Page 2 READINGS FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 2019 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18 Second Reading: Philippians 3:17 4:1 or 3:20 4:1 Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36 FOCUS: Jesus is beloved Son and fulfillment of God s promises. At this early point in our Lenten journey, our readings remind us of God s promises to humanity and his faithfulness to those promises. Full of the same hope that once spurred Abraham on to leave his homeland and Paul to preach the Gospel with commitment and fidelity, they now seek to encourage us in our Lenten disciplines. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The promises made to Abraham go beyond his wildest dreams he will be the father of a great nation, as numerous as the stars in the night sky. Saint Paul challenges the Philippians to imitate him and to stand firm and faithful in the Lord. The glory of the Transfiguration gives us a glimpse of the glory of the risen Christ. Page 3 LENTEN SCHEDULE The penitential Season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. Lent has six Sundays; the sixth of which is called Passion or Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics (14 years and older) on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting means limiting oneself to one full meal on a given fast day. Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On fast days, two additional smaller meals are permitted. However, the two smaller meals together should not equal one full meal. The schedule of services for Lent is as follows: Daily Mass Monday through Friday at 9:00 AM ~ Church Stations of the Cross After the 9:00 a.m. Mass ~ Church Friday, March 8 Friday, March 15 Friday, March 22 Thursday, March 28 Thursday, April 4 Thursday, April 11 Confessions Saturdays of Lent: 3:45-4:45 p.m. ~ Hall Monday, April 15 - Diocesan Day of Penance: 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. ~ Church
