Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) April 22, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Notitas del Diácono How to Celebrate the Easter Season The Sunday Readings during the Easter season helps us to better understand the new life Jesus promises us. At the same time, in the gospels on the first three Sundays we see the joy of the apostles when they encounter Christ. On the second Sunday of Easter we also see Thomas experience of the Risen Lord. On the fourth Sunday of Easter we see the story of the Good Shepherd. On the last three Sundays of Easter, passages of the Last Supper from John s Gospel, calls us to greater unity and love in Christ. During the Easter season, the first reading always comes from the Acts of the Apostles. Any other time of the year the first reading normally comes from the Old Testament. This allows us to see the deep faith of the early Church in Jerusalem. As a result, our faith will be inspired, just like the early disciples of the early Church in Jerusalem. Through our baptism, Jesus shares His life with us. We then cooperate with the grace given to us throughout our lives. We also deepen our relationship with the Lord. St. Paul states in Gal. 2:20: It is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me. The Easter season is time we remember and celebrate our baptismal Sunday Mass, the renewal of the baptismal promises may replace the penitential rite. The priest will sprinkle us with water. This is a concrete way of reminding us of our baptismal promises we made to the Lord. This can also strengthen us in our relationship with Christ. The Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation are commonly celebrated during the Easter Season. Prayerfully, families and parishes join together in these sacraments. This is another way to grow in Jesus Christ.

Yet it s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world s crops and livestock. This week s scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday s reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John s letter we hear that we have become God s beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God s beloved flock? English has a much newer name, the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain the spring equinox was dedicated to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun King s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It was believed that Eoster once came across a bird with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a rabbit an egg -laying rabbit at that! Although they were baptized, most people didn t take to the new Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name for Christmas, too: Yule. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SILENCE Silence is a gift of God, to let us speak more intimately with God. On earth, it is the greatest gift you can give them. Call the office for more information. In today s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, talks about the good deed of healing that he and the disciples had done for a cripple. He tells the leaders of the Jews that all good deeds are done in the name of Jesus Christ. We, as disciples in today s world, are all asked by God to do acts of love for others in the name of Jesus. How well are we performing? It is time to raise the bar? The way we determine our calling as disciples is through daily prayer and the frequent reception of the Eucharist. During prayer, we recognize that God has a plan for each of us; and it will be revealed to us in time. Let us never forget that, as Peter was, the Holy Spirit will be with us as we discern our service to others. In today s Gospel, Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Have we ever considered ourselves as shepherds to those in need? Whether we realize it or not, each of us is, regardless of our situation in life, can be a shepherd to others who need tending. At a minimum, we can pray for those in need. A simple phone call of encouragement is also a good way to share our time. Certainly, there are many other ways that we can help: home visits; Holy Communion to the homebound; taking dinner to those recovering from surgery at home; and the list goes on. The key factor here is that shepherding others is not an option. It is a commandment of love. Just as shepherding others is not an option from God, so is helping others financially not an option. But it is not the amount we give that is important. Our gift should be based on the needs of others, accompanied by our own common sense. The same is true when it comes to supporting our family parish, St. Joan of Arc. It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis. Are you looking for a way to increase and deepen your relationship with Jesus through our Blessed Mother while finding FELLOWSHIP within the parish? We are looking for leaders who are willing to retreat with us during the summer with the process called: 33 Days to Morning Glory. The process will begin for these leaders on Tuesday, June 5th and will continue until Sunday, July 15th at the 11:00 a.m. Mass where you will consecrate your lives to Jesus through Mary.
