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the heaven saying, See, the Booth of Elohim is with men, and He shall dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and Elohim Himself shall be with them and be their Elohim. Trust in the Sukkah Heb 13:5-6 Let your way of life be without the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For He Himself has said, I shall never leave you nor forsake you, so that we boldly say, יהוה is my helper, I shall not fear what man shall do to me. The Manna Did you catch the fact that He specifically did not give them the food they wanted? In v3 it reads And He humbled you, and let you suffer hunger, and fed you with manna The word used for Humbled is Anah the same word used in Lev 23 for Yom Kippur Humble yourself. Who is the living Manna? Yeshua John 6:31-36 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it has been written, He gave them bread out of the heaven to eat. Therefore auhsey said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Mosheh did not give you the bread out of the heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of the heaven. For the bread of

Elohim is He who comes down out of the heaven and gives life to the world. So they said to Him, Master, give us this bread always. And auhsey said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall not get hungry at all, and he who believes in Me shall not get thirsty at all. But I said to you that you have seen Me, and still do not believe. John 6:48-51 I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of the heaven, so that anyone might eat of it, and not die. I am the living bread which came down out of the heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever. And indeed, the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. What happened to Moses generation, they saw the manna but yet did not believe, just as it said in v3 in the parsha and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know to this day our fathers the patriarchs, the Jews do not know this manna, and it has temporarily humbled Israel for the greater good Rom 11:7-11 What follows is that Isra'el has not attained the goal for which she is striving. The ones chosen have obtained it, but the rest have been made stonelike, just as the Tanakh says, "Elohim has given them a spirit of dullness eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear, right down to the present day." And David says, "Let their dining table become for them a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a punishment. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can't see, with their backs bent continually." "In that case, I say, isn't it that they have stumbled with the result that they have permanently fallen away?" Heaven forbid! Quite the contrary, it is by means of their stumbling that the deliverance has come to the Gentiles, in order to provoke them to jealousy. So when the serpent tempts us we should follow Yeshua s example Mat 4:3-11 The Tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of Elohim, order these stones to become bread." But he answered, "The Tanakh says, 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of יהוה " Then the Adversary took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the Temple. "If you are the Son of Elohim," he said, "jump! For the Tanakh says, 'He will order his angels to be responsible for you.... They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.' " Yeshua replied to him, "But it also says, 'Do not put יהוה your Elohim to the test.' " Once more, the Adversary took him up to the summit of a very high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their glory, and said to him, "All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me." "Away with you, Satan!" Yeshua told him, "For the Tanakh says, 'Worship יהוה your Elohim, and serve only him.' " Then the Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him. Yeshua refutes the serpent and the offer of his Kingdom because He knows that His fathers Kingdom (Sukkah) is greater than the serpents. Back to the Parsha Deut 8:7-10 For יהוה your Elohim is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey, a land in which you eat bread without scarcity, in which you do not lack at all, a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you dig copper. And you shall eat and be satisfied, and shall bless יהוה your Elohim for the good land which He has given you.

It is a land which is full of blessing beyond what we could ever need. This also is the case only when Israel is in the land. Throughout history the land became desolate without the people it was intended for. In fact if you look at creation, it was void until the spirit fills it Gen 1:2 And the earth came to be formless and empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of Elohim was moving on the face of the waters. Josephs Dry Bones Gen 50:25 & Exo 13:19 Dry Bones of Israel and Judah Ezek 37:1-14 both examples return to the Land All the items mentioned above are used in the Temple service (No figs, no honey Lev 2:11, but honey represents Torah Psa 19:9-10, 119:103) Olive oil represents the spirit (See Zech 4 & Mat 25) and Honey represents the Torah then v8 would read a land of olive oil (SPIRIT) and honey (TRUTH) John 4:23-25 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him. Elohim is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming (Eikev), the One who is called Anointed. When that One comes, He shall announce to us all. A land who s stones are full of Iron and Copper These metals are used to refer to Israel s return to the land Ezek 22:17-21 And the word of יהוה came to me, saying, Son of man, the house of Iisrael has become dross to Me. All of them are copper, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of a furnace they have become the dross of silver. Therefore thus said the Master,יהוה Because all of you have become dross, therefore see, I am gathering you into the midst of Yerushalayim. As they gather silver, and copper, and iron, and lead, and tin into the midst of a furnace, to blow fire on it, to melt it, so I gather you in My displeasure and in My wrath. And I shall blow and melt you. And I shall gather you and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you shall be melted in its midst. Deut 4:20 No, you יהוה has taken and brought out of the smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of inheritance for him, as you are today. Also this could be prophetic of the Empires that came to power in the land (Bronze is made of copper also nearly identical words in Hebrew) Dan 2:32 This image s head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, Greece 331-168 B.C Leader:Alexander the great, Four Horns (Kings/Generals) Antiochus Destroyed Temple {Dan 2:32 Middle and thighs of Bronze/Copper} {Dan 7:6 Third Beast ~ Leopard} Dan 2:40 The fourth kingdom will be as strong as iron. Iron can break anything into pieces, pulverize it and crush it. So just as iron can crush anything, this kingdom will break the other kingdoms into pieces and crush them.

