Service for the Lord s Day First Presbyterian Church Ada, Oklahoma May 20 th, 2018 Day of Pentecost 10:45 AM We Gather Welcome and Announcements Passing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us now share in a time of passing the peace. Teresa White Lighting of the Christ Candles, and Prelude Morning Prayer Tchaikovsky Bonita Blackburn, Organist Prayer of the Day *Greeting, Responsive The Lord be with you. And also with you. *Call to Worship, Responsive John 20:17,22 On Easter morning it was so natural, and so expected, that Mary would want to hold onto Jesus. But he had been saying, he is returning to the Father, and the Father and the Son will send the Holy Spirit, and so the disciples will not be left orphaned or alone. Jesus will have to return to the Father. The incarnation will end. But the presence of God doesn t stop, only advances. Mary will have to let go of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will be given. The Lord is with us, for the Spirit is given! The Spirit is given, indeed! Come, let us worship. 1
*Hymn 279 Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove *Prayer of Confession, Unison Book of Common Worship Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. But we confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. Remember your mercy, and hear our confession. (continue in a time of personal confession) *Assurance of Pardon Book of Common Worship Friends, hear the good news: Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, forgives. Now, may God transform us and make us passionate to do the will of Christ our Lord. Thanks be to God! Amen. *Affirmation of Faith Apostles Creed Hymnal, front page 35 Worship with Music Hallelujah, Praise Ye the Lord Amen, Praise the Lord Amazing Grace Children s Choir Melissa Shaw We Hear the Word Bible Reading John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 [NT page 110] it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak 2
whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. Song Schafe Konnen Sicher Weiden J.S.
