But the truth is that today s scene is but one moment from the Spirit s long presence in salvation. The spirit of God (ruach) is present at the dawn of creation, blowing over the chaotic waters as God commands light to be. That same spirit of God filled the prophets of Israel. The spirit of the Lord came upon me fills their witness, as they guided Israel in their quest to be faithful to the loving, merciful God of their covenant. We hear that the Spirit overshadowed Mary s womb so that the very Word of God would take on our human flesh. And Jesus begins his ministry in Luke s Gospel by saying the Spirit is upon him. On the cross, according to John, he gives up his spirit. Today Paul tells us that this Holy Spirit is from God, who raised Christ from the dead. We also hear John s account of the Spirit as the very breath of the risen Christ on his disciples. That same Spirit of all these biblical accounts was there at our baptism and continues to live in us. We are temples of that Spirit, witnesses to the Spirit s grace. And it is in the Holy Spirit that we will continue to live in the gospel s light, and to pursue our life of eternal glory in Christ. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