Roman empire 168 B.C - 476/1453 A.D Leader:Ceaser, Ten Horns (Kings/Generals) Titus Destroyed Temple {Dan 2:32 Legs of Iron} {Dan 7:7 & 7:19-23 The fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It has iron teeth, and claws of bronze} Both of these empires destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem, but what destroys these empires or beasts??? Dan 2:35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken into pieces which became like the chaff on a threshing-floor in summer; the wind blew them away without leaving a trace. But the stone which had struck the statue grew into a huge mountain that filled the whole earth. Dan 2:45 like the stone you saw, which, without human hands, separated itself from the mountain and broke to pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold. The great Elohim has revealed to the king what will come about in the future. The dream is true, and its interpretation is reliable." The Parsha Deut 8:11-17 Be on guard, lest you forget יהוה your Elohim by not guarding His commands, and His rightrulings, and His laws which I command you today, lest you eat and shall be satisfied, and build lovely houses and shall dwell in them, and your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and your gold are יהוה increased, and all that you have is increased, that your heart then becomes lifted up, and you forget your Elohim who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, from the house of bondage, who led you through that great and awesome wilderness fiery serpents and scorpions and thirst where there was no water, who brought water for you out of the flinty rock, who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and to try you, to do you good in the end (End reward!?), you then shall say in your heart, My power and the strength of my hand have made for me this wealth! The etymology of forget (shakach - ( שכח means to forget due to distraction or inattention. In Devarim 8, we read that the things that distract us are our full stomachs, our beautiful homes, our jobs and our money. According to the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament, forgetting is not simply a psychological act of having a thought pass from one s consciousness, i.e. a temporary or permanent lapse of memory. This is indicated by the frequent identification of the verb with an action: To forget יהוה Elohim, is to not keep His commandments Deut 8:11" Beware that you do not forget יהוה your Elohim by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, To forget יהוה Elohim, is to follow other gods Deut 8:19 "Then it shall be, if you by any means forget יהוה your Elohim, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them To forget יהוה is to live in fear of harm and danger, to live fretfully and timidly Isa 51:13 And you forget יהוה your Maker, Who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth; You have feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, When he has prepared to destroy. And where is the fury of the oppressor? To forget יהוה is to live in rebellion:

Psa 106:13-15 They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested Elohim in the desert. And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul They forgot Elohim their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt, Forgetting is often associated specifically with turning away from Torah: Prov 3:1 My son, do not forget My Torah, But let your heart keep my commands; Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the Torah of your Elohim, I also will forget your children. Let s finish the Parsha Deu 8:18-20 But you shall remember יהוה your Elohim, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, in order to establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is today. And it shall be, if you by any means forget יהוה your Elohim, and follow other mighty ones, and serve them and bow yourself to them, I have warned you this day that you shall certainly perish. Like the nations which יהוה is destroying before you, so you are to perish, because you did not obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim. This is what He is doing today, restoring us to the Torah that we forgot so we can be restored to the land that he never forgot Mal 4:4-6 Remember the Torah of Mosheh, My servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel laws and right-rulings. See, I am sending you Eliyah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of.יהוה And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with utter destruction. Num 15:39 It is to be a tzitzit for you to look at and thereby remember all of יהוה mitzvot and obey them, so that you won't go around wherever your own heart and eyes lead you to prostitute yourselves; Num 15:40 but it will help you remember and obey all my mitzvot and be holy for your Elohim. Deut 8:2 You are to remember everything of the way in which יהוה led you these forty years in the desert, humbling and testing you in order to know what was in your heart - whether you would obey his mitzvot or not.
