page 2 Dear Co-Cathedral Parishioners: Welcome to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist A WITNESS OF BELONGING This weekend marks a very distinctive celebration for our parish church, which was established in 1863, on this very block. During the early days, Doctor William Worrall Mayo used to invite the Pastor of our parish to accompany him on some sick calls in a horse and buggy. As you know, the Mayo s were not Catholic, but the founder created a friendly relationship with the Pastor and that dynamic has grown over the years and I am grateful for our partnership with Mayo as we welcome all who find their way to our door. Just last week, I met three people of the Hindu tradition and they work across the street with a desire to come to our Church every day to pray. I am so grateful they feel welcome and we must continue to work seriously to keep our doors open and available to all people. Our parishioners, the parish staff and I, as rector, hope that your visit to our church will be a prayerful time while at the Mayo Clinic or while you are visiting our city for any other reason. We encourage you to consider the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist as your church away from home. If we may serve you with any of your needs please do not hesitate to contact us at the Parish Center. Also, please know that the Mayo Clinic offers a chaplaincy service while you are in the hospital and it is possible for communion to be brought to you every day by you talking to the hospital staff and placing a card outside of your door. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is available by request. The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Community is committed to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ as we partner with the city and our neighbor, the Mayo Clinic. If you have recently moved to our city and desire to join the parish community, please find a form on our web page or stop by the Parish Center and register as a member. Together we pray that the Holy Spirit will lead us in being a welcoming Catholic community. Fr. Jerry Mahon Rector The Diocese of Winona was erected in 1889, before that we were a part of the Archdiocese of St. Paul. There was not a Cathedral built in the beginning and actually it did not happen until the early 1950 s. Prior to the creation of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, we had a Pro-Cathedral in Winona, waiting for the day when a Cathedral could be built. At this moment in history, the Cathedral remains in Winona, but the name of the Diocese is changed to the Diocese of Winona-Rochester and this weekend our Church is being Elevated to the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The Nuncio, the Representative of Pope Francis in the USA, Archbishop Pierre, will be with us for the celebration along with several bishops, clergy, religious and an abundance of lay people from across southern Minnesota. These folks will be representing every parish community as well as other significant religious institutions. The Second Vatican Council taught that one of the names of the Church of God is the holy temple which, symbolized in places of worship built out of stone, is praised by the Holy Fathers and, not without reason, is compared in the liturgy to the Holy City, the New Jerusalem. The distinctive nature of the cathedral is described in the Ceremonial of Bishops, which explains that it is both site and sign: the site of the bishop s cathedra or chair, the sign of his teaching office and pastoral power in the particular Church, and a sign also of the unity of believers in the faith that the bishop proclaims as shepherd of the Lord s flock. This could sound heavy, but it is meant to focus our minds and hearts on the fact that our Church is becoming a part of a significant tradition that calls us together in following the Church as a Life which unites and calls us to follow the teaching authority of the Bishop, the one who teaches and leads as Shepherd in the Apostolic Tradition of the Apostles, belong to Jesus Christ. The document goes on to speak of the qualification for a Church being elevated: The Church s essential concern, then, is not for a particular style or period, but rather that all things set apart for use in divine worship should be truly worthy, becoming, and beautiful, signs and symbols of the supernatural world and so able to turn the human spirit devoutly toward God. Bishop John M. Quinn, the Bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester made this request to Rome a couple of years ago and the first step was to seek permission to begin a study. We sent numerous documents to the Vatican as they clearly wanted to know everything about our structure, the liturgical suitability and the community that gathers. In light of our city growing and becoming more of a center for Catholic life, we were granted this step and a decree was sent from Pope Francis that changes our beautiful church to a Co-Cathedral We welcome all who join us as we Rejoice in hope we gratitude for the Church s One Foundation.
